Buell flat out lied about fuel mileage on the '08's! You should average between 35 and 45. Don't ever go on a ride with someone claiming 50+ miles to the gallon, it will be a snooze fest, and all the peach cobbler will be gone at that quaint lunch spot hidden in the mountains!!!! |

Buell lied? The followed EPA procedures and got those numbers. Next you are going to say they lied about the SAE rated horsepower. If you ride your bike in the same way it is tested per EPA procedures, you will get the same numbers. Hell, I have routinely obliterated the EPA numbers without much effort. Even on my Blast, I recall its rated at 68mpg combined, I have gotten 85mpg on it no problem. Oh, and that bike is bone stock, I can't wait for the aerodynamic streamliner fairing, 100mpg here I come |

Even if you followed the EPA's outdated rules for checking fuel mileage, you couldn't get 60 something MPG's from a XB12X! Let me see....drive 35 mph around a one stop sign town for 30 minutes then go do a whoolping 50 mph on the highway for an hour! Yeah, that pretty much replicates driving in America in the 21st century! Oops, sorry, that should average about 62.78694646 Miles Per Hour! My Bad... |

My 2008 got crappy milage at first too. Like 35 or so. As it broke in, it improved to 40 or so. Then they came out with the ECM flash and it ran very good with the milage averaging at 46. Last week, I went on a nice 2500 mile vacation and the milage hovered around 50. I followed PA route 6 out to OH with lower speed cruising and not too many stops. |

Buell has damn little to do with it beyond publishing the results . . . . Be mindful it's calculated by the same folks who are calling the Health Reform Act "deficit neutral". |

>>>>>Be mindful it's calculated by the same folks who are calling the Health Reform Act "deficit neutral". Hah! that's a good one. It's neutral to most of the public, because the lucky few will be paying for it! That's like talking about "free" school lunches, and "free" healthcare at the emergency room! Ok, off my soapbox... |

I hate to bust your balloon, but I got (not averaged) 62 MPG on several occasions with my '06 XB12X and I've gotten 61 with my '09. The rides were at an average altitude of 6500'and higher above sea level in the mountains cruising at 65-70. Around town I get mid 40's on average. The EPA Urban Loop is used to calculate average MPGs you can probably find the test protocol on their website. |

My 08 XT was getting 38-48 mpg until I hit 6500 miles. Now it is getting 45-55 mpg routinely depending on how aggressive I get. |

I guess I'm way too aggressive then because my 09 XT with almost 10K miles on it only gets about 35-40 mpg. It also has all the latest ECM updates. I must not be too aggressive because I got 9K out of a set of tires. |

Mine seems to get worse numbers on the highway. also, lugging it doesn't seem to help too much. It seems to prefer 2500-3500. |

I must not be too aggressive because I got 9K out of a set of tires. I'm on my third rear Dunlop D616 and I have over 28,000 miles on my 06 Uly. I always get over 10,000 per tire! I changed out the front tire at the 20,000 mile service. gas mileage: I ran out of gas on my way to work today. it had 31 miles on the fuel reserve light and only 197 on the uly trip odometer for the tank. It's burning a little more gas in this colder weather we're having here now because about 6 weeks ago I ran out at just over 36 miles on the reserve light. |

So since we're talking mileage, how do I get out of having stop every two days for gas? I need another gallon or so on tap so I can make three days. Other than carrying a gas can, has anyone ever added a reserve tank into the system somewhere. Guess it would be kinda tough with the fuel in the frame...sorry for the highjack. |

I get 45-50 MPG. My last fill gave me 50.1 MPG. I have the comfort kit installed but not the latest ECM flash. I may have the flash performed this week. So far everybody seems to like it's operation. |

I have not checked the EPA regulations for the XT. I will be buying one next week, and its first road trip will be 550 miles. Should I plan fuel stops often? I had an 06 Uly, but didn't have it long enough to remember the mileage. |

I would look for a petrol station round about 100 miles just to be safe. When you do that a couple of times you'll be able to work out your average mpg. |

On my way down to Georgia I got 46 mpg at 70 mph. Once here we filled up one morning and road some great twisties including the Cherahola Skyway. I got 188 miles before we filled up. I got 52 mpg! Higher elevation and slower speeds helped but I was not babying it through the twisties. The weather is awesome for riding this week! |

Should I plan fuel stops often? I had an 06 Uly, but didn't have it long enough to remember the mileage. I bought my XT week before last and had a 250 mile ride home. Now my bike already had 700 miles on it, but the first traveling tank of fuel went 160 miles (to the light) and figured 47-48 MPG. Now for the disclaimer. I'm 6'4" and 275#, I do add a little extra drag and typically get worse mileage than friends with similar set ups. I have no doubt a rider with a less robust body type could get substantially better mileage. |

2009 XB12XT 10,000 miles Daily commute about 75 miles at 45 - 80 mph. S.F. Bay Area (so moderate 50 - 80 deg). Mileage is always 44 - 46 mpg. I don't baby it and I usually take side roads for some fun twisties. Usual RPM range is 3000 - 4500 with the occasional run up to the redline. Don't notice any difference in mileage on weekend 2 up rides either. If I ride it real hard for most of a tank I'll get more like 40 mpg. |

I am constantly amazed at the mileage some people here get. Most of us seem to be it the same range, in the 40s depending on riding with a few highway spurts up to the 50s. I have a mileage tracking ap on my iPhone and religiously track all my consumption. This range is exactly where I am on my 06. When I kept hearing how Froggy got 65-70 mpg I was very curious, but one of his recent posts explained it clearly to me. When he said he found 2500 rpm to be the best for attaining high mileage, the light came on. If we rode 50 mph, which is what 2500 rpm is in top gear I think we all would get that kind of mileage, but I don't want to get rear ended by every car on the road. I also don't find any difference when riding two up, if anything I get better mileage because I am riding slower since the passenger is usually one of my kids. Some food for thought. Curious to hear Froggy's response. |

I live at Sea Level - getting around 42 MPG on a 08X - MPG improving with age. I noticed that riding in the mountains, MPG was better then riding at sea level. |

Seriously, Froggy, do you ride that slowly to get the wild mileage? |

My thoughts: Froggy knows the Closed Loop sweet spot of the DDFI system (50mph). 40 to 60 mph range under a steady light load (no down grades or steep upgrades, decelerating or accelerating) for 2 to 3 minutes Referenced 2001 interdealership training program of DDFI systems". *CLOSED LOOP (Froggyville!) Cruising between 40 - 60 mph at operating temp. (1500 to 3500 rpm) **OPEN LOOP (Gas pump queen) Idle and starting slow speeds under 20mph (1500 rpm) High speeds above 60mph (4,000 rpm) accelerating from low speed accelerating from high speed decelerating Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
