Well, I got my Uly back from the dealership today. They apparently discovered what the problem was and corrected it. Thanks, guys. The fuel pump fuse had blown. Because of a... Are you ready for this? The culprit was a... ground fault. Imagine that! Well, that's what I got out of the service writer. The Buell tech had already gone on home. Maybe they'll really call me tomorrow and pin it down some more. At least the Ulys are being consistent and predictable, now-a-days. Next time I'll know. And I'll start carrying fuses with me in my bags. Anyway, the dealership was apparently investigating to see if it possibly wasn't really a warranty issue because of my farkling, but decided during their investigation that I hadn't messed with whatever ground wasn't working right. They had to replace the tail lamp LED, too. I guess I can understand where they're coming from. It can't be pretty trying to pay for all that and still suck up "warranty" work that really isn't, depending on what the manufacturer says about the real cause of the problem. I'm just glad I didn't have to fight my way out of that kind of hassle. Turns out they were looking out for themselves while they were helping me, but doing it honestly. They decided it was really warranty stuff after all. Works for me. Now if I can just track down the last of the things they did while fixing my bike, I'll be happy. I've already repointed all my lights. The twin spots I had to pull up from shining on the ground right in front of the tire, and the main lights I had to pull down from scaring the birds in the treetops. I refastened my Stebel horn so it doesn't rattle anymore. I've about decided I'm not going to fight the clutch adjustment war anymore. Every time I take the bike in, I have to readjust the clutch to where I like it. I'm getting tired of that, so maybe I'll just start liking it where they adjust it to. Now if I could just track down that burning rubber smell. No hot spots on the tires or the belt; sniffing around the tires and belt yields nothing, either. Well, whatever it is, I'll track it down eventually. Ah, dealerships! Can't live without 'em. But sometimes, it's an attractive idea for a moment or two... |

When my fan was on its way out, it smelled like burning rubber. Only my fan didn't make the rattling sound like others did, it just turned a lot slower than it should. (you could just about count the blades as it turned) Check your fan, that may be the problem. |

Put a note on the clutch lever saying "Please don't adjust". The service calls for a clutch adjustment, so they do it. I used to leave notes in the past about various things I did/didn't want done. |

Glad you got your bike back... good thing you check it over afterward too. Froggy, that's a good idea about the notes, wish I'd thought of that back when I had to use dealers for warranty issues. Let's see... "Please remember to tighten the oil lines to the new cooler", or "Please remember to replace all the bolts in my primary cover, and wipe the Formula+ off the muffler", or "Please don't tell me you checked the V/R when it turns out you didn't", or "Please remember to order the parts so they're there when I bring the bike in for the fix", or "Please don't ding up my front rim in your POS rack", or "Please don't leave greasy hand prints all over the airbox cover and grips and seat"... Etc. I don't like dealers anymore. |

Haha! Luckly for me, the worst note I have ever needed and never used was "Please don't wash!" They got a mouthful after I got it back from the 1k service |

Notes, eh? That just might do the trick. Of course, it's not that I don't want them to adjust the clutch, it's that I want them to adjust it to where I want it. that one might be tricky... I'll have to give it a little thought. Thanks for the idea! "Please don't wash" Hah! They actually thought I would wait a day to pick it up so they could wash it the next morning, since it was pretty late on Friday when they got it done, back together and tested. No, that's probably not quite fair. Maybe it was more like they were concerned that they couldn't deliver it to me all washed and pretty if I picked it up that evening. Corporate procedure stuff, maybe. It turned out to be one of those, "I want what I want and I want it NOW!" things for me. 2 weeks isn't really long, but I was getting tired of hiding my impatience. However, I did notice during my rides today that 2 weeks without the Uly has apparently made me a better rider. It seems that while I was riding my 800cc Suzuki cruiser instead, I was so used to the Uly that I was trying to do the same things with the Suzuki that I had been doing with the Uly. That's okay, but I REALLY had to work at it. Seems like paying attention to the details of riding the Suzuki like I did the Uly make a real difference now that I'm back on the Uly. Who'd have thought? Thanks for the ideas. I do know the smell isn't the brakes, either. I'm starting to get suspicious of oil splurge from overfilling. I'll keep my ear peeled for the fan, too. Gotta be something, although it's getting less noticeable with time, distance, and speed. Hope I'm not just getting used to it. I only ever smell it when I stop after the bike gets hot. I'll keep looking. Runs just great, otherwise. Had a blast today - like it was new all over again. I know it was just me, but still... |
