So I found out this morning that the rear wheel bearings on my 2008 XT are toast. I spoke to my local shop and they are going to warranty it. What is/are the part numbers to the 2010 rear wheel setup so I can convince them to to replace the entire wheel rather than just the bearings. Do I also need to replace my rear axle or will the 2008 version fit through the 2010 wheel? I figure if I do all the leg work in finding all the necessary part numbers it will improve my chances of getting the new wheel. Also does anyone know if these are on backorder or approx how long it will take to get from the factory? I have a long trip planned at the beginning of July and want to make sure I will be good to go. Thanks in advance. | ||

Have the shop look up the part numbers for a 2010 XT. The wheel will be black in color like your original. They will have to order all the parts individually, there are no kits anymore. There are 3 bearings, the axle, large and small spacer and 2 seals. My parts came in three days after they were ordered. Regarding your old wheel, did the wheel get damaged? If so, they should not have a problem using a 2010 assembly. If not, HD will probably only warranty replacement bearings. If this is the case, you may be able to work out a deal with them to get a reduced price on a new wheel. I was unlucky and lucky with my 08XT. My bearings failed at 80 MPH on the expressway and toasted the wheel and swing arm. HD warranted the whole thing. I feel much better with the upgraded wheel. Note, I had the front bearings replaced just to be safe even though they felt fine. It was a very minor cost. | ||

Thanks for all the help guys. I dropped the wheel off this morning and helped them enter the part numbers for the 2010 wheel. They had never heard of the black bearing upgrade or the 2010 wheel upgrade. I guess in this case them not really knowing too much about Buell helped out cause they were actually thanking me for bringing in the part numbers so they didn't have to look them up. They said the wheel should take 8-10 business days. We shall see. Thanks again for the knowledge. | ||

Nobuell, Will the 2010 bearings and spacer fit in an undamaged 2008 wheel? Or do you need a complete new 2010 wheel to fit the 2010 bearing kit? As far as I know my 08 wheel is not damaged. | ||

Sizes are different; 2010 bearings/spacer ONLY fit 2010 wheels. Zack | ||

Rcinclt, Can you give a few details about your bearing failure? How many miles? What type of riding? Has anyone removed and re-installed the wheel for any reason prior to the fail? Do you wash the bike as often as I do mine (weekly)? Did you hear any strange sounds? Did it leave you stranded? How fast were you going when they failed? That's all for now, thanks! | ||

motor, They haven't officially agreed yet but I gave them all the 2010 wheel part numbers and told them that these were the upgraded part #'s. I will call them on monday to confirm what was ordered. I will let you guys know what they finally decide to do. | ||

My bike is a 2008 XT bought new in late August of 2009. I would say of the 6900 miles it has so far, 50% are two lane country roads and spirited mountain twisties, 20% slab, 20% commuting, 5-10% gravel/fire roads. Not afraid of the rain but never been through any river/creek crossings. In the approx 9 months I've had her she has probably been washed 9-10 times. I have a long trip planned for the begining of July and since I have read so much about all the failures with the orange seals I decided to take the advice of all the knowledgeable riders here on Badweb and I pulled the wheel to change to the black sealed bearings as preventative maintenance. That is when I noticed they felt very notchy and rough. The rear wheel has only been off one other time at 6000 miles to replace the tire. The bearings at that time felt fine. Did you pull the rear yourself to replace the tire? Or did you have someone else do the whole job? I am just wondering if the rear axle was over-torqued or not torqued properly using the two-step procedure listed in the service manual. I know improper procedures will definitely ruin these bearings. I pulled the rear wheel on my 08 XT during the 1,000 mile service just to have a baseline to compare the bearings to at the first tire change, which I suspect will be right around 6,000 miles. They felt very smooth. I will check them at that time again, unless I suspect they are failing sooner. Thanks. | ||

I pulled the wheel myself. I did torque it to the recommended 50lbs, but looking back I'm pretty sure I didn't do the tighten then loosen then tighten to 50lbs. Not sure if that made any difference. | ||

Yeah, I'm not sure that would really make enough difference to matter. Thanks for all your information, I appreciate it! I guess I will just keep worrying about my bearings until someone figures out what is causing these failures. Take care. | ||

The late black seal KBC/FAG bearings are a little better than the orange. The Buell versions of the 6006 and 6005 have an upgraded lubricant over the standard KBC/FAG 6006 and 6005. | ||

20 days later and the dealer still has not received my wheel or bearings... I know it's not their fault but still not good. |
