So do I have a bad speedometer, ground connection or ECM? Under hard acceleration and over 70mph, when the bike is cold, the speedometer bounces between 70 and 100 mph, when I let off the gas it shows a constant speed, below 70mph it shows a constant speed and when the bike is hot it shows a constant speed. Some of the other electronics like the dashboard lights and a PIAA driving light diode indicator are also flaky, the PIAA lights work solid only the on/off indicator has issues. Any ideas on how to best debug this, I will tear into the dash this weekend to look at the wiring but is there anywhere I should check? Thanks |

I should also add that I had a similar issue back in March when the bike was under warranty and the dealership replaced the ECM. What are the odds of another bad ECM? Is there anything I can do to check that without ECMspy? (Message edited by ryat79 on October 05, 2010) |

I would check the ground wires on the steering head behind the headlights first. Then do a wiggle test on the wires at the ECM and as much as you can throughout the harness. Then un wrap the wires where they pass from under the fuel tank up to the steering head clamp. There is a red power lead wire that has a crimped triple lead out splice that has a tendency to break in there causing power failures to and from the electrical items forward of the fork tubes. |

I would start with the ground wires on the frame on the front of the bike, behind the headlights. There are four wires there and they all share the same screw. They may not look broken but they can be. |
