All right - I've been waiting to get a Uly for some time now (sold my Guzzi two months ago) and finally will be ready on November 17th (I sold a rental property and close on that day) to head to a dealer with cash in hand. Question - Should I get an 06 or an 07? There's decent deals to be had for an 06 - but I've sat on one and it's a bit tall for me: 5'8'' 190 30 inch inseam. I guess what i'm asking is will the 06 with a lower seat be a better fit for me vs the 07 with the reworked suspension. Is there that much of a difference between the bikes? | ||

What kind of prices are being quoted for each bike? We are the same height and inseam,I'm happy with my '06 Uly with a '07 seat. Cost for '07 seat: less than $120. The '07 seat should lower the seat height enough to make you comfortable. | ||

I would get the 07, it addresses many things I thought were needed, but I personally prefer 06 seat height. | ||

If it is more than a $1,200 less get the '06, if not the '07 has enough improvements that it'll be worth it. | ||

With the 07 you get the upgraded oil pump, better air box cover and calibration, lower stock seat, different TPS gizmo, non rusting muffler, fixed kick stand. I'd go for the 07. Don't forget the depreciation built into older model years. Why get the bugs inherent with the 1st year model. Each year will be better. There was plenty of changes over the years on the Harley Evo engines and also with the twin cam engines. They work the kinks out as they rear their ugly heads. 07 is better than 06. They are not equal bikes no matter how similar they appear. | ||

I think if you do some checking you will find that all Ulys have the upgraded oil pump. Buell changed the pumps on all 06 models. | ||

According to info I saw, the actual pump change was 07 only. There was supposed to be an in-line change to the bronze oil pump gear somewhere in the 06 run. | ||

Daves, Were there oil pump issues with the '06? I haven't read any accounts of failed oil pumps here or on the ADV web site. Do you think that Buell will issue a product update on the oil pump? | ||

No there weren't any real issues with the 06 oil pumps. The 07 pump scavenges a little better They both flow the same as far as I can find in the service manuals. | ||

if you go with the '06 you'll want.... '07 airbox $37 '07 seat (the best of all 3) $120 my '06 had the sidestand already fixed - May production date. if i were saving a grand or more, i would use that money to buy GPS, Radar Detector, RAM Mounts, Tank Bag, Tall windshield, oh, the list goes on and on!!!  | ||

I have only ever used premium, but the only way I found not to ping on a hot day is dont stop, ever. | ||

Has anybody with an '06 had the opportunity to ride and compare an '07? True the seat/tires/fork springs/air filter cover are pretty inexpensive upgrades  and you can recover some of the cost by selling the '06 parts (especially the stock seat, lots of riders like it regardless of the height), but if the '07 intake together with '07 ECM programming produce better engine management then what else is left to make the '07 an actually better bike? Even after buying up the '07 upgrades including whatever it took to reflash the '06 ECM, you'd still be hundreds of bucks ahead, but maybe I'm missing something...  Not to hijack the thread, but the '06 ping is real and if the '07 eliminated it I want the '07 fix! I've always used big-brand premium. The warm or hot day uphill accel or even fwy roll on, met with the dreaded rattle, is more than frustrating. I know ping from mechanical noise, every day I head home from work via So CA's Conejo Grade, people all around me who use cheap gas because it's economical rattling a symphony up that hill, economically reducing their car's efficiency and lifespan. Brad1445, get the '07 filter cover, or swiss-cheese the front and left side of your '06 and block off the right. My bike hasn't pinged all week with the '07 cover. I don't pretend to know why not. I don't care. My mpg avg does seem to have gone from 44-46 to 42-44, but that could also be because I've riding the snot out of the bike this week. | ||

My personal opinion is get the '06 and do the '07 mods as you feel necessary. I bought my '06 in July when they were starting the big discounts. I got my '06 with bags for the price of an '07 without. I changed to the '07 seat, inner airbox lid and ECM Flash, and have the front springs on order. Even with my additional farkles, I'm still under the price of an '07 with bags I bet. | ||

The last pic really shows the hard to explain difference in the '07 standard and '06 low. The '07 has very defined triangle for sitting on that is an extremely comfortable firm cushion that is wide where it needs to be and then a defined transition into the narrower more rounded tank area. This seat really makes long distance riding more comfortable in the triangle part and slow speed parking lot maneuvers where you need to move around much easier. I find the narrowness a much better design than before. My biggest gripe about the '06 standard was the width/squareness up front and the seams cutting into my legs. After that, the cushion was too soft for rides longer than 20 minutes. I miss the cockpit room for my legs now though. Well worth the trade-off of increased comfort. | ||

That could explain how the oil level changes from ride to ride, going from X down an 'X' or two, then back up, on my '06. Brian, with your money and height conditions, '07! With that said, ask yourself, will I keep this bike 3-4 yrs. and leave it stock, '07, or will I keep it a longer time and modify it, '06? Good luck and enjoy, "The Slayer". | ||

I helped with the test drive event at Smoky Mtn HD in August. I rode the '07 a couple of times and found the bikes to be very similar in all respects, except the seat. I have the '06 stock and the '06 low. The '07 seat is noticeably softer. Other than that, at the speeds for a test drive, no differences were obvious. | ||

I'm definitely going with the '07. Gonna skip the stock bags, want something more metal looking.. Thanks for all the input and those photos of the seats are just awesome. Now the big question is which color is faster, Black or Orange???? hmmmm... |
