Have you seen the comfort kit? It even comes with a guard for the rear pipe. |

Same trip... 1st pix: Note the MotoLights on the fork tubes. These lights have proven to be remarkably durable. I've had them for more than ten years... never changed a bulb... and installed them on probably a dozen different test bikes. 2nd. pix: The front office. On the right is a radar detector. On the left a portable XM radio... radio worked great, ear buds sucked. MotoLight switch is Velcroed atop the left switch housing. The small bag at the right of the XM is for a Canon G9 camera (since upgraded to a G11) 3rd. Pix: Note the "sun shade" wrapping on my right knee. This was at a KOA in Laramie (kitty litter camp site). That fence kept me and tent from becoming flying objects. It was colder than a well-diggers butt in a snow storm. Also on the table is my "Jet Boil" stove." A really great piece of equipment for solo camping

...and finally. I ran the aux lights, XM radio, heated jacket liner, and heated gloves off a direct fused lead to the battery; never had a problem. btw... I keep the aux lighting on all the time, night or day. A couple of Buell factory folks were surprised at this. |

Etennuly.... Does this thing work in the hot temps? I haven't had it long enough to experience anything over about 65-degrees. |

You will love it! No more need for your leg wrapper! Ear buds suck, unless you want to get the spendy custom made ones. I cannot stand having things in my ears. I mounted a set of small headphone speakers in my helmet with velcro, had to move them around a bit to get the fit comfortable. They work great with my MP3 unit. They fit up fairly tightly against the outside of my ears sealing out wind noise and I can still hear traffic even with the volume all of the way up. I have my headlamps both on all of the time, with heated grips, gloves, and jacket while charging my phone or MP3 and running the GPS. I now have added four LED daytime running lights(on all of the time) two front, two rear. |

Well actually my son broke the head band on a pair of his Panasonic headphones. He left them laying in my office.....so I took the broken band off and velcro'd them in. As far as I know he has not looked for them since he bought a new pair.Let's keep this a secret ok? Having looked in some stores since, I would think you want the thinest cross section and something that plays the loudest of the choices at hand, with some good tough covers. I have seen some in Cycle Gear that were nearly double the cost(no head band-came with velcro) that I could not find what would have made them better for my purposes. |

Hi Joe!
The rear one's I just made a license plate holder out of aluminum that was a couple of inches wider and mounted up some truck LED marker lights.
They give a much better side marking compared to the factory taillamp. They are hardwired into the license lamp.
The front ones you can see here built into the hand guards. I don't have them wired yet, but they will really show up. These I will probably wire into a hot lead separate from the headlamps. That way if a fuse fails on the headlamp system these will still be lit. I will change the rear to be that way also. |

Cool. For the rear, you could wire 'em into the aux outlet since I think you have all your aux stuff right off the battery... I'd hook the fronts into the gauge lighting. LEDs are lowlow draw, should be just fine and the circuit is right there, easy to tap into (unless you want all 4 in the aux outlet circuit). I've got a pair of TIR3's coming for rear "hazard" lighting, gonna mount them to the saddlebag brackets at the crossbar junction plate (little triangle thingy). I figure linking their flash patterns and putting an XP green button for on/off on the RH switch housing should give me good emergency pull-over / group sweep rider lighting. That, and it should help cut down on tailgaters I'll post pics when they arrive and I get 'em mounted...I have yet to decide what to do up front, but I think (knowing myself)that front flashers might not be the best idea for me. Kinda like why I haven't renewed my carry permit.... |

I have thought about flashers also, but I would rather re-kit the turn signals for that. When I get them all hooked up to happiness and finish mounted I will start a thread on the subject, will that work for ya? |

Buellerxt: I have a rider backrest for the Glide, but do not like using it because it doesn't allow me to move backward enough. My back never bothers me on the Uly. Mark |

+1 on the no backrest. I had a backrest on both my Corbin and Saddleman solo seats on the Road King. No need for one on the Uly. Of course, I don't have crash bars with footpegs and cruise control to lay back and watch the miles go by on the super slab either. Tend to ride as much 2 lane as possible. |

Reg_kittrelle, I know that Laramie KOA well! How did you find that protective fence? A friend and I camped there several years back and he was 'beat' in the morning! We were right out in the middle of an open, grassy field. The wind was howling, as it's prone to do in Laramie, and he said his tent was brutalized all night with the tent top being blow down to his bag. I have a low profile tent that would work on Everest so I slept well! lol Marks3tbillet and Itileman, I really appreciate the input. I've heard that a number of times now and feel much better about it. I'm really looking forward to the first big ride. Thanks (Message edited by buellerxt on January 09, 2010) |

This is a great thread. Lots of good tips and ideas. I can't wait to get my XT and start touring when the road salt washes away. Etennuly that is one big a$$ windscreen. Do most people feel the need to customize the windscreen on Xs and XTs for touring? |

Steve - I'm quite happy with the stock screen with the Laminar Lip. Does the job well enough - it is a motorcycle after all. |

If you are hesitant to use the Uly for it's very purpose in life then get a different bike. I used to do stuff like that. I would buy a new camera and not take it on a trip because it might get broken or damaged. By the time I got my head around to taking it, it was already obsolete. Go for it and enjoy. After all you must have purchased it for a reason and I'm sure it wasn't as a garage ornament. |
