My son went through the Rider's Edge course when he was 15 years old and now he is 17. He has ridden his 1989 Yamaha YX600 Radian to the last two Buell Homecomings and has ridden to Sturgis on his bike this year and when he was 15. When he turned 16 we went to the DMV and I kid you not, they didn't even know that 16 year olds could have a motorcycle endorsement on their drivers license. Apparently parents are so afraid of their children riding motorcycles that none get licensed at 16. Anyway, they finally agreed that, yes, he was eligible for a motorcycle endorsement on his license.
My son rides his bike to school everyday and is a very responsible rider. I was a bit slow on the draw this past week and missed getting him an 08'XB12XT with 1040 miles that was on Craigslist for $7400. That was over in Ohio. Traded-in bike at a dealer near Columbus. Sold real quick.

When I was in high school back in the early 70's my friends and I all had bikes and we road them year round, even in the snow. My son goes to a pretty big high school and he is one of only maybe 3 that ride motorcycles to school, usually only him. Seems like more of us need to pass on our passion to our children. They all love the crotch rockets that inevitably get them in dutch with johnny law. There a plenty of cheap older model standards still around that are great first time bikes. I figure that the more my boy rides today, the more experienced he'll be tomorrow.

My son's in college and rides his Big Red Pig to and from campus. He's not a big fan of my Ulysses, he prefers to ride my Electraglide. Might have something to do with the stereo.

My "kids" 27-24-22 have varying degrees of moto-interest. My son used to occasionally ride with me when he was 10-12, but that was it.

My older daughter, who was afraid to for years, gave in once when she was 15. On her very first ride with me we were rear-ended at a stop, so that did it for her and bikes. Luckily everything went easy and the a-hole only broke my fender, but she got whiplashed and had to do therapy for awhile.

My younger daughter is a different story. Been riding with me since she could reach the rear pegs and loves bikes. She's been learning on her boyfriend's dirt bikes lately which is a good place to start IMO. She can reach the ground easily on my Uly but wants some kind of sport bike for her first and of course won't listen to my advice to the contrary.

School and work are her first priorities right now though, fine with me.

My daughter, at 20, has ridden dirt bikes with me for years and last week got her motorcycle endorsement after taking the MSF course. We took her out for a checkout ride last weekend on the Husky SM610 and she did really well. Mom rode on the back of the Uly and near squeezed me to death the whole ride, but in the end had to admit she was impressed with her skills. Dad is proud as punch. The SM is a great bike for her to start with as it feels the same as a dirt bike and is really confidence inspiring.

I've given her David Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling" to read and heed. Every ride we'll focus on building some specific skill. I'm stoked to have a new riding partner, and there's no better riding partner than your kid. I have a ton of great memories of riding with my dad.

Like EG, I was one of the few kids to ride to school back in the day. I had a new Yamaha 650 that was a pretty hot ride back in 1974. There were only about 3 or 4 of us that rode regularly, and we rode year around.

My oldest son rides a Fat Bob.

We have been on two camping/motorcyle trips together (MN to WA and WY/CO to MN).

My son will miss the next riding season. He is in the Infantry and has just started his second tour in Iraq. I will miss my riding partner.

My daughter loves going for rides. I can't wait for the day that she can ride with me on her own. Which will be at least 12 years, as she's only 4.

Before I get blasted, this ride was just down to the corner. We never ride in shorts, and always wear helmets.

I have three boys ages, 18,20 and 24. All three were brought up on bikes and the oldest and youngest have their license. All three still ride dirt bikes. I think it is in their blood.

My oldest son bought something called a "Street Bob" in March or April of this year. His younger brother got so inspired he bought himself a "Fat Bob". Between them and my Uly, the local Harley/Buell dealer almost has to give us a fleet discount when we buy stuff. 'Course, "almost has to give us" leaves them a lot of wiggle room.

I managed to convince the oldest to take the Rider's Edge course a year or so ago. I'm still working the youngest, though.

We ride together occasionally, but I'm not really much of a group rider, even with them. As my dear old pappy used to say, "Don't follow. Don't lead. Don't join."

Slinky, good name, you must be about 7' tall to be flat footed like that!

Cute picture of your daughter.

My younger daughter took the Rider's Edge course, and then did a 3,000 mile ride on her Blast with my wife and I on our bikes. She did a great job, and both my wife and I were, and are, very proud of her.
However, I have to disagree with Baydog; While I enjoy riding with my Daughter, my wife is the best riding partner I've ever had.

I really enjoy going on trips with my wife and son when we all are on our own bikes. Gas stops get a might bit more expensive though.

My 8 y/o daughter loves to ride 2-up with me. I drop her off at school on my way into work and believe me, when she pulls up in full riding gear, the other kids practically drool. I do get some withering glares from the soccer moms though!
Is there anyone in the Southeast GA are who likes to ride with their kids? It would be great to meet and do some day trips with like minded parents.

My step-daughters, now in college, no longer ride with me. Haven't since junior high. But they used to love to ride in elementary school and we caused a major sensation when I rode my Old Wing to pick one up from school on an early dismissal day due to heavy snow storm.

Freaked the minivan ladies out.

My nephew rides. I got him a lil 50 for Christmas last year, much to my sisters dismay.
Hes ready to move up to a bigger ride, so we are gonna get the winter project out of the way and put a 110cc in a twenty inch bmx frame. (www.bikeberry.com)
If you cant buy them from the dealers anymore... ya gotta build em. (hes only 7)

I used to have a 98 VFR in my garage along with my FXR(now replaced with my ULY) I say used to because my son got his license this summer and took over my VFR. Nothing cooler in recent memory than taking my first ride with him right after he got his license!

He's 16, been riding dirtbike for yrs, and is taking the MSF course too.

22 year old girl, on dirt bikes since she was 8. Trackdays since 14. Motorcycle license the day she turned 16. Has cooled off to bikes now. Rides occasionally.

21 year old boy, a little dirt while growing up. Started trackdays at 14, won 5 regional championships by 17. Decided to get a street license at 18. Rides occasionally when we can take trips together.

20 year old girl, on dirt since 6. Always bike crazy. Licensed at 16, well before her auto license. Rides daily.

18 year old boy. Really liked dirt riding until about 12. Totally lost interest in motorcycles. Don't know where he's from.

Crusty- don't get me wrong. I love riding with my wife, and we ride often. She's the best riding partner I've ever had. But it's a bit different than riding with your kids. I just think there is something special about passing on a passion to your kids and having them go after it with the same level of passion you have. Having shared interests with your kids is the best thing ever.

I rode a lot with my Dad growing up and I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

My stepdaughter (26) got her motorcycle license at age 19. She got her carlicense at 18. You have to be 18 here (Netherlands)
My own daughter is 9, next year I'll take her for to the store for motorcycle clothes a helmet, boots and gloves. She can't wait.

My dad was riding a Harley Knuckle back in the forties after getting out of the Air Corps (long before I was born). I grew up on motorized bikes and mini-bikes. Got my first street bike at 15 (a new '72 Yamaha LS-2 twin, 100cc of unbridled HP). Saved up newspaper delivery money for years for that bike. Been riding ever since. Passed my love of motorcycles to my eldest son, who now owns an XB12STT and a Suzuki DRZ400. He can only ride the Suzuki at the moment as he's limited on HP (being under 21 yrs old in the Air Force stationed in Italy). Makes me proud to see that he's carrying on the family traditions.....Hopefully he'll pass it on to his kids. (shouldn't be a problem as I think it's in the genes....)

I have 23 and 19 year old sons, they both have bikes(that I maintain and insure) but they do not ride! Maybe twice this year, the 19 year old rode the Ulysses he took the very long way both times. But neither of them have ridden to speak of this year. The older one works full time at a bike shop and hasn't ridden at all, not even a shop bike. Every year for the past 5 years we ride a two to three day trip together but we didn't this year as work for both of them got in the way.

Oh, by the way, if you want to ride a motorcycle, don't work at a motorcycle shop because there will never be enough time in the day to ride....ever!

My son 21, rides an '07 XB9R. My daughter 23, took the MSF course and got her license, but still has no bike. She thinks she needs a sport bike, but I think the little Honda 250 Rebel she rode in MSF is about as much as she can handle.
