About three weeks ago, late at night, I was riding my 2008 Uly home from a friends wedding reception. I got about 8 miles from home and was stopped at a red light and the bike died. I pressed the starter button, and the starter didn’t crank. I turned the key off, then on, got a gauge sweep, the check engine light went out after it’s normal time and I pressed the starter button only to get the same results---nothing. I pushed the bike to the side of the road, pulled the seat and found the ignition fuse was blown. No problem, there is a spare 10A fuse right there in the fuse block so I put it in and started the bike. I blipped the throttle and the bike died again.....the iginition fuse had blown again. This time I had to dig for an extra 10A fuse out of my tools and put that one in. This time the bike started and ran fine. I put the seat on and continued to ride home. About 5 miles later riding about 35 mph the bike died again. This time I said to myself screw it, and put a 30A fuse in the SOB. I was able to make it home without incident. Since the bike is still under warranty, so I took it in to have the dealer look at it. I made sure to put one of the blown 10A fuses back in the ignition circuit it so the tech would know what to look for. A week later I talked to Kevin (the tech at Dtwn H-D/Buell) and he said he could not replicate the problem. I’ve had Kevin work on my bikes before and he is a competent tech so I’m sure he did what he could. After all, wiring shorts can be quite elusive and hard to track down. He told me he checked the common wiring issues like around the headset, under the seat, fuse block, ect. I picked up the bike yesterday and am going to ride it some short, local rides. My girlfriend will be with me on her Blast, and the truck will be at home with the ramp and tie downs loaded and ready to perform a recovery mission. My question for the collective is: Has anyone had issues with the ignition circuit? I’m hoping the problem goes from a sporadic short to just plain shorted out so it can be tracked down. Any input from anyone is appreciated and may be relayed to Kevin when (or if) the bike goes back to the shop. The bike has 22,xxx miles on it. My warranty run out at the end of March, but the shop has assured that the problem has been documented, so it will be addressed if it comes up again. |

Jerry, are going to the BOAR meeting today, David_e and I are going and I know David had an issue with his. If you are going today talk to him and he may have some insight. Darren |

I'm stuck at work today so I cannot make it. If you could, Darren, please ask David what happened with his bike, and let me know. Thanks... |

Debueller,I had/have an issue with my 06/07 Uly at the moment, the fan fuse keeps blowing constantly when she ramps the fan up to the second stage or higher rpm,but the other day I was about 30km from home, and blew the Keyswitch fuse15amp one, that killed all the electrics for me,I have a suspicion that because I opted not to pull up and replace the fan fuse, may have contributed to this fuse blowing, however it's only my thought at the moment. I have been getting eror code 36 up which is fan to grnd, and as soon as I can get the bike into my shed,I will pull off the rear shock and do a fan replacement,I don't know if this is the same as your trouble, but it sounds a tad familiar though. You may want to check your coil. Mine did that and it turned out that the coil had fried. |

Hey Jerry - Hate to hear ya got electrical gremlins. Crap! The intermittent problems are the worst & the fact that kevin is not able to source the 'issue' is troublesome. Wonder if it's the connector/splice that routes under the left side of steering head that folks have recently Identified as a problem? I don't recall ignition fuse as being the affected part - but right hand turns did seem to 'activate' the malady. Faulty Ignition switch ? I'm here till friday - then off on 2 month 4 corners trip on Uly. If ya need rescue assistance before I leave let me know. Cell 360-791-7270. Sorry for your troubles. TTFN, j |

jerry, I'm for sure not an expert on electrics but it sounds to me like a hot wire contacting something it shouldn't be contacting rather than ground. I had a problem with my wiring harness contacting the frame as it heads back to the tail lights on the left side frame. I fixed that. then I had a problem with the fuel pump harness and fixed that. Everything is good now. I'd check everywhere that the harness passes through anything or passes next to the frame as well as the right side control housing. I found it doesn't take much of a chaffed area to cause these problems. i suppose it could be a ground if there was enough resistance caused by it. Good luck. Hope this helps. |

I’m going to make a confession here. I took the bike out for a 60 ride the other day and if ran flawlessly. I do not think there was anything wrong with the bike, and here is what I *think* happened: When the original fuse blew it was at night and at a somewhat busy intersection, so I was a little stressed while I was trying to get the bike running again. When I discovered the reason the bike died was a blown ignition fuse, I just grabbed the spare that was in the fuse block, which acording to the fuse diagram of the fuse cover, was a 10A instead of the required 15A. Of course it immediately blew, so I dug around in my tool kit where I keep more spare fuses, and probably put in another 10A in there. That one lasted for about 5-6 miles before it failed then I decided to use a 30A and to hell with the damn bike, I rode home without incident. The next morning, I found the original blown 15A fuse in my pocket and replaced the 30A with the blown one so the tech would have somewhere to start. I honestly did not check exactly what amperage fuses were blowing because in the heat of the moment beside the road I probably just threw the spent fuses on the ground. I’m hoping that the original 15A fuse was either defective or just failed due to heat and vibration. I’ve had fuses fail for no apparent reason on assorted cars ect, and hopefully there was never anything actually wrong with the bike. Thanks everyone for your responses. If in fact there is a problem with the bike, I’ll repost here. Sighed, Embarrassed Jerry…… |

my blast is blowing ignition, and key switch fuses left and right. It is NOT a bare/stripped wire.i have been through everyone one of them.It is not a wire touching metal,or another wire. But i don't know what is causing it.No matter what amp fuse i use,it blows it. |

Hi, I am new to the forum, and have been reading forums for an hour or two now regarding a blown ignition fuse on my 01 X1 " it's a mini 20 fuse " So I understand I might have a grounding issue.... I've replaced it a few times now and every time I turn the key it blows the fuse... My lights, horn n everything else minus the speedo works... My speedo stopped working about 15 minutes prior to the bike shutting off and letting me down on the highway. I have the gas tank removed n the front" flyscreen " removed also to better see all the wiring. At first glance looking through the wiring I see nothing obvious... I tried to follow the 3 wires running off the ignition switch to a clip where they then feed into the rest of the wiring harness.... so I checked that clip too n nothing.... Anybody have this exact problem and have an exact idea of where n what I need to look at to solve this headache causing issue...... Sorry for any informality in this post but I'm tired n just want my bike back up n running.... Thanks. |
