Palmer sells a front end saver here is the description: Front Mount failure is an extremely common problem, with riders (including myself) reporting issues in as little as 1000 miles or less. The design of the Front Engine Mount is far from ideal because the rubber isolator material is working under sheer loadings and not compression like it should. This means that the rubber will tend to crack/tear across the rubber webs (can be seen on close-up inspection) and this will eventually severely degrade the mounts performance. A healthy mount should have approximately 8-10mm clearance between the centre bolt flange and the outer body of the rubber. A common symptom is that the bike feels like it's riding over corrugated iron under braking - the main body of the Mount makes contact with the central mounting bolt attached to the frame, causing all the engine load and vibration to be directly transmitted to the chassis. Made from a special durable Polyurethane flexible compound, this simple, doughnut-shaped device limits the mounts overall movement preventing the higher shear loads from occurring and can also prolong the life of a worn mount. The Mount Saver does not affect the mounts isolating performance. Fitted in seconds without tools. Is this a common issue with Ulys? Or are they providing a solution to a problem that doesn't exist? Isolators do wear out and eventually fail. The real question is, does this solution work? All of Palmer's stuff is good, this is one of the few things he makes that I personally am skeptical on. Also, Buell came out with an upgraded clutch cable retainer part way through the 2008 model year, so you may already have the upgrade. The old style one looks like a bent paperclip, the new style one is black and looks like a mini crowbar. | ||

You Da' Man, Froggy! What a treasure trove of information. Much appreciated. I looked at my June built 2008 XT to see if I had the paper clip or minnie crowbar! lol If it's the 3-4" part that wraps around the clutch cable and attaches to the front frame piece just above the cable boot and right next to the exhaust pipe, directly behind the front wheel, I have the strong piece, though I have trouble seeing a 'crowbar' shape. I also checked my front engine mount and it looks good to me. What does a failed one look like? Ths. | ||

I have the Palmer mount saver, so far so good, I have heard of these things failing prematurly, and it's a cheap item | ||

I also have the mount saver, plus another isolator mount just for backup. The saver is simple, and when I saw it, I wondered, "Why didn't I think of that?" | ||

I just was on his site to pick up the screen brackets and saw the mount saver. so cheap, it makes me feel like i'm doing something about it  | ||

A failed one does not have a large gap between the head of the bolt and the isolator. If you look closely up into the isolator you will see the rubber in the isolator is torn in a broken one. also reportedly you can feel it particularly when stopping. I tried the rubber stopper and it made the bike feel a lot rougher.Will try it again once I replace my isolator, I have a spare and awaiting for the original to crap out. |
