Probably the first time anyone has asked this question.. I like the muffler valve (whatever you call it) design in the XB12 and the way it seems to provide very smooth power delivery - so I want to keep the stock muffler. BUT is there any way I can make it quieter? I'm kind of surprised how loud the exhaust is even with a 100% stock bike. (ok, I rerouted breather hoses so it's 99% stock) I've got a D&D on the 1250cc '02 X1 so I can get all of the neighbor-waking out of my system on it. I'd like the Uly to be damn near silent! btw it's an 09 XT. |

Tell me you're joking?!?!?!?! It's silent at stock!! Are you sure you don't have your ipod in listening to exhaust sounds?? |

Sleepers are cool. Ever try out a 90's Impala? They sneak right up then pull like a train. Hey, I've done the Drummer thing and loved it, but if there's a way to stealth out a stocker, lemmie know! |

I bet you are listening to it through a full face helmet. Let a trusted friend ride it by you while you stand on a sidewalk. It is quieter than you think. My stock Uly muffler says 80 db on the emissions stamp. That's not much. |

Remember that the intake is aimed at your head. You might be hearing the induction gulp. |

I would guess you are hearing the intake as Nate stated above. To quiet that you could line the inside of the airbox cover with Dynamat. That may quiet it. I do believe this is a first of someone wanting it quieter. |

+1 on intake noise. IMHO that's the coolest sound the bike makes- much better than my 1125! |

You would be more likely to hear the rattling of the valve train that is nearly as loud as the exhaust. You could fix that with a quart of Lucas Oil Additive. I'm sure you could find an exhaust tip like that the old VW's had to stick on there as a secondary baffle. JC Whitney is still around, they seemed to have millions of them back in the seventies, I bet they still sell them. |

you have your hearing aid set too high! Turn the volume down some! |

Does the Lucas additive really clear up the top end rattle? Do you replace one quart of the motor oil with the Lucas? |

Well, I did it once. I was on a trip 600 miles from home in mid summer when my fan quit. So I put the thick and chewy oil additive in with my dino oil. Yeah, it does make it quieter than the synthetic oils and dino oils alone, but I don't have a bottle left to read the label to see what oils it is compatible with. Lucas says they recommend their stuff to run in HD engines. HD says don't run additives. Seems like it is up to you, it is your engine. I didn't have any trouble with it. But I don't use it now either. Back in the 70's and 80's I used STP in all my race engines and street engines. |

I'd recommend Bardahl, if they still make the stuff. --Doc P.S. They do! Got a website and everything... (Message edited by Dr_greg on November 18, 2009) |

Lucas Oil Additive can work with synthetic or dino oil. On a diesel board I belonged to there was a discussion about this product and how it actually causes the oil to foam. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/images/lucas/lucas.h tm I used to use it and did notice that my Mobil 1 I used at the time would come out slightly white. I have since stopped using it because of the above article and others that can be found by simply Googling. |

I've noticed that there's a lot of valvetrain noise coming through the airbox, and that makes sense. The exhaust volume though surprises me with it being all stock. The only thing I've found that wouldn't require heavy modification of the muffler is a silencer in the tip. Anyone have experience with these? I mean the bike is pretty quiet already, but if I can make it quieter without affecting performance, I will. |
