Okay guys, this cocky newby needs your help. Any input will be appreciated. Having gotten super advice from you folks back in Nov., on tools and bike servicing, I serviced the bike at it's 1000 mile service and all went well. I had great tools, with your help, the manuals, great input from you guys and a super pictorial on fluid changes from Froggy. I was grateful and felt good after the service. Well, fast forward to today. I was out on a great ride, the bike was on it's game and I thought, 'hum, maybe I should service it when I get home'. I had already, months ago, decided to follow Froggy's step by step procedure every time I service the bike but after reviewing in my mind, what I 'thought' was the complete procedure, I got home and dove in. Well, everything when great except one thing, errrrrr! I forgot to take out the dip stick before draining the oil! I did let it drain for a long time, and during the time my filter was off, BUT, the dip stick stayed in! After noticing it I pulled it before putting in the 2.5 quarts, or the portion that didn't go in the filter, but very little additional oil came out at that point. It seems like a lot drained but I didn't measure it. What do you guys think? Am I safe? Will I get overflow to the air filter and, if so, how will I know and will it ruin the filter? Other than that, the Uly is sure an easy bike to do basic service on. I enjoyed doing it. Please give your thoughts. Thanks. | ||

Duly added Froggy but not worrying, just asking questions and trying to avoid problems. And don't 'worry' I'm getting plenty of riding in ol' carefree one!  What's the deal, you don't have the answer? | ||

Removing the dip stick allows air to enter the oil tank, thus allowing the oil to run out faster. The oil will still come out with the dip stick in, it takes longer because the air that displaces it has to be sucked in from the filter opening and the breather outlets in the heads. Not to worry, if you were a half hour doing the other stuff with the plug out it should have drained completely. You would have seen a small stream of slow moving oil coming out when you reinstalled the drain plug otherwise. Like Froggy said, when you put the new 2.5 quarts in and the level was good....."shut up and ride!"   | ||

Thanks, Etennuly. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I figured it was only a speed of drainage issue but I've read on here about the need to idle the bike for two minutes, after it is already hot of course, to drop the oil into the pan, or some such thing, so I wasn't sure if the reduced 'speed' of drainage would have caused some of the oil to hang around someplace. As for the level, I haven't ridden the bike to warm it up and check it yet. Will do that today. As for Froggy and his 'just ride' bunk, I was riding way before that youngster was even a figment of someone's imagination and being from Texas I've ridden a lot more, and a lot more often, in his area (N.Y.) than he has mine! J/K, I know it is his stick, part of his stunta' tude'. In all seriousness, Froggy is a super Badweb asset and I appreciate the heck out of the guy. Yeah, even with the smart a** comments! | ||

Don't listen to any of these guys. Your bike is going to explode like a grenade.  Now that is a smart ass comment. Actually, just like ET said, removing the dipstick only speeds the process up. By the time it gets to the dripping stage, I'm pretty darned sure air is going up the drain hole and any vacuum is broken. Take some Saint John's Wort and chill. Had a great ride Saturday in the Skagit Valley (Mount Vernon WA). Sun actually came out. New cooling kit and XB9 made a great change. I notice now the front wheel is off the ground a lot on take offs. I find I can still turn corners with the front wheel off. Momma does not even notice. | ||
