What gear/rpm do you guys typically run on the following: 35 mph straight/flat streets 45 mph straight/flat streets 55 mph straight/flat streets I feel like I am either over revving or too low depending on the gear I choose. | ||

I typically keep the RPMs between 1500-2500, but my bike is not stock. Stock the bikes seem happiest between 3000 and 4000 for general riding, but will gladly go 4k to redline for when you feel like lifting a wheel  | ||

Yea, I should clarify. Those with stock bikes, general running with surface street traffic, what do you run? I WANT to run it around 2100-2600, but either it or I don't seem to like it there. (Message edited by ogre_fl on June 10, 2010) (Message edited by ogre_fl on June 10, 2010) | ||

I'd say you're lugging the motor. I never rode a stock sportster at those low rpms. My Uly is happiest at or above 4K. Course my dad and grandpa always said ride it like you stole it. My two cents. | ||

Around town I run mine all over, the only place I try to avoid cruising is 2900-3100, it acts funny there sometimes. I think that's where it goes from closed loop to open loop? 3500-4000 is the open road cruising sweet-spot for me. I'd go higher but I like my license point free and my insurance rates low. | ||

2500 to 3500 my bike is happy around town. I get a small vibe around 3100. 2000 is to low,single crank pin 45 degree vtwin has some short comings but that gives the bike some character. | ||

3500 to 4000..Just keep it in the right gear at the right time to get the most out of the engine. Do not over rev and do not lug it..Just what I have learned from the Ugly... | ||

Around town no up hill loads my '06 is quite happy at 2700 and up. At 55 I usually will leave it in 4th gear. | ||

Mnrider, I would kill for a small vibe around 3100. Mine has WAY too much character below 3100 for my taste. Most of the time closer to 2000 seems better than closer to 3000. 3500+ just "feels" too high to me when cruising along at lower speeds. (Message edited by ogre_fl on June 10, 2010) | ||

My 07 runs wonderfully through the entire rev range. I was just cruising a parking lot maybe @ 2K and it was fine. It's equally at home and even more so between 3 and 4. It makes this sweet sound right at 4 in 1st and 2nd gear sometimes 3rd. I'd imagine it's because the exhaust valve is actually open at this RPM. Stock exhaust to. Sometimes it "hickups" when it's cold but that goes away within a minute or to. It vibrates but I've been on Buell since 04 and I'm used to it. Drove a Yamaha and it was so smooth I told the guy "What the hell is wrong with this thing" haha | ||

Ogre_fl did you do the tps reset yet,some say that helps the 08 and up model. I'm not sure how cause I have an 06 but someone will tell you. | ||

Mnrider, the dealer put a new program in a few weeks ago and that did a lot to minimize the surge issues I had, but nothing for the vibes I dont like. I dont know if a TPS reset was part of that, but would think so. Xbeau12s, my Suzuki/Yamaha/KTM friends allways ask me "what the hell is wrong with this thing"  This bike makes my LC4 640 Adventure seem like a sewing machine at lower revs. (Message edited by ogre_fl on June 10, 2010) | ||

35 mph straight/flat streets - 3rd, 2.45k RPM 45 mph straight/flat streets - 4th, 2.65k RPM 55 mph straight/flat streets - 5th, 2.75k RPM Any topographic relief or heavy traffic = down 1 gear. Some advocate spinning it up; pump a lot of oil through the cooler; let it breathe. My experience with my '06 is that it runs cooler at low RPM, and I get better mileage that way, too. Many people report, myself included, that the vibrations are not quite as bad once you get a few thousand miles racked up. | ||

Actually sad to say but I don't think my bike has been over 5500 You don't know what you're missing! Never in my life have I ever revved a bike as much as I rev my Uly - don't know why, but I just can't help myself! | ||

I hardley ever cruise mine under 3300.And mine see's around 6000 a lot.I mean it's there,I might as well use it.When in the twisties I keep it in the 4000 to 5500. | ||

I keep my rpms around 4000 in all gears. If it drops below 3000, time to down shift I have found I never use 5th gear except on the interstate cruising over 70 (Message edited by oldwesterncowboy on June 10, 2010) | ||

My 'bolt with Drummer pulls happily around 2000, but the Uly with stocker feels best over 2500. I shift around 4k unless I'm really flogging it. | ||

3500-4500 if just cruisin around the hills. Rides like the Res Ride...4500-5500 easy. And, it got better gas mileage then! (stock '06 with Erik Buell Racing-tweaked ECM). | ||

Reminds me of 2 strokes! 2k to 2.5K in any gear IF I'm stuck behind a slow poke. Above 3K to 4K for the most part. Back roads w/ 35mph limit = 2nd gear. Above 45 = 3rd gear. I hardly ever hit 4th and especially 5th [75mph and up] until we hit some open road and real speed. This is the part that bugs me about the fuel maps and the AFV. Tuners secret- big v twins like big gasoline but lean is mean. I don't think the fuel maps are right for the motor itself. It's been set for the EPA, which I understand. BUT, there is MORE in that motor than what we can easily get to. I'm sure there is way more flexibility and smoother power lurking in there. Perhaps one of the new ECM's from Erik Buell Racing would help. By the way, have any of you put an 08 Erik Buell Racing ECM on your bike with a stock pipe???? What was your overall results and impressions???? | ||

Starting on my ride home yesterday I tried running a gear or 2 lower and keeping the bike in the 3-4000 range. Still "feels" high to me as I am used to general running around 35% of red line vs 50% However it does make for a more enjoyable & fun experience. I will have to see what it does for/to the fuel economy, I cant imagine it could get any worse. The down side is I am going to get a ticket. I normally hang back and run with the flow, very un-aggressive. Running in that range I found I was back to passing folks ('cause its just too easy and addictive) and running up over the limit. I wish my bike would do both kicked back cruising and playful stuff equally as well. |
