Fellow Bikers, I'm touring with a Buell XB12X 2008 from Quebec to the American Rockies. The trip was fantastic so far. It's memorial day weekend, and my drive belt broke. Any help will be much appreciated. stuck in Torrington Wyoming Marc 1-418-570-9866 |

Marc, Here's the Wyo. BRAN list. One of these guys may be able to help you. I don't know where in Wyo. you are but you might check the BRAN list for neighboring states too. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/boar d-auth.cgi?file=/42/42.html&lm=1275099923 It sucks having this happen on a holiday weekend. Wyoming - Laramie Motornoggin Rory I'm always willing to help a fellow motorcyclist in trouble. I have tools, shop space, some available supplies, pretty decent mechanical knowledge, truck, cold beer and a few laughs! Wyoming - S. I removed the phone numbers, you don't know if someone wants it publicly displayed or not. If you want, I can express mail you a belt to get you back on the road. Only problem is that due to the holiday it would be Tuesday morning before I could it. |

Hi Froggy, thanks for the offer; this might be an option. How do you plan to ship it? I could pay you all the cost via PayPal. Meanwhile, I keep looking. I'm at the Day Inn in Torrington; got a netbook and Wi-Fi... Rwven, I tried the numbers in the list, no answer. Marc |

Marc I can ship it any way you prefer, but I was just going to bring it to the post office and have them do the "I need it there yesterday" shipping. It is a brand new in the box belt. All I would ask in return is that once you are all squared away just to order a new belt and have that shipped to me. |

Man, Helibuell, I feel for you, Man, but that does nothing for you. I hope Froggy's belt can help or possibly the Casper HD store will have one. Froggy, Props to you, Man. Very cool. Okay, I need to order a belt AND get a SIMPLE 'A' to 'Z', though 'A' to 'C' would be better, 'For Dummies' tutorial on changing belts, by 'ones-self' on the road. I don't want a multi day breakdown. I just read your oil change tutorial again yesterday, Froggy, after using it to great success in Nov. Great stuff! Any good, simple tutorials for belt changing, more specifically belt changing for those without much bike servicing experience? Thanks, and best of luck Helibuell. |

Andrejs or Froggy, The only way I could get fixed asap is for one of you to ship via bus or any other means departing Monday. I could pay with PayPal or ship a belt to you, whatever you prefer. If not possible my other option is to call nearest dealers Tuesday morning. I'm in Torrington Wyoming, at the Days Inn tel: 307-532-4011 room 124 |

1. Remove rear hugger, lower belt guard and front pulley cover. 2. Remove three bolts from right side footpeg/rear brake peddle bracket. 3.Loosen pinch bolt on rear axle. 4. Loosen rear axle enough to back taper out of right side bearing allowing the wheel to move forward slightly. 5. Remove 4 bolts from swingarm bracket (removable piece of swingarm) and remove bracket. 6. Remove belt tensioner. 7. Remove belt 8. Install new belt over pulleys. Do not force, twist, bend, nick gouge or otherwise damage the new belt! 9. Squeeze belt together a few inches behind front pulley to seat the belt in the rear pulley. 10.Reinstall the swingarm bracket. Do not tighten rear wheel without the bracket installed. 11. Reinstall belt tensioner, it may go on hard with a new unstretched belt even with the rear wheel loose. Be patient, do not use tools to pry belt over tensioner wheel. Stick a finger through a hole in the tensioner wheel and push belt belt up if needed. 12. Tighten rear axle to 25 ft lb, back off 2 turns and retighten to 50 ft lb. The new belt will seem very tight, it'll loosen some in about 1000 miles so don't be alarmed. 13. Tighten axle pinch bolt to 45 ft lb 14. Reinstall all the plastic stuff and the footpeg brackets. I think I covered everything....I just did it today so I should have... (Message edited by rwven on May 30, 2010) |

What are all the tools he is going to need? I do not remember, is the pinch bolt wrench in the stock tool kit? |

My only suggestion on Rwven's very good instructions are. 1) when you get your new belt put it on in the privacy of your garage or someplace convenient 2) some folks have found that they just lossen the belt tensioner bolts, versus removing the belt tensioner. Makes it much easier if you are fortunte enough to be able to do it this way. Advantages of doing this are: 1) practice,2) you know exactly what tools to take for a belt change,3) your used belt then becomes your spare which will not be nearly as difficult to instal roadside because it has been stretched, 4) I find my used belt easer to store band saw stile due to the belt being broken in. |

Pso, read my original post. I'm 3000 miles away from my "private" garage... Rwven, I have all the tools. The only thing that will make me happy is a belt... Marc |

Marc, I sure would like to be able to help you with that. Are there any Memorial Day activities going on in Torrington to make the day less tedious? I know it's not "your" Memorial Day....but you might be able to make some memories...there is something to be found no matter where you are. |

Rwven, Here we're joking about my situation, there's no point in depressing ourselves. Today I will walk the town looking for some entertainment. I'm more concerned about my riding buddy. He got to return to work Monday morning. We're a minimum of four days away from home, as long as no other snag pops up. Thanks for the belt change instructions. Marc |

Marc, How many miles on the belt? Did it break out on the road or in Torrington? I feel for you, Man. |

Helibuell, It probably doesn't help you much, but this thread has convinced me to get off my butt and order a new belt before my trip this summer... |

My bike reached 22,000 miles. I broke down 10 miles south of Torrington, on US 85. I was cruising at 65 mph on flat road when it snapped. Bob towed me with his BMW F650GS. I wrapped the broken belt around the fork tubes, tied a knot with a 4 feet cargo strap around and hooked it to the luggage rack of his bike. For your info, it is TOO SHORT and dangerous! I'd suggest a minimum of ten feet, to prevent the force of the tow to pull the front wheel whichever side the tower is correcting. Last Tuesday we'd been riding dirt trails in CanyonLand all day. I suspect the belt picked up a lot of dust, may be swallowing the fine particles. These might have rubbed and subsequently damage the belt. Prior to depart, my dealer was laughing when I wanted to purchase a spare belt for this 7000 miles trip. I got my lesson... Marc |

I'd start calling the folks that live in CO, KS and NB and see what they can do to help you out. There are some ULY riders there for sure. If I wasn't in FL I'd bring you my spare. I had the BRAN help me out when I snapped a belt in NM a few years back. If you ever get a hold a a person on the BRAN they will try to help you the best they can. |

Just got home and found this thread. I have a NIB belt, but the bad news is that my son-in-law left for Casper this AM. I'll check with Northwest Express here tomorrow AM - pretty sure they go to Sheridan, not so sure on the Cheyenne area. Know how you feel, my coil died in Chugwater, WY, last year during the start of Sturgis Bike Week. Ended up renting a small truck from Budget and hauling the Uly back to Billings. HD dealer in Cheyenne doesn't do Buells anymore. This might be an option for you if you're heading north as I should be able get the belt to you somewhere along the way. Have the tools and a lift. 406-591-8453 if you want to talk about it. |

My guess is that he is. He was having a belt shipped down from Quebec yesterday afternoon (not a holiday there on Monday). Was supposed to call me if there were problems or delays. |

Hi guys, My belt arrived from Quebec with UPS at 11:30 am. That's 20 hours from shipment, excellent! I took half hour to install it. I tried to post but we lost internet in Torrington. We took off northbound to Devils Tower and are now in Rapid City for the night. Pretty good progress considering the mid-day departure. I must say I'm impressed by the amount of offer for help and consideration from all on this site. Thanks again to you all folks, Marc |

Had everything ready. When UPS showed up, all I had to do is put the new belt, etc. That was Tuesday. Wednesday, we drove from Rapid City S. Dakota, to passed LaCrosse, Wisconsin, for a total of 663 miles. Looks like we'll be back home in time. I'm still impressed by the amount of support found on this site, more than HD, it seems... So, a Buell owner on a cross-country through the USA does not have to worry about being completely stranded too long. I wonder if the same amount of brotherhood can be found with other make... Ciao, Marc |
