Has anybody here switched to the 8 piston ZTL2 caliper on a Uly? I am giving consideration to making the upgrade and I would love to hear your opinion of it.

I did it for the looks. I all my fuel in frame bikes have ZTL2 now, I forgot what it is like to ride a 6 pot.

Yup, I did the ZTL2 upgrade over a year ago and love 'em! I also installed a new rotor at the same time, since my original was pulsated since about 10,000 miles. I now have about 40,000 miles (13,000 with new setup) and I have no pulsating what so ever. So that can either be the new system...or a change in my riding style. They are more progressive...less graby, strong...but not over powering. The only negative is that it is a little harder to take the front wheel off without taking the caliper off.

The bottom line is that I would do it again!

Wave rotors front and rear, got them from American Sport Bike.

They are lighter and prettier than the stock. They grab at least the same as stock.

I made the switch a year ago to find a long term resolution to the pulsing problem. I've gone through two rotors with the original setup in 25K miles. When I made the change I went with stock pads and a new stock rotor. The new system is not significantly different, performance wise, from the original, slightly more powerful. Mild pulsing became noticeable at about 5K miles, so I cleaned the rotor and switched to Lyndal pads. That improved, but did not totally eliminate the pulsing, and has not degraded with an additional 6K miles. IMO, this change is not worth the expense in terms of performance or to resolve the inherent pulsing problem of the stock parts with this perimeter braking system.

ZTL2 will not cure pulsing, as the problem isn't related to the caliper.

Did you guys also change that master cylinder? I've heard that is a must.

Yes the 6 pot MC has a different connection and will not fit the ZTL2 brake line. I ended up with a Nissin MC from American Sport Bike on my XB and am using the stock ones on my 1125's. The Nissin brake lever is really long, and does not allow you to use the handguard.

a little gentle heat gun persuasion can get the handguards re-shaped to fit.....

The lever is several inches longer than stock, it almost sticks out further than my HVMP bar end.

Maximum you have, hands down, the best looking red Uly out there.

+1 on the color matching.

That is interesting. I had Al looking to see if CRG makes a shortie for it so I could use it, I need to bug him again to see if he came up with anything.

When I had the pulsing problem on my Firebolt, it was the rotor that needed to be replaced. The first three times they looked at it, it was "within spec." However, even within spec, it was the cause of the pulsing because it was warped just enough.

So the master cylinder that is on buell site is it like the regular one just bigger or is there any difference?

Thanks

Both OEM MC's are very similar, I think the biggest difference is the fitting on it for the different brake line. I know it uses the same cap and seal. It uses a different lever than the XB, so it probably has different internals.

I think...
stock XB MC has a 1/2" (12.7mm) bore

the ZTL2 MC has a 14mm bore

will the CRG lever fit on the buell original MC (14mm bore)?

I have Pazzio levers that I have used on both brake systems. So I would say Yes.

I'm a proud owner of a Ulysses '08. I'm also considering upgrading the front breaks to ZLT2, and have some questions I hope someone can answer.

Is it worth it? Will I notice any difference in breaking preformance?

Is it hard to assemble?
