When I did a trip last July it got cold enough that I put the rain liners in my mesh gear.
We were also going slow enough that my buddy flipped his chin bar/ face shield up and smoked. Second gear was perfect on our Blasts. Just engine braked down the mountain and put us in the sweet rpm spot going up.

Pete,

This may be off your route some but IF you find yourself in the NC/SC area south of Asheville, Caesars Head State Park on South Carolina rte 276 is worth a run, but only if you're near there. Don't drive hours out of your way to find it but if you go near there, try to hit it.

Each year, my job has me at the BMW facility in Grenville, SC for about two weeks and we get a chance to borrow several different cars to go driving around (never get bikes, grrrr) and we ALWAYS find that road ASAP. Those poor Michelins and Dunlops

Go to Google maps and enter in "Caesars Head, Greenville, South Carolina"

Citico Rd - not sure if I did that exact road or not, but have done some like it in that area.
I think that could be sketchy in March with a Uly, unless you had a stretch of great weather and some unusually aggressive tires.
I did these roads in June '08 on a KTM 640 with other street guys that rented KLR's for the day.
Could be wet and slick, and if there are any USFS gates, they might be closed.

More well known gravel roads like Parson's Branch (out of Cades Cove) will still be closed in March.

Well fairly major change of plans althought the thread title is still correct.

We are now going to Mamoth caves for a couple of days and then we have rented a chalet/cabin in the smokies (Gatlinburg)for the rest of march break.

So I'm taking a chance on the weather.

Any local riders want ot show me around?

I will be in the area with the Uly March 14-19

Like I said we go every year and will be riding the area March 18-20. We spend a day doing Devil's Triangle, a day doing Cherohala/Dragon's tail and a day going over to The Snake. All together that gets us about 700 miles in 3 days and a few thousand turns!! We look forward to this trip ALL winter & can't wait to leave Wisconsin for some riding!!!!!!!
