Posted recently a thread here, trying to find a used ECM, replacing the one in my 06 Uly, that has a cracked housing and was causing trouble. A dear friend of mine found me the ECM out of an 2004 12R for free. Will it be compatible with my bike? Can it be upgraded/reflashed with the new software? Who does that? Erik Buell Racing? Your friendly local HD dealer that is going to bend me over and stick it to me ? Should I just swallow the bitter $250 pill for a new Erik Buell Racing race ECM? |

Hunn, I suggest that you bite the bullet and spend $250 rather than try to get an earlier ECM programmed by a dealer. You might have a bit of luck with ECM Spy but you WILL have success and be very happy with a new Erik Buell Racing ECM. I'll say it again and there are many others who will echo my words, it's the best $250 I've spent on my bike. You are virtually guaranteed to be happy because you will experience performance you never dreamed of with the stock ECM even if your bike seemed to run fine. The difference is unbelievable. You won't regret it. My 08XT is a totally different bike with the Erik Buell Racing ECM having never run this smoothly. And I do mean NEVER. My bike would die after start-up as many as 4 times before it would idle. At takeoff it would cough and spit and nearly die. Deceleration was met with popping at any speed. The bike would surge and buck at low speeds too. All of this has disappeared and the bike accelerates smoothly in every gear. This is why I spent the $ rather than have a dealer continue trying different fuel maps until they by chance found one that worked. Just pull the trigger and don't look back. Oh one other thing, read the thread on the Erik Buell Racing ECM and see what folks are saying about it. Keep us posted. |

Email Erik Buell Racing. Give them: 1. Your bike information (year, model, mods) 2. Your donor ECM info (part number, original application) Ask them if they can flash it to work with your bike. You may be pleasantly surprised. K.I.S.S., and don't overwhelm them with information right off the bat. Include a letter with the part when you ship it if it comes to it, but simple emails - in my experience - get quicker responses. |

I don't know if this is common but my dealer wants almost $200 to update/flash the ECM. That's why I bought the comfort kit but haven't updated the ECM yet. If this is true for all dealers then you would be better off going to Erik Buell Racing for whichever solution you decide on. |

If you bought the comfort kit, the flash is *supposed* to be included in the kit price. My dealer here does flashes for free; many others charge half an hour labor, and no parts. $200 is a joke. Find another dealer. |

Ratbuell Posted on Monday, August 16, 2010 $200 is a joke. Find another dealer. Not a joke; their way of saying "we don't want to work on it"; but if we do it's going to leave a mark. |

Yeah well I got the kit from St Paul HD, about 1300 miles away. Don't think I'm going there for the flash. Two other dealers in the state, maybe I'll see what they have to say. |

The flash is not included in the kit price anyway... |

That's because the flash isn't a "part"...it's just labor time. There is no billable "item". For my money (no pun intended)...I'd spend where it's appreciated. I did just that, actually. Email Erik Buell Racing, tell 'em what you have, how your bike is set up, and get one of the best maps you've ever had the pleasure of riding with. I'm not the only one who's running an Erik Buell Racing flash in a totally stock bike (mine's an '06 so no comfort flash for the fan...but still a rockin' map!), and completely LOVING IT. Worth every penny...and it supports THE core group. Erik gave us the bikes. Spend a little money with him, help the guys race some more. |

Can Erik Buell Racing flash our stock ECM to something that works a little better or am I way off? I would gladly send mine to them if they could do that but maybe I am just dreaming. Thanks. |

Motorbike- Erik Buell Racing will not re-flash our stock ECMs, only sell new ones. I asked why they didn't want a stock ECM back to re-flash and here's their reply: We do not do that, as we want to leave the customer with a street legal ECM so they can still ride legally on the street should they choose to do so. So all of our ECM's are separate pieces, traceable as being created from day 1 for race use." I love the part about for race use. |

I just bought one. I called Erik Buell Racing with a question about my billing as I typed in something wrong. Took me by surprise when Erik answered the phone. |

Well? Did you ask Erik the BIG question Ourdee? Like "Dude, will you make sure we can keep these beauties up and running for the next many years?" Hmmmm? |

I tried not to bother him. I do the R.D. stuff and let him do the Erik stuff. |

Ulykan Posted on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 We do not do that, as we want to leave the customer with a street legal ECM so they can still ride legally on the street should they choose to do so. Which is why I never sell the original "legal" parts, that get swapped for "performance" or "aesthetics." When the bike gets sold, all the originals go with it as a deal sweetener. |

Ulykan, thank you for the reply, that is exactly what I was looking for, even though it is not what I wanted to hear. I hope Erik Buell Racing still has the ECM's available by the time I can scrape together $250 without my wife (bookkeeper) finding out. Teeps, from what I have been hearing about the Erik Buell Racing Race ECM, I think it would be to your benefit to leave it on if trying to sell one of these bikes. Who would ever know what ECM it is if you just wipe off the "For Race Use Only" on top of the ECM? Thanks. |

I figured it was just a matter of time before I got one. I hate using credit cards and usually carry a zero balance. My thought was Erik Buell Racing could probably use the money sooner than later. So I pulled out the card. I've got a few weeks to scrape up the money to pay it. If you are planning on getting one, get it now before the racing season is over. Come on, take out a payday loan. Well, maybe not go that far. But it is for the team. |

It just arrived at my back door 10 minutes ago. I put it in and rode around the block. 1800 rpm and it was another bike. SMOOOOOOTH. I have to get some sleep and be at work at 2:00 tonight. It is programmed for Best Drive Calibration for a stock muffler and the '09 fan strategy. I can't wait for the ride to work. |

Hard to believe there's that much of a difference but there is. I was skeptical before buying mine but no more skepticism here. |

My sentiments as well. I can now use 5th gear at speeds below 80 now. My stock setup didn't want to be below 4K RPM,now she pulls cleanly from 2K. It's a whole new bike! |

When running with Erik Buell Racing ECM, do you notice the speedometer is off? Mine is about 2 to 3 Mph faster compared to what Garmin shows. This is similar to when the stock ECM is reflashed with the RSS update! |

Bluex, I have the Erik Buell Racing ECM but haven't used my Garmin with it yet to see if the speedometer is accurate now. Prior to the new ECM I noticed that there was about a 3 mph fast error compared to the Garmin. Right now I'm not able to ride as I have a hole in my belt and am awaiting a new one from American Sport Bike. Once I get the new belt on I'll plug in the gps and check the speedometer against it then post the result unless someone else does it first. |

Froggy: There are three settings: * Airbox pressure correction for speed (table) * Scale factor for VSS input * Scale factor for VSS output Which one should I use? Thanks. |
