Hey all, Very close to pulling the trigger on a new 09XT. Got the pitch on the extended warranty - normally I don't get them but wondering if 1. it's a good deal with the tire coverage, and 2. if it would be worth a little "extra insurance" with Buell getting the axe. Gotta move quickly so any advice would be appreciated. The quoted deal was about 800 clams for the extra two years. |

Price is good, esp if it includes tire and wheel. T&W worth its weight in gold. disclaimer - I am a Buell salesperson, so take that for what you will. But getting ready to add some to my '06 Uly's term for peace of mind... |

If it is gonna die big, chances are it will happen in the first two years. Tire warranties are usually prorated, see if it covers mounting and balancing, as quickly as the tires wear it seems nearly moot. Read fine print on what is actually covered. I had one one time that covered a gasket for an oil pan leak, but not the damage that could result from said leak(crank/bearing failure). Some States have a three day cancellation clause at a full refund, ask about that. See how the funds are returned. I financed a vehicle, and paid cash for the "extras". It got refunded on the loan after ninety days(they tried to put it at the end of the loan for an early pay off on the last few payments), meaning I would pay interest on the amount over the life of the loan. If it feels like a trap it probably is. |

The tire and wheel is straightforward if it's the HD program. Legal tread depth (I want to say 3/32"), get a nail or "catastrophic failure" that was NOT caused by the big smoky burnout...you get a free tire. Hit a pothole hard enough to damage a wheel? Same thing. |

Ratbuell, yes - the HD program. I believe it covered mounting & balance but I'd have to see the papers on it. I'm light on details because the sales manager and I were only trying to price out the potential purchase price to see if we could come to an agreement - we didn't sit down and go over the policy. |

There is a thread elsewhere here covering 20K maintenance. I have 20K on my 2007 XB12X. I have a five yr plan, (3 yrs additional with tire & wheel during factory warranty) I had fan cut out and was 200 miles from a dealer, heat took out rocker box cover gaskets. I got two nails in a 500 mile rear tire, although I was at the dealership when I found them so no wrecker required, but that was invaluable. Since 2 yr factory warranty expired, had the exhaust gate module fail. To me, I am probably going to have one more failure of something in 30 months which will then make my 5 yr ESP break even or money ahead for me. |

Thanks all. I have a month to think on it and appreciate the input. Like I said, don't normally get any extended warranties (bikes or otherwise) but am a little less sure with this one being my first Buell and with the company closing down. |

Save your 800 clams. Don't pay for something that "might" happen. If something needs repairing, chances are you can do it yourself and it certainly is unlikely to cost you 800 bucks. Life is a gamble but I'd be willing to wager that the dealer will be way further ahead with your 800 bucks at the end of 2 years then you will be if you buy that warranty. As said before, most warranty problems surface within the first couple of years and usually much sooner. Keep a real tight hold of your wallet when you go back in to sign the papers. Riding motorcycles is supposed to be fun wallet draining is not fun. |

If you are comfortable doing the labor on any likely repair, my philosophy is do not buy extended warranties on anything. $800 will buy a lot of parts if you can do the labor, and catastrophic stuff is more likely in the first 2 years. If I feel like I need to buy one, then I should be looking at a different product. A look over Badweb will show that major engine internals are rarely an issue for anyone with an XB. Sounds from other threads like you would be plenty capable of doing most external repairs, and the clutch is very easy to work on (DAMHIK). Buell closing is another reason NOT to buy it, IMHO, as I do not trust there will be any dealer around that will work on it. That's just me though, and I am not the most trusting person out there. Working on the bike myself also keeps me in touch with the machine, so I can see some things coming and get ahead of a problem before it leaves me walking. It's kind of a Zen thing as well (when it goes well, at least). |

If I remember correctly they sent me a "Your warranty is about to expire" notice with a sign up card for extended warranty papers at the two year mark. So later options are out there also. Besides, what if you sell the bike in a year or two? $800.00 warranty that may transfer to the new owner is a good selling point, but you will never get them to pay for it in order to make the sale. |
