thanks mikef5000, that's just what i was looking for.looks like the rainier replaces the explorer so it should be pretty much the same fit. |

As opposed to an electric "vest", I'd suggest a jacket liner like Gerbing sells. Heat to the entire torso is a good thing. My arms get cold, too... --Doc |

I went the full jacket liner route. +1 on the warm arms. Picked up a lightly used Tourmaster off the Adv site for a good price. |

I think back when I bought my electric vest, jacket liners were not available. If they were, I`m sure I would of went for the warm arm "option". When my vest finally craps out, I`m there. |

I use Gerbing's liner and gloves and rate them very highly. Gerbing recently came out with micro wire gear that is very thin, very durable, and heats up much more quickly, though mine heats quickly. Definite worth consideration. I hope your trip is a safe, enjoyable, and memorable one. |

I prefer the Warm & Safe to my Gerbing. I have the new "microwire" which is thinner than the older one. It does heat up quickly and I do like that you can not feel the wires like you could on the old ones. Two things I dislike about the Gerbing is the connector is a hard plastic piece (3 inches square) that you can feel on the side of your stomach. If you were to go down, it would dig into your side and probably cause an abrasion. Secondly, the collar is too high. It gets caught on the base of the helmet when I turn my head. The Warm & Safe's connectors are only wires and it feels more comfortable to me and their collar does not interfere with my helmet. Secondly, Warm & Safe's product is temperature neutral, meaning that you can wear it all day comfortably (except on real hot days). Thirdly, the price is better on the Warm & Safe and the company is very easy to work with. (Message edited by myzen on November 16, 2009) |

i am going to pick up the jackrt liner since i live in the northeast and ride all year, but i am curious just how cold is alaska in july? |

how cold is alaska in july? I spent 5 years in Anchorage and summers there are 50's for a low and 60's to low 70's for a high. Fairbanks is a whole nother story. Their high can reach 90 on a good day. If you're in the mountains your temps will vary from the above but not much. Probably mid 40's at night but you won't have a lot of true dark. Mostly twilight. Be prepared for a lot of wet riding though. Watch out for MOOSE. |

i got the xm antenna for the zumo on ebay and i got a great deal on the service. i paid $ 77.00 for a years service , i added the traffic and weather , anyway it ended up costing 135 for the year with everything. for the service you have to call xm at this number 800-998-7900 , theres no coupon code just say you heard about it on the internet it's good on new radios and renewals GO ERIK BUELL RACING !!!! Rode my 08 Uly to Prudhoe bay, alone, this past June. If you have any questions I would be glad to help. It is a great bike for a trip to Alaska. You will need an extra gallon of gas to make the 240 mile run from Coldfoot to Puedhoe. I have pictures on my web site "bluemooncharter.com". Just click "photos" and select "alaska". Have fresh tires shipped to Barb's Alaska Leather. Do not purchase at the Harley dealer in Whitehorse. THey will charge you three times the cost of the tire and two times average install. |

My recent experience with Gerbing jackets will lead me to make my own jacket liner. They use a small panel for the back which does nothing for the area just above my waist. On my ST1100, at 50F and 8 hours, I was sweating everywhere else and freezing at the waist. I have their Cascade Extreme two piece suit and the jacket is 3/4 length, and this is not enough to keep that area warm. Also the protective armor weighs in close to 3 pounds so I tossed it (looks like conveyor belt rubber!) and trimmed some armor I bought from Cycleport. However the placement of the armor pockets in the Gerbing jacket arms is not quite as impressive as Motoport (Cycleport) or Aerostitch. I trimmed a lot of length off the shin, hip and back pads too. Someone posted instructions for making your own wired gear on the Adventure Rider site and this will make a good project for winter. The Gerbing gloves are great, very warm without the heat turned on. I have used the Gerbing liner in my Motoport jacket, under the Motoport rain liner (I have the Motoport Marathon kevlar mesh) which helps but the panel is a cheap shot at proper warmth. |

Yep, enjoyed your pictures Captain Lou. I do have some questions as well if you would be so kind. In some of the pictures you have 2 tires roped to your bags. How did this work and how many miles did you ride this way and why. I figured you would swap tires where you had them shipped or did I miss something? Are most of the cabins in your photos places you stayed? You seemed like you stayed in cabins some days and camped others? Any issues with bears? What do you have for a wind-screen arrangement? Seemed like you had a BMW riding suit. How much rain did you encounter and what problems? How much of the time did you ride with other riders you encountered along the way? What was your budget for the trip if you had one? How many hours or miles a day did you ride on average? Did you ride West to Washington and then North or a different route? Did you get in any fishing??? |

just an update ,the trips still set to go late july early august , depending when i actually stop working. picked up a motoport air mesh jacket / pants with the liners and gerbings jacket / vest and gloves off advrider for a good price. looks like i'm gonna race up and do my sightseeing on the way back since i'm leaving a few weeks later than the original plan. |
