I was just looking around the owner's section, and noticed they put the 2010 owner's manuals on line (they weren't there a week or two ago). One thing I was interested in is the "new" oil level check procedure mentioned in the 2010 model year changes publication. They now give both a cold check procedure (basically to make sure you've got enough oil in it to crank it up) and a hot check procedure. The hot check procedure says ride for 10 minutes and at least 5 miles, put bike on side stand, then idle for 2 minutes and shut off. THEN check oil level. I wonder if that'll correct the oil level discrepancies reported by 08-up owners? | ||

Thanks Hugh, I've been waiting for that. While my '08 was very erratic when new, after about 3k miles it seemed to settle out and has been very consistent measuring immediately after shutting down ever since. 2 minutes of idle is a nice warmup prior to a ride, but I don't know about it's affect following a ride, especially with the latest "comfort kit" download. Also, while I'm a relatively new owner, and haven't the passion of others on the Badweb, I'm still very glad I bought the Uly and intend to keep it til either it or I can ride no longer. It is sad HD discontinued the Buell line, and I think it's a move they'll regret later. | ||

Thanks for the info Hugh. I discovered early on that on my 09' XT the only way to get an accurate reading was after riding it and letting it sit for 2-5 minutes before checking the level. This new info makes sense. Let it idle for a while to let the oil settle but not leak back down into the crankcase. The discovery process was the usual trail by error (overfill).  | ||

That's been SOP for most if not all HD's for a while. I'd been checking my newly acquired '08 XT that way (just doing what I have always done on my HD's) and wondering why everyone was having problems with erratic oil levels. |
