Hey all. Rode the Uly to work today. Temps between 97 & 100 degrees out when I left work. 30 min ride home in traffic SUCKED! The bike ran fine but I could not hardley stand the heat from the frame mainly. Not just the right side but the whole damn bike! I did not realize just how much I manuver the bike with my legs till I had to try and keep them off of any part of the bike. I guess its time to put more miles on the water cooled Strom durring the summer. Can you say battery tender and bike cover? HAhahaaa. For real, I will NOT be riding the Uly to work if its gonna be above 90 degrees out. Its hard on the bike and me! Am I a pussy or what? BDRAG | ||

The Uly is not the ideal bike for stop-and-go traffic in hot weather, but you can definitely improve it: (1) Install a Comfort Kit: http://www.buell.com/en_us/gear/accessories/produc t.asp?Menu_ID=2&ProductLineID=2&CategoryID=9&Produ ctID=10029 (a recent thread said some dealer out west still had ~10 in stock) (2) Line the inside of the frame around the rear cylinder head with Thermotec: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16130.html (3) Have your headers ceramic coated by Jet Hot or a similar outfit (Message edited by Hughlysses on June 03, 2010) | ||

Man up - there's nothing better than the smell of boiling gasoline in the afternoon. +1 on the comfort kit. High here yesterday = 73*, about as warm as its been all year. | ||

After 28K mi I've discovered the Uly is fine in traffic OR hot weather...But NOT both at the same time. For those conditions I take the Tiger, then all 3 of us are happy., | ||

Sounds like you have a dirt bike background. On a Uly in the summer, you learn to grip the bike with your 'cheeks'. The knees and legs are held out like air scoops. You gotta never wear shorts, slacks, or just jeans. Zip over double mesh riding pants are a necessary piece of gear. | ||

Oh yeah, when I see 97F + temperatures, for short trips where I might get stuck in traffic, I ride the Blastulys. That little thumper cylinder is out there away from the seat far enough that I don't know if it even gets warm. | ||

Hughlysses O.K I just ordered the Comfort kit from Latus with the BWB discount of 10%. Still waiting on a few parts to get there and they are adding his to my order. 14 days. So we will see how it works. Is there a re-flash avalible on the 2009 modles? BDRAG | ||

Wolfridgerider Dude! Its not my ass thats hot its the whole damn bike! HAhahaaa. I tried one of those and they do breath incredibly well butt, I threw my back out on the Strom with one of those in 10 miles. I could not stay in the seat. It was worse than auomorall on the seat! Once the frame heats up, even my comfort kit doesnt make the Uly a good 'hot weather in traffic' beast. Altho to be fair - its not the only machine out there with those characteristics. My ST1300 - even being liq cooled - aint too great either. | ||

When it's that hot I stay away from traffic areas as I can where I live. Or I just drive the ol' beater Honda civic that still has ice cold AC! still amazes me it works. I do use my right leg as another "scoop" to cool off the bike when it's hot. It's became second nature to do that. don't even notice I'm doing it mostly  | ||

Bdrag- yes, the reflash is available for 08 and 09 bikes. Note there's a whole thread about it here though; apparently some people like the way it changes fan operation and some don't. | ||

I have an '08 uly XT - I installed the comfort kit myself (fun fun) and had the ECU remapped with the latest release. It really helped a lot with heat and plug fouling issues. | ||

Since I'm in and out of this forum. This has probably been covered, but here goes anyway. Is there a way in ECMSPY to adjust the parameters on when the fan will come on and off for a 06 Uly? Tonight or soon I will be looking into this. Anyone? | ||

I have to say on my 2010 with its factory comfort kit overall heat is not an issue so far with temps into the 90's. The frame gets warm but not HOT unless I happen to run real slow or idle a lot just before I shut it down. Then the frame gets hot while its sitting and not running. Hughlysses O.K. then, how much does a dealer charge or should they charge for that? I know the dealer where I bought mine are complete MO-RONS and will probably never get to touch my ride but I will check with a few other local dealers that seem to still have an intrest in servicing Buell customers. Make it easy for me, what does the re- flash do? Fan comes on sooner, less, more, and does this wonder flash help with any other issues like idle or stumbles off the line at a light? I blip the gas before I take off as if its an old carbed bike from the 70's and that is usually not a problem but does give me the POHUPPP every now and then just of idle..... BDRAG | ||

Bdrag- I've seen a pretty wide range of prices posted. IIRC, they're "supposed" to charge you for ~1/2 hour of labor at whatever their going rate is. Hopefully someone who's had the re-flash will speak up. With the re-flash, the fan comes on as soon as the bike warms up and stays on at any speed above 15 MPH. Below 15 MPH, it cuts off unless the engine gets too hot. When you cut the bike off, the fan will come on but runs for a much shorter time than it would pre-flash. The 08's went through several flash updates which made them run better. I'm not sure if the latest flash will do anything for your 09 in that department or not. | ||

1/2 hr. is correct, Hughlysses. Well worth it IMHO. I'm pleased. Before the re-flash, but after the installation of the Comfort Kit, I still felt heat on my right thigh and my frame got HOT. Now, in the Houston area with 90+ heat already, the frame gets warm to the touch but I am comfy so far. I'll report back in August!  | ||

One thing several of us have noted after installing the comfort kit- if your seat doesn't fit tightly against the frame rail on the right side, the new right side scoop will force hot air from around the rear cylinder head out of this gap against the inside of your thigh. You may find that you're HOTTER than you were before you installed the comfort kit. Buellerxt's post backs that up. The re-flash takes care of this by kicking the fan on whenever the bike's at speed so that the air between the frame and the head is always under low pressure. The fan forces the air out through the underseat duct. If you've got an 06 or 07 bike, either seal off the seat/frame gap with a piece of weatherstripping, or seal off the openings in the top of the frame with adhesive-backed aluminum HVAC tape (or something similar). This forces the air through of the underseat duct whether the fan is running or not. | ||

Why does the 08/10 bikes even need a fan with that right side scoop and no fan at shutdown? Is there a ETS temperature that will run the fan at shutdown on 08/10 year bikes? | ||

On my 2010 the fan will come on at idle in traffic and in real slow going after a while. So I see the benefit in the fan in those situations. It has yet to come on at/after shut down. | ||

Conversely, my 06 fan has yet to come on except at shutdown since installing the comfort kit. I much prefer it that way. Fan is original and will hopefully stay that way. | ||

Not much for me to compare too, but in actual riding it seems to work. I did ride an 06 a few times when they first came out and vividly recall the fan wail and the heat. My 2010 fan is very quiet, I barely notice it as I slow to 15 mph. For the first few hundred miles I thought it might not even be on, but then I got in tune with it cutting off. The cutting off is really what I seem to notice more than the fan itself running. Even in traffic/long idle its no louder than any water-cooled bike fans I have experienced and quieter than most. My VX800 fan used to scare the crap out of me when it would kick on in traffic. | ||

I don't think anyone's ever said, but maybe the fan usually spins at low speed after the re-flash. With my 07, it at least seems like that when it comes on, it comes on HIGH right off the bat. At shutdown, it will kick on at high for about 30 seconds to one minute, and then will drop to low for a couple of minutes or so. The fan is MUCH quieter at low speed than at high. |
