Has anyone wired their stock muffler wide open to improve performance? Does it help with low-end torque?

I've got an '06 Uly and was wondering if it would help. I'm thinking an ECM remap might also be necessary.

Yes I have done that; it does not help either low end torque or top end power. Just makes it a little louder at idle.

What is it you are after?

Teeps is absolutely right, it may trick you for a bit but it kills the midrange so bad it's not worth it.

+1 on that! I tried wiring the valve open and it did nothing at all. Leave it stock for the best performance........

Shame it's so quiet though!

An ECM remap will help things out regardless of what pipe you have, including the stock one. Buell did excellent on a map that is 100% street legal, but if you get it remapped and no longer are playing by the EPA's rules, you can make the bike much smoother and run better overall.

Some of us like it that way.

Has anyone run a race ECM with a stock set up muffler?
I have the race ECM and the Buell race muffler. It seems like the motor runs a little soft up to about 4,500 rpm's then runs strong to redline. I have the stock muffler and thought about trying it to help the low end out.

+1

Our bikes are way too lean from the factory...and its because of the EPA regs.

The one complaint about my bike is that it will sometimes bog down on me when I am trying to take off on a quick start from stopped (or more like near stopped). You know, a quick slow down for a stop sign in the middle of nowhere followed by a quick acceleration. Right when I hit the gas hard it sometimes wants to bog instead of pop. I thought it might have something to do with the muffler valve, but it looks like I am wrong.

I'm not too worried about EPA rules. If a remap will help significantly and I don't have to change any hardware, I am all for it. It sounds like I am going to need a cable and some software. Is there a recommended remap for a stock bike that comes with the software?

Thanks,
clang

Clang: Your bike bogging down... sounds like you need to do some fuel remapping. By the way... my experience is that wiring open the power valve (as long as fuel remapping is done too) WILL smooth out the operation of the motor at low RPMs (1000-2000) but will decrease power at mid RPMs (3000-4000)

There is a whole other approach, which I did to my '06. That is to use ECM Spy to remap your fuel injection and at the same time reprogram how the exhaust valve works. Mine is open from 750-3200 RPM then operates normally from 3200 RPM and up. It sounds a lot nicer - deeper, just a bit louder. See this:

Chang, it looks like you have an 06? When was the last time you did a TPS reset?

Mine was bogging when I got it, TPS reset made it feel like a different bike.

I'm looking forward to whisper quiet electric bikes. Peace and quiet is what I enjoy. Our so called civilization is so dam.ned noisy. Just think how much easier it will be for you to listen to music when the engine makes almost zero noise.

Yes, It's an '06 Uly. the tag says it was made Aug '05, so I guess it was one of the first bikes off the line. I had a TPS reset about 2,000 miles ago.

I think I will have to pick up a cable and ECM Spy and see if I can figure out what I am doing. Thanks for the link to remapping. I am sure I will have many more questions after I look at the program.

As for the sound - I don't care what it sounds like, as long as it isn't too loud. If I can get the performance I want with the stock muffler - that is fine with me.

I would like to address an earlier comment - if our bikes run too lean, will enriching them prolong engine life? Will they run cooler?

Thanks,
Clang

Clang: with the ecm programmed to keep the exhaust valve open at low revs, the bike does sound better, not very much louder, but deeper - good tone.

The open exhaust seems to run cooler, the heat exiting the pipe faster, I suppose.
