The warranty on my 09 12X will soon expire and as any red-blooded rider would be, my thoughts are dwelling on which performance mods I should do first - if any. A little more punch and sweeter sound will most definitely be nice, but if it comes too much at the expense of fuel economy, I'm not so sure what it would be worth to me. We all know that one of the Uly's biggest shortfalls as a touring machine is its limited tank range. Well, for all of you who have done the exhaust/race ECM/open air box trio, my question is this: What sort of mileage are you all experiencing after doing these mods? Mileage up - down - no change? What effect these mods have on the bike's economy will play a big role in my decision - mods, or no mods? Mods and buy a Touratank fuel cell? I'd be grateful for any feedback. Thanks. A- |

Economy when you'll spend 1k on mods? My experience with carb bikes is that there is almost no change in economy. -p |

I ride my bike agressively and have the Race ECM, Drummer w/o Servo, and K&N with a chopped up open air box. I get 150-160 miles before the fuel light comes on almost EVERY tank. No matter how hard I beat it or how much I baby it. That's fine by me. Don't remember what I got with the stock set-up as I had that on for the first 20 mile ride home and that was it. |

I know. I hate stopping every 260 miles! I see a 5 gallon touratank in my future. 600 miles of cruising would be great

I run an 06 with K&N, Micron Exhaust, open airbox with breather reroute, and American Sport Bike map. I am getting 65mpg. If it wasn't a pain in the balls to swap the exhaust, I would put it back to stock and do some experimenting. The American Sport Bike map did initially drop my fuel economy, but after some closed loop riding it straightened itself out. |

For economy, here are the averages from 08Uly's comparison site. While Froggy may have hit 65mpg on his '06, it's clearly not average. I think that the averages are a bit low, but that probably has more to do with riding style than fuel injection mapping. After all, a notable number of riders on this list report shelling out rear tires in well under 5k miles. 2006 46.76 2007 49.30 2008 41.75 2008XT 44.22 2009 40.87 2009XT 41.10 2010XT 42.77 All 44.92 Mark SE AZ (Message edited by Mark_weiss on March 17, 2010) (Message edited by Mark_weiss on March 17, 2010) |

My '06 Uly averages between 49 and 51MPG. AS for performance mods it has the following: breather mod semi straight through glass pack muffler (no interactive valve) square idle 02 voltage tweak '07 airbox K&N filter |

I'm not concerned with stock averages. My 09 is on par with the numbers above and Froggy's numbers are certainly not to be expected, at least for an 08 or 09. My best ever MPG has been in the neighborhood of 55mpg. I'm usually averaging about 45 to 50. My fuel light typically goes on at about 150 miles. Outside of Froggy's report, I've never heard of any Uly getting much more that 200 miles on a tank. What I mainly want to hear about are noted mileage changes from anyone who's made, what seem to be the three most common mods; pipe, race ECM, and open airbox. What I don't want to hear are smart ass quips like "economy, when you'll spent 1K on modes?", or speculations based on carbureted engines. My concern is over potentially lost tank range, not $$$. Any comments based on personal experience are welcome. Thanks. |

I'll add that my SOP-Dyno does not perceive a performance increase, with said mods... Hey, we're motorcyclists, smart-ass, is our middle name... |

Your '09 already has the open airbox. The economy hit of a race ECM will depend on the map used. More power will mean more fuel used. Sometimes though, if you boost only the midrange, economy can improve by making lower rpm more useful. (while not Uly info, I was able to boost my BMW's midrange (4krpm) by 15% and saw a 5% decrease in fuel used (shifted to 4th and 5th more than 500 rpm sooner.) No thoughts on the pipe question. The valve in the stock muffler boosts low end, losing that probably means bigger throttle openings. Mark SE AZ |

on my 04XB12S I had the race ECM, buell RAce muffler, filter, open air box. I averaged 54mpg. Not sure what map was on it. Was never changed to my knowledge. That seems about what the stock setup gets. |

Thanks guys. This was the kind of information I was looking for. and is in line with what I expected, particularly the point on the exhaust valve. I don't mind making mods to an engine if 1) the power increase is tangible and 2) there is no significantly negative impact on reliability or economy. From what some of you have said, the economy didn't change much via the pipe, ecm, etc., but it also seems that HP doesn't improve much either. Maybe not worth the $$$, at least for me. Thanks again.
