I ride to work if the temps are above 20 degrees, and the bike is missing quite a bit with 40 degree mornings. I don't, and it runs fine. I just let it warm up for a few extra minutes, and go nice and easy for the first few miles to let everything warm up, including the tires.   Hughlysses Posted on Saturday, October 17, 2009 - 08:17 pm:        Yea, most important thing you can do is let the engine warm up before riding and get thoroughly warmed up before getting on it. It will stumbled and run rough at low speed until it warms up. Go outside, crank it up, come back in and gear up. I'd also wondered about covering the oil cooler, just don't want to overheat the engine. I don't know how much it contributes to the overall operating temperature of the engine. Maybe it's just fine as is and the occasional "burp" is to be tolerated. I rode my KLR in the teens, but it's water cooled and I kept the radiator covered with a cardboard cut out. Also had a temp gauge to keep an eye on it. Without that you will have no idea. If the oil is getting over 200 F at the swingarm then your engine is getting pretty hot. Make yourself one. When it's cold a lot more gunk gets spit back into the intake causing the motor to stumble.
