I have the buell side and top case system on my new to me (07) Uly. I noticed that the center case rack was held on with one bolt and 2 zip ties. I am trying to put the rack back on with the correct hardware before this weekends ride. I called the dealer for help, "well if these even are the correct part numbers, I will have to order them". Now I am coming to the real knowledge base for help There is only 4 bolts holding this top rack on. 2 go into the side racks using bolts and nuts (this is where the zip ties were) 2 go up through the front of the top case rack, into the bottom of the hand handles the triple tail is attached, near the rear of the hand holders. The hand holders are tapped for this bolt. Is the hole metric or standard threads? |

Sorry, but right after I posted this I found the answer on twisted throttle. and I can't figure out how to delete a message. 1. The upper toprack mounting bolts supplied with my Fehling kit were the wrong thread. The correct thread should be SAE 5/16"-18 TPI (fine thread) x 1.5" long, not metric M8x35mm. The M8 will fit, but just barely, and risks damaging the alloy threads. 2. The subframe parts on the Uly are all made of alloy metal, of course, so be careful when threading the bolts. The soft frame metal is very easy to cross-thread. Use blue Loctite and err on the side of too loose, rather than too tight. |

the saga continues I brought home 5/16 fine thread bolts, they don't fit either. the one that did have a bolt in it is definitely 5/16 course thread (did last owner tap hole?) The hole that had the bolt missing is not metric, or 5/16 fine. Course starts into the hole but binds in around 1/2 of a turn (corrosion?). I guess I need to but my glasses on and look harder at the hole. |

I guess in case someone else has this problem it would be worth the storage. I think I found the problem. the directions I found on the internet said SAE 5/16"-18 TPI (fine thread). 18 TPI is course, 22 TPI is fine. after replacing 3 missing and 1 broken bolts, she's all back together.
