McMaster-Carr to the rescue! When I got my XT, it came with a Cal-Sci barn door. I came to love it except for the buffeting. Then, I had to remove it when one of the poor quality bolts broke. I replaced the screen with a stock Uly screen and hardware from Ace:
I really wanted to go to a stud type set up, so after an afternoon on McMaster-Carr's website, I came up with this:
The "stud" is actually a 10-32 stainless set screw with a 3/32 hex in one end and a cup point on the other. The nuts are black oxide stainless, as are the heavy washers. I ordered the set screws in a 1" length to have room for adjustment when changing from the stock screen to the Cal Sci. Minor brutality with a handheld grinder and the edge of a cutting wheel was needed for clearance at the top location on each side.
Time will tell if I like this better, but I'm tired of cross-threading issues while trying to start bolts with one hand and holding the screen in place with the other. I did like it enough to go ahead while I was at it and throw them on my XB9S with Line-X'ed plastics.
The hardware came in quantities of 25 and 50, so I do have lots of leftovers. PM if interested. (Message edited by JSG4dFan on February 11, 2010) |

No more flyscreen hitting the floor when the last bolt's removed. Another example of out-of-the-box Bueller thinking. Now if only our politicians could all be Buell owners! |

Well I cant speak for everyone, but I use one hand to hold the flyscreen when i take out the last screw, that way it does'nt fall. But hey that might just be me. Do I qualify for "out of the box thinking"? |

Well I think it's a good idea. Lots of us doofuses have reported trouble getting the screws back in without cross-threading. |

Oh, please don't get me wrong, it is a very good idea, I was just being a 'lil bit of a smart ass, hoping not to cross over into just plain ass. I think it looks pretty damn good, is that Line-x bed liner i see in the bottom photo? |

No offense taken here -- one of the limitations of written English is the lack of a punctuation symbol to represent "tongue-in-cheek-sarcasm". The last photo is of my XB9S, and you are correct, it is Line-X'ed. I bought a set of Line-X'ed plastics from another Badwebber sometime ago. I really like it. Coming soon to a thread near you: "Stripped flyscreen bolt hole repair"... |
