Ok Got a little tired of riding my Ultra on the gravel and dirt fire roads. So I go out and get my self a 2008 XT. The very first time I take it off road if you want to call the dirt road that, I put a small rock through the tire. It was just jagged enough to make the plug not seal right. I got out of the woods, and got it the 75 miles back home with a few air breaks along the way. My question is this,,,what is the best tire out there for the bike? I ride this bike around town, but I want to take it out and play in the dirt.

There are a lot of tire threads around.
In a nutshell, you options for off road are limited due to the 17" sport bike rims.

What there is available will get you even less miles in the wear department.

Its a real compromise.

I have been using the Scorpion Syncs as I ride a lot of dirt roads. Pirelli also has a new tire but it doesn't look any more aggressive than the syncs.

The Dunlop D616 works OK on dirt and gravel.

I think I'm going to give the dunlop a try next time around, I don't think I'll get the milage I got on the Syncs (6,000) but the tread looks like its more agressive.

Pete, I got the same mileage out of the D616 as I did from the Syncs after it. I averaged 6,000 miles per tire from all of them but one, a Sync with a bad carcass. The D616 rear handled well, not too far behind the Sync's on dry pavement, I felt the Sync's were much better on wet though, and I never did like the D616 front tire much.

I went to the Pilot road II because I don't go off road much at all. The first one of these did 11,000 miles. The second one, well it had like 8,500 on it when the Cherohala rock got it.

If I was to play the dirt road thing much I would not hesitate to get the D616 for the rear. I would probably run it with the Sync on the front.

Etennuly,

There are two versions on the Pilot Road 2 tire sold, a " " and a "B". There is a $26 delta between the two at American Motorcycle Tire. The B version is said to be designed for loaded sport touring or two up riding.

Which tire did you use when you got 11,000 miles out of the rear? (I assume that you are talking the rear tire.)

Is that tire mounted backwards?

The Syncs have very thin carcasses and are prone to punctures. I have D616s right now, but I still feel they are a bit thinner than I would like. Several of us on this forum will soon or have already committed ourselves to trying out the Pirelli Scorpion Trails which Pirelli claims have a much more substantial carcasses than the Syncs.

Od_,

I have been running the 'A' version. I read up on the 'B' and maybe should be running it for the weight of the crap I tote on trips and two up. I am quite satisfied with the original one though.

At 11,000 it was shot, but not to the threads like some folks ride them to. It was nearly 2,000 miles after the wear bars started to show.

Vern, you need the B version just for that freakin' windshield! : )

I also run the D616s, and typically get around 5k out of a rear / 10k out of a front. And that included three days of chasing Vern and others around the Dragon on the last set...as well as slabbing to and from Maryland for the same trip. But...I love 'em in the dirt and that's worth the mileage difference to me (I have PR2's on my S2, 3k miles and still look brand new).

From all the tire treads I've read, I'll never put the Syncs on my Uly because I get so much more mileage out of my Dunlops D616. Only once did I ever get less than 10'000 miles from my Dunlops and then I only got 8'000 miles because I ran over a nail on a angle which ripped a 3/4" gash in the tread which couldn't be repaired. Besides Dunlops are an American tire company and I like to support USA.products.
