My buddy rides a KLR.... I just bought a Uly.... So today we went dirt road hunting. I still have the Strada's, so I know the bikes not that capable, but it's the first time I've ever had more than 3" ground clearance, so I figured it be doable. And it was! Most of what we hit were gravel roads, but there was a bit of dirt and lots of just gravely crappy pavement mixed in. Had an absolute blast! Nothing fast or hardcore. Just putting around on roads that 90% of people will never see. The bummer was it's so dry, even after 50 miles of gravel/dirt roads, the bikes aren't dirty/muddy looking! I will DEFINITELY be doing this again. |

Nice ride! I got rid of my '08 KLR for the Uly last spring, no regrets there but I got shafted on the resale value. Off hiway can be a bit unpredictable, your bud might want to get a little more protective gear than sneakers & jeans! |

Running shoes...I love it! Nice and breezy in hot weather, and helpful when you need to ditch the bike and make a getaway on foot! |

Nice ride Mike! That is exactly why I picked up my Uly... Go where most others don't/ can't. |

I think the KLR is a great bike. I owned an 06 for a while until I traded it for my 06 Uly. Now I own an 09 XP and really like it to. You are brave to take an XT on dirt roads, I was told those tires are meant for street only. Great pics to! |

>>>I think the KLR is a great bike. I agree. Loved mine and have two more (got them for FREE) that I am rebuilding this winter. |

Mark, I had to write an essay, so we didn't get to leave till afternoon. I also forgot my phone was on silent from the symphony the night before (for school). The tires are meant for the street only. But they worked. I would have been out of luck if we hit anything technical... but we weren't trail riding, we were on country roads the whole time, so I wasn't worried. The KLR is a badass bike! It's in my top 5 bikes to own. It has a 6 gallon gas tank too! He's adding aluminum panniers and some better tires to his in the spring. All my parts for my electrical/light projects are slowly showing up. After I ordered everything I found better places to buy it all. Bummer! But I'll just have to sit and wait for the parts to arrive. |

I added a red led marker light to the red reflector beneath the license plate. It only comes on when ya use the brake. |

I was planning on adding a truck marker light where that reflector is. They seem to be about the right size. Something like this: I just wish I could find one in 'dual filament' style for running and brake light mode. Edit: or maybe I'll just buy a variety pack of resistors from radio shack for a buck or two, and mess around with them until I get it where I want it. HMMM idea's are forming. I couldn't help it and ran out to grab that light. I also stopped by Radio Shack and bought a variety pack of resistors for some messing around. I figured out that my 'idea' would work. And it works quite well! I found that a 150 ohm (I think I'm reading the stripes right) resistor is perfect to dim the LEDs to match the factory tail light in running light mode. Then when you hit the brakes I have it running through a modulator at full brightness. It strobes for 1 second then stays at full brightness till you let off the brake and it dims ever so slightly back to running light mode. Of course its all wired up with a 12v power adapter plugged into my wall, then a bunch of jumper wires on my desk right now. I'll install it after I can paint the chrome thing maybe Thursday. Here's the basic diagram:
Thanks Mark! AND good job thread jacking! |
