My Uly is leaking oil through the starter motor. I called about a replacement yesterday, and they cost $375. :-o I'm going to hunt on ebay before I plunk down four hundred bucks. Does anyone know if the starter is the same on all XBs, or if a sportster starter will fit? | ||

Surely it's worth rebuilding. Maybe an auto-electric shop (IF there are any of those still around) could do it for cheap. It might be something as simple as a bad seal that you could replace yourself. | ||

Hugh, I'm sure it's a seal. I just don't know where to get new seals. | ||

Seals are almost always standard parts. Pull it apart, get the number off the seal, and go to a industrial bearing supply house. I'm sure they can fix you right up. All this of course is assuming you can have the bike down long enough to pull the starter, disassemble the starter, get a replacement seal, and reassemble. If you're in a hurry, maybe you could go for a used starter and then try and rebuild this one once the bike's back together. (Message edited by hughlysses on June 04, 2010) | ||

Are you certain the leak is actually THROUGH the starter? More likely, oil is seaping around a torn, defective, or missing starter mounting flange GASKET. Also, there is a possibility that the LEAK is due to overfilled transmission/ primary, with the further possibility that it is ENGINE oil, leaking through the left side crank seal, and thus pressurizing and overfilling the primary. Try draining the primary, see if more than about 28 to 32 ounces comes out, if it is much MORE than a quart, you have different problems to work on than the starter. | ||

Fullpower - No, I am not certain. But after having replaced the gasket twice, I'm pretty sure that isn't it. I'll check for a engine oil in the primary, but the bike does not seem to use any oil, so I'd be surprised. (Message edited by jlnance on June 05, 2010) |
