Just got back from Sturgis last night at 9 pm. 1355 miles total over 4 days. About 600 straight to get there on Wednesday, apparently only 155 or so miles while we were there, and about 600 on Saturday to get back to Nebraska. Never missed a beat and got a high of 50.3 mpg on one tank in the Black Hills and that is with a big windshield. Tuesday afternoon while packing for the trip, my noticed the rear tire looked low. It was flat with a nail dead center on the tire. I pulled the nail and plugged it and pumped it back to about 40psi. Fortunately for me it held just fine for the trip and that plug was in the slab riding part the entire time and with me weighing over 200 and a fully loaded bike. Bike now has over 28,000 miles. Original fan, and no wheel bearing failures. It has been a real reliable bike for me. Very nice trip. More bikes than I've seen at Sturgis in years. |

Nice! Sounds like our 2-up trip around Lake Michigan, headed to and from Homecoming from Maryland. Overloaded, major miles...and never missed a beat. Other than the stupid owner not being able to properly read how much life was left in the rear tire, anyway.... |

My trip out to Oregon in June, I misjudged the life of my rear tire also, cords started showing in Jackson Hole. Only tire in town was a Shinko Raven. 500 miles back home, a new set of Pirelli Angels sitting in the garage. I have 26K on the Uly with no problems. I carry a spare belt, wheel bearings, tire plugs and compresser. They have just gone along for the ride. We plugged the rear tire on my Daughters Triumph, 3K and it needs replacement now. If you ever get up to the Black Hills give me a call. I have garage, spare bedroom, truck and beer. |

Electraglider Sorry this is off subject. But what tool do you use to remove the rear wheel bearing seals so you can check & repack?? |

This is the flat dental pick use:
Worked fine on these steering bearings and the red NTN wheel bearings. Couldn't get it under the black KBC seals though and I didn't want to tear up new seals. |

Ya, I carry: (in operators tubes) 1 liter of fuel (RH side), and a first aid kit (LH side) (under seat) a loose spare clutch cable, and a tire plug kit and compressor in the underseat bag (L saddlebag) Buell toolkit, the big $99 one (R saddlebag) 1 qt spare Syn3. Dead weight on mine too. Haven't had to use a bit of it yet...which I'm fine with My rear tire... I looked at it before we left Maryland, thinking "we'll make it to ET on that, and just get a new one at Hal's or something". I'm used to riding solo. And relatively empty. 2-up, slabbing it in 95+ weather and loaded beyond GVWR...it was tossing chunks that night by the time we hit Toledo. Whoops, heheh... |

I replaced the belt and the rear tire last week and the thin screwdriver I had planned to use to pop out the bearing seal was a bit thick so I flattened the tip of a small nail, worked fine. Bearings were in good shape, no sign of water penetration after 8K, but I dug out some of the blue grease and added Lucas Red 'n' Tacky as favored by Xbimmer |

Buellhusker, I just use a tiny screwdriver and pry them out. Believe it or not, the first time I removed them back in 06', I put some holes in them. But I smear permatex anti-seize on the hole bearing after putting the seal back in place. Keeps the outside of the bearing rust free and looking new when you wipe the never-seize off. No failures yet. Also, I never remove any grease, I just smash in more with my finger each year. Half Buell, Thanks for the invite. Probably head up to Sturgis next summer. Will give you a holler . Been camping at Dalton Lake in the Black Hills for last three years. Very secluded and quiet. See the same folks their every year. Don't know them but see them. Lots of deer, turkey, raccoons, pine squirrels, and some elk and a nice lake and trout stream. Badbuell08, Went through Chadron both to and from Sturgis. Looks like I was just 62 miles from your home. That Pine Ridge area is just too cool. Lots of wildlife. Anything to do around Hemingford?? Does it look like the Pine Ridge area? Hi Electraglider, I camped at Dalton quite a few times. Were you 1 of the Buellers heading south in Vanucker Canyon Friday about 3 o'clock? I was heading into Sturgis on a blue city-X. Hope to meet you one day. |

Half Buell, I have a black ULY and my buddy was on a white Road King. I only saw one other ULY at Sturgis and it was parked downtown and spotlessly clean, very unlike mine. A workhorse isn't an Arabian Horse all pretty and skittish. I think on Friday we went over to Black Hills HD off I90 and then went over to Sturgis for beer at the Broken Spoke Saloon. It's possible you saw me but probably not since I don't think I was on Vanocker Canyon Road around 3pm. Later yes, to get back to Dalton Lake. |

Would you all be up for meeting up in Sturgis next year? I try to go every year. Lynn and I stay at a friends house just off Main Street (real close to the Broken Spoke, the one downtown). EG, I do not know where your camp ground is but it sounds nice and Lynn and I would be up for a change. My Sturgis families yard is getting more crowded every year. Frank |

You might want to take a look at Elk View Campground, skinner. It is only 5 miles from Sturgis at exit 37 and it has good food and very nice facilities. A fun bar and moderate entertainment, and though it gets some I-90 noise I sleep like a baby with ear plugs. Others sleep well without the plugs. I've stayed there six times and really like it. |

+1 On the Workhorse; I rolled over 20K on the ride into work this morning. Original orange bearings, only warranty item was a warped front rotor at 12K, and this bike has run like a champ. Not bad for 13.5 months of daily commuting... |

F_Skinner, Meeting up at Sturgis would be alright with me. Dalton Lake is just a great place to camp. 4 miles down an easy riding winding gravel road off Vanocker Canyon road. Near Nemo where you can eat and relax with a beer. Maybe we can get a big ULY rally to camp at Dalton Lake next year. Google Dalton Lake, South Dakota and it will bring it up. |

I have stayed at Elk View Campground before. It was ok and had shuttle service to main street when I stayed there 10 years ago. My first trip to Sturgis was in the early 80s and I always went while stationed stateside... A lot of changes since my first trip but it is all good. I have fun no matter what. EG, I should would like to have the opportunity to chat with you longer than we did at Homecoming a few years ago. Maybe we can talk Buellhusker and the clown that bought my Uly into going. I am looking forward to it as I never had the chance to hang out with Buell riders while there. |
