I had just put the cover on my bike cuz a quickie storm was comin but didnt look too bad, (on radar) So, I'm surfing the BadWeb drinking my coffee,.. I hear glass shattering out back CRAP.. its my patio table. It lifted the umbrella up and down onto the glass shattering it to smitherines. 5 min later,..my neighbor knocks on my door, says: "you know your bike was out front layin on it's side"? low and behold there she was laying on her side with the cover still on it. Not too bad, I can only see the right brake lever broken and right footpeg broken (badly bent) GREAT!! No Brakes!! I have to ride it 40 miles tomorrow to get to the dealer. Hope they have the parts in stock. First thing in the morning I am gonna go to pepboys for some JB weld or something for the brake lever. It's unusable unless I can fix it. Will the passenger footpeg fit on the front peg? Can anyone recommend a better glue for the bake lever? Thanks, Mike (Message edited by xb12xmike on August 18, 2009) |

I assume you are talking about the rear brake lever by your right foot. Although I can not recommend riding without a brake you should be ok as long as you use the front. I wouldn't rely on a glued up brake lever ever |

it is the front/hand brake lever and the right footpeg, the rear/foot brake lever is fine. I am gonna have to use JB weld for the handbrake lever. Can I replace the rider footpeg with the passenger footpeg? I dont wanna waste time if I dont have to. Thanks Mike

Mike, The pegs are not interchangeable. You ain't JB Welding that brake lever either. Call the dealer and make sure they have the parts and take the cage to pick them up. |

If I remember correctly, the rear footpeg will fit in the front opening, but the fold indexing parts(spring and ball) will need to be removed and saved for when you put it back on the rear. You'll also have to leave the front peg return spring out as there is no slot in the rear peg for it. Shouldn't take you more than five minutes to change them out to verify the fit. Don't remember if the peg drop is the same, but in an emergency situation, you should be able to use it. Always wondered why they never made the brake/clutch lever assemblies universal so you could swap them in an emergency (clutch lever getting broke, for instance). Seems like it would be possible without too much extra material added to each lever....... (Message edited by prowler on August 19, 2009) |

Ok will try the footpeg,.. I have ridden without the front brake before,... (like I am 87 on a sunday afternoon) I was scheduled to bring it in today for new bearings and tires but if my parts aren't in yet I will have to wait. But they have Bankers hours. I still have to give JBweld a shot. I think will work and now I "have" to try. thanks Mike |

I wouldn't trust my life to JB weld! If that stuff lets go you will be the one with the broken parts! Get a new lever or don't ride. |

This, and a replacement clutch lever I need to put on my S1W, brings up a question. I've seen hinged / collapsible shifter and brake levers that have a pivot pin, spring, and will allow the (shifter for instance) toepeg to rotate up and out of the way in a tipover. Has anyone ever thought of doing that for a handlever? Something that would allow the lever to "bend" away from the grip, opposite the usual usage travel, could work. Maybe. Which reminds me...I need to call Al for my S1W.... |

good idea,...or some kind of super secure snap/lock for the levers. Like,.. the brake-clutch would have sturdy stubby levers and a long lever piece would snap-in and would still be secure, but could snap-off in a fall over. I can see the commercial already!! Snap-on..click-click..Snap-off!! |

I sure hope that people are JOKING about using JB WELD to fix aluminum!! Works great for leak-stopping in non-structural cracks - stuff like that but here's the rub: JB Weld will only give you about 2000 psi bond strength against a typically sanded/cleaned surface. The parent material (Aluminum) is good for more than 40,000 psi tensile strength. Your JB Weld joint is going to mean you have LESS THAN 5% of the original strength. |

I had a tip over a few months back which though not immediately, eventually broke my brake lever. I bought replacements for both and drilled them to act as a weak point where they would break off but still give me enough lever to operate. I got some good help from this thread especially from Arcticktm and Mark_weiss. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/370135.html |
