A few weeks ago I was with a friend and fellow Bueller in the Ozark mountains when he wrecked his CR. The accident was relatively minor but being miles away from civilization with no cell service and minimal traffic driving by got me to thinking.. if it had been a more severe accident we both would have been better off with more preparation. So.. fire extinguisher and first aid kit. I'll have to wait about another week for the first aid kit to come in, but I got the extinguisher mounted tonight. The first aid kit is a HART 10 unit box. It's a metal case with some weatherproof strips inside the lid (much like the design of the journey bags) that should do a good job of keeping the contents isolated from the elements. I plan on mounting the first aid kit to the lid of the top case. Despite what some of these pictures look like, there is ample clearance between the bottle and the swingarm as well as the handle and the rear tire. I picked up some 24ga brass wire to use as "sheer wire". It has a 2 lb test strength so can be used to secure the pin to the handle as shown here, but will easily break away so the pin can be pulled quickly in an emergency. I also sheer wired the clamp tight around the bottle. It clamps tight enough that I don't think this was necessary, but just in case.. I'd hate to see what kind of damage a fire extinguisher can do bouncing down the highway at 70 mph! I'm also going to get some type of plug to keep debris out of the nozzle. I'm thinking a plastic ESD cap from work will do the trick. |

There's room on the other side for an axe, ladder and shovel. |

Check your set up alot, I have seen brackets like that let the fire extinguisher go. Cheap insurance and if it does come out and go bouncing down the highway you will see the cloud of dust in your mirror. |
