Has anyone experienced a squealing on taking off? It seems to be coming from low on the right side. I am guessing its the idler pulley bearings. If I take off slowly and it starts to squeal, pulling in the clutch will stop it instantly. I guess this takes the load off the pulley bearing? Any thoughts? I imagine letting this go could eventually be a big problem, i.e. seizure. Are the bearings repackable or do I need to get a whole new pulley thingy if that is the problem? |

I doubt that it is the idler pulley if it stops instantly since any time you are moving, the pulley should be spinning. |

mis-aligned belt maybe? Check for rub marks |

Sounds like a clutch problem if it goes away instantly when the clutch is disengaged... :/ Could just be out of adjustment, but who knows?... |

I can't find any rub marks. I would also think that rubbing would not change with the clutch in or out. The reason I say maybe idler bearings is that pulling in the clutch would reverse the load on the idler, potentially stopping the noise? |

Mine has done it since new, it sounds like a clutch to me. Glad it's under warranty.... |

I really do think it is coming from the right side of the bike and it also doesn't sound like an "internal" noise. Is it possible to do a short test ride with the idler removed? Unfortunately, my warranty expired last month. |

Pull the idler off and check out the bearings. If the idler rotates smoothly, it should be OK. |

Do I have to remove the wheel to get the idler off? |

No, just back the rear axle out enough to remove the belt tension, then remove the 2 nuts that hold the bracket on. |

Check for any slop or side play in the rear wheel. My rear wheel bearing sounded differently with the clutch in vs out when it started to squeel. If you feel any side play fix it now! |

Mine has been doing that since new. I figured it was the tire chirping a little. Maybe the belt too. Never figured it out. Still does it. |

The belt can cause that also. They tend to rub on the inside lip of the rear pulley on take off and under load(accelerating). Try squirting a little belt dressing on the rear pulley at the inside lip, just to test it. |

Well...that would mean going to the NAPA store and buying belt dressing. I know you just walk over to the shelf and look over your supply from three manufacturers and decide which one...I just know you do! After owning Cummins and listening to the belt chirp when that diesel decides to stop and the belt keeps going a tiny bit...what's a little belt noise anyway! |

wow..you mean my Cummins isn't the only one that squeaks when I turn the key off?? Coooolllll....I feel better now (not that I was all that worried, since it hasn't changed a bit in 68k miles) |

Belts will squeek if dusty or wet. Ride it for a while in dry, dust free conditions to see if it goes away. |

I live in NM so all we have is dry, however dust free is harder to come by. I took it all apart to check if I could see any visible signs of anything and now that its back together it seems better, but not a lot of riding since then to know for sure. |
