While I don't think the Uly is a great dual sport bike, as many has shown, it can hold it's own in the hands of somebody who understands how to handle it in off-road conditions. That being said, I got an email today that had this in it: F 800 GS Wins Cycle World Magazine “Best Dual-Sport Bike in 2009” Cycle World magazine has selected the BMW F 800 GS as the Best Dual-Sport Bike in 2009. “With ten classes and 547 motorcycles to choose from it is no easy task to narrow them down,” says Cycle World. My questions, anybody get Cycle World? Was this some test in their magazine, or just some random pick thing? Was the Ulysses included? If so, I wonder where it fell in the testing. Anybody know? You have to read between the lines, "BMW ad revenue is highest amongst manufacturers competing for Cycle World Best Bike comps". I get CW and enjoy reading it but notice that Buells are regularly left out of comparo's where they should be included. BMW's are great looking bikes but usually overweight and most assuredly over priced. |

I agree with the ad revenue angle. Unlike some I do not have a lot of dirt experience, but I would think the best true dual sport would be something lighter like 250cc-400cc range. I really like that GS, but I wouldn't buy one to really perform the duties of an enduro for the same reason I wouldn't expect the Uly to function well on really nasty off road conditions. My little bit of offroad experience tells me that weight=bad. |

I don't get Cycle World. The Ulysses has no place in a "dual sport" compro. Buy a KLR650. If you need more than that . . . . |

Court: I wasn't implying that the Uly belonged in that category, but when Cycle World claims they looked at over 500 bikes, it does make you think that bikes like the Uly were in fact looked at. That being said, if it was tested, I was wondering where it placed. I wouldn't expect it to be super high on the list for lots of reasons, but it does make you wonder.
