Well, it looks like I snapped both straps on my left bag. When I get to work, I put my Buell mesh jacket in the lid of the left bag and my helmet in the top case. When getting ready to leave this morning to go home I put the helmet on the triple tail and unlatched the side case to get the jacket out. At this point the helmet slid and I grabbed it. The case fell open, both straps broke and the lid hit the concrete parking chock (cage stopper). I've been planning on some vinyl graphic on the painted part of the bag so the scratches aren't a problem. My thought on replacing the deckelhalters is to use braided spider wire. I plan on cutting the loops open on the broken deckelhalters to remove them from the pins. Then make the new ones out of the spider wire and wrap them with electrical tape to make them stiff enough to move out of the way of the seal when closing the bags. I am not sure how many pounds of test I need to hold the lid. |

I used 16 (maybe 18) gauge electrical wire to fix mine. Hooked them around the existing rivets and ty-wrapped them. did it a couple of years ago, still going strong. |

If ya wanna engineer something, ya gotta think like an engineer. Did you ever wonder why those straps break? Imagine what would happen if they didn't break. If you replace the engineered "weak link" in a system with a stronger part, you transfer the part that will break to the next weakest link. They cost like 5 bucks and can be ordered through lots of BMW dealerships. |

Did you ever wonder why those straps break? The wire ties on my ghetto setup work the same way. They will slip if the load is too great. Not too exact, but a step in the right direction. The straps don't cost much, but how do you put them in. There's some sort of special pop rivet. Can't remember now, but it seems like there was something difficult about that part of the deal. |

It's a "blind rivet". It comes with the new deckelhaulters along with flat washers. |

+1 on xbimmers set up - except added springs (left side case) to catch the lid. BTW, dropped my bike going about 70 after clipping a deer - the Hepco Becker case did a pretty good axle slider imitation. Filed off the big pieces of plastic on the scrapes - ugly but still useable. |

The 25 year old Hepco and Becker bags on my BMW are considerably less robust than the Uly bags and the old bags use metal knife hinges to support the lid. They've supported some considerable weight and have never torn the bags apart. I find it hard to believe that the new halters were deliberately engineered to break if they were subject to a shock load from the 'massive' force of a dropped open lid. Mark in AZ |

I read all the suggestions, thank you very much. First I am a tight wad and didn't want to spend money on this. The stainless option looks pretty. 16/18 gauge still going strong. 400 pound test line, I'm fresh out but have some 15 pound mono. So, to not over build it, I did 4 loops of 15 pound test mono on each side leaving the broken deckelhalters in place. Then wrapped the line and old beckelhalters together with black electrical tape. It seams to hold fine for now and the stiffness of the deckelhalters lets it close with the line inside out of the way. After taping it, you can hardly tell it is there. Works for me for now. |
