Looking to replace my SV1000N with another twin but less maint belt drive.....keeping my other chain bike (CBR1100Xx).

Found a clean '06 at a dealer with 8900mi for $5290 with side hardbags. Seeing good reviews on this bike. Any issues to be aware of? I know the fan sounds like a vacuum and it's a tall bike but I hope it doesn't throw heat like the X11 (or something) Buell's I demo'd awhile back.

This seems like a good price....not the only one I'm looking at but aren't too many around.
Also does the belt drive need much maintenance? I'm not taking the bike offroad....mainly just commuting.

As for the belt maintenance - None. There isn't even a replacement interval. Ride the piss out of it and enjoy.

Thanks for the link. Seems like many things affect the '06. I found a couple '08s with about 10K miles but in 7500 range. Wonder if it's worth buying a a later model?

The 08's had significant changes over previous years, including everything on the lower half of the motor being changed. If you can get your hands on an 08+ at a great price, go for it. The 06 isn't a bad bike either, and many of the later year upgrades can be retrofitted.

Talk (over the phone)is cheap.
Make the drive in with a trailer (or accomplice) and lay 9 "large" on the table. Then you'll know how flexible they are...

The comment about calling them on the phone is 100% correct. Dealers get a dozen calls a day from people who say, " I will be in tomorrow to buy....." then never show up. Dealers are also reluctant to offer a good deal over the phone because it may be another dealer fishing for info. Go in and be clear they you are serious about buying that particular bike. Remember at HD dealers it is now the 2011 model year. That bike is two years old, wether it has been titled or not. The second you sign the papers it's retail value becomes $7525.00, The blue book on a 2009 Uly. If they won't take 9K for a bike they have been sitting on for over a year and a half they don't want to sell it for some reason.

Better fueling, more reliable engine with stronger components, better cooling system, improved steering left to right angle, better tires, improved headlamps, heated grips, stronger clutch cable retainer, handlebar mounted clutch holder to not obstruct the instrument cluster, better seat, better latches on bags, ECM controlled power outlet, stronger belt, better but still crap wheel bearings, grippy footpegs, seat heat deflectors, comfort kit, nicer controls, teflon coated clutch cable, nicer looking frame and motor.

I was going to suggest a couple ideas on buying new when I realized I have only bought one new bike in my life and I have never had any major issues with a motorcycle I purchased. I would just avoid any bike that has had a lot of "mods" the people I have known who have had problems are always the same people who are always "tweeking" something.

Doesn't that depend on if you mean used pre 08 or used post 08? I got a good deal on a used, low mile, 08 X. I only looked for 08+ 12X bikes because of your list.

Bingo. I got a rule with used vehicles, if the mod can't be removed and put back to stock in 5 minutes, it loses a point. After so many points, I look elsewhere.

Pretty much. I interpreted Johns post as lightly used 06 vs something like a brand new 09. There aren't many cheap 08+ bikes out there.

The 2008+ engine might be better (improved) but it sure isnīt nicer looking ! I find the earlier engine much more appealing to the eye.
Not that it matters. Just my opinion, and yes, i have a 06 Uly and it kicks serious butt!

To answer the original question, the biggest problem with '06 Ulys seem to be wiring issues. The good news is that once it is fixed it stays fixed. Mine has had many wiring problems that want to lead to other things, but the other things are avoidable with the preemptive wiring repairs.

We have found and fixed most everything here on BadWeB that can stop it from running, so with a little wrenching ability and some patience, there are very few things cannot be overcome by a home mechanic.

When I made the decision to purchase a ULY I checked the specs for each model year and came here where I found a wealth of information about the issues related to models and years.

My choice came down to a few things. I had ridden an 06 and did not like the limited turning radius. The extra 20° trees on the 08+ X was a major thing to me. I already decided to install H&B Xplorer Aluminum cases so I did not want the stock XT bags or racks. I did want the Outdoorsman racks. It also seemed, from what I read here, that the 08+ had solved several issues mentioned on earlier models. The main issue appeared to be the rear wheel bearings and I was lucky to find one with the 2010 rear wheel already installed.

Bottom line is.... do some research, decide what is important to you, decide what you want to change or maintain, and look for exactly what you want. Nothing is worse than getting not quite what you want then second guessing or regretting that you didn't spend a few more dollars or look a bit longer. And when exactly what you wanted shows up on ebay or Craig's list but you already settled for something else you will be kicking yourself.

I've never let the sport bike style turning radius bother me. I can still do u-turns within the 20 X 60 MSF box without a problem. Would I like to have the extra 20 degrees ... yes, but I'm not willing to pay for it ... yet.

I can too. I developed that ability on my old (sigh) ST3. But I don't like using that much lean angle when demoing for students in an ERC...oops, BRC 2. It's also nicer for the stop and avoid in an ACR. And with a couple too many bikes in the garage I like the ability to maneuver it around and park.

I wouldn't say I paid for it. I made it a goal, was patient, and looked for it. I found what I wanted at a great price. It was 800 miles away but the seller was a great guy who met me part way so I enjoyed a 500 mile ride home. That ride showed me the Uly was as great as everyone said and it has been my only ride ever since. Now I have an 08 Road Glide collecting Dust.

Yes...but Froggy hates everything aircooled these days so don't worry about what he thinks!

The biggest problem I have with my 06 is tires. I keep using the damned things up because I hate parking the bike! The only non-farkle items I've done are replacing the 77 connector with screw terminal splices, and putting 07 progressive fork springs in the front end. Oh, and the Erik Buell Racing ECM, which I HIGHLY recommend! I'm getting ready to put on a 6mm front rotor, too - going from the Uly, which I'm just "used to", to the CR with 1700 miles on it and a rotor to match...wow. I need to get the Uly to stop like that!

Oh, and Froggy...if you want to get rid of that belt, let me know. Been thinking about it, I shoulda grabbed it from you at Vern's : )

Ratbuell - The biggest problem I have with my 06 is tires.

Same here - just put a Shinko Raven on the back this morning, that's the fourth back tire in a year of ownership. The Diablo Strada was totally shot after 2700 miles and that's the worst so far. Got 4500 from a Roadsmart and 3500 from the original Dunlop 616. Hope the Shinko lasts a bit longer. On the plus side, gas mileage is great, averaging about 49mpg - not too shabby at all.
