Hello Uly riders, I'd like to open up a thread about helmets, and see what each one of us uses, and also ask what do you think about AFX helmets, particulary this one: http://www.afxhelmets.com/helmets/fullface/fx-37ds.php?show=silver Has any one used it, or any other model of this make and how does it go with fitting. I have the AFX90 and it's OK for a cheap helmet. At first it was noisy cause the shield was loose,but you can loosen and adjust the shield mount to tighten the shield against the gasket now it's not bad. It's more aero than my last Bieffe. | ||

I know nothing about AFX helmets; so I can't say anything either positive or negative. However, I have my eye on an Arai XD-3: http://www.araiamericas.com/default.aspx?pageid=57 #/helmets/moto/xd3/solid/black-frost I read a couple of reviews on it, and they both were positive. Also, I used to wear an Arai Quantum E and really liked it a lot. I think I'm going to have to try on an XD-3. It may be my next helmet. | ||

I have been thinking of getting a new helmet so I have did a little research the last couple of days. I like the HJC brand, the IS-Max modular helmet. What I like about it is the intergraded sun shield that will come down when you push a button on top. It is a pain to worry about if I need a clear shield or a tented one. I leave for work and it is dark but ride back in the glaring sun. Does anyone have any incite on this helmet?  | ||

Ericcogdell, I wear an HJC Sy-Max II which is quite similar to the IS-Max. It's a fine helmet. The sun shield was the main reason I bought it and I am not disappointed. It's a great value for the money. | ||

I had the AFX FX-37DS for a short while. The price was very tempting but I had to sell it because of a very irritating distortion in the shield (I tried both the clear and tinted). I use a Zeus 2100B dual sport helmet (peak and shield) that was similarly priced - can't find a U.S. distributor any more. The peak is great for morning and late afternoon riding when the sun can be blinding. In the summer I usually run with the shield up with a pair of Wiley X glasses. Lots of fresh air! Wish I had the $$ for an Arai XD3 or Shoei Hornet  | ||

I just picked up a new Bell Star last week. So far it's been a great helmet, best venting on a lid I've ever felt. The aerodynamics of the thing are amazing. It cuts through the wind like a snipers bullet, a noticeable difference from my old Shoei's. I like the idea of the flip down sun shield (which the Bell doesn't have) but they do have a photo-chromatic lens that changes from clear to dark tint (for $80.00 yikes!). I like the looks of the dual sport helmets, but don't really ride the Uly in the dirt enough to make them practical. | ||

I'm currently looking at the HJC FS-15. I was looking at the IS-16 with the sunshield, but read somewhere that it's a bit louder, probably because of the lever on the top for the sunshield. I need a quiet helmet, so am considering the FS-15. I'm also considering a Shoei TZ-R, but am trying to figure out if the extra $ is worth it. I've had Shoei's for years and have liked them, but wonder if it's time to see what an HJC is like and save a little money... | ||

Pantlee77, I just bought that AFX "dual sport" helmet. Otherwise I ride with my Scorpion 1000 street helmet. I always wanted the Shoei hornet or an Arai XD3. The last two are $$$, so I bought the AFX fopr around $100. Here's what I think: It's very noisy. It catches way more turbulence and the visor sucks it around. Turn your head to the side at over 50 MPH and it kinda sucks your head around. Vision is excellent. Quality seems adequate, but I don't really trust it since I only spent about $100. It's light and comfortable. It moves a lot of air, so it's cooler than my Scorpion or other street helmets. I wish I saved up for an Arai XD3!! Someday.... Bottom line, I don't think you'd be happy with it as your primary helmet for the Uly! | ||

Bculy, I have a Shoei TZ-R and and HJC AC-11. I like both of them. The Shoei fits me very well but I wish it ventilated a little beter. It was supposed to be very quiet, but I wouldn't say it is "very". I don't find it any quieter than the HJC. I have looked at the Scorpion EXO-1000 and am wondering about your experience with yours. Good and bad of it? Thanks | ||

I bought a Shoei Hornet from Japan before they became available in the US. Good helmet but a little susceptible to cross winds (puts torque on your neck muscles). I was wearing a HJC Symax II when I crashed last month and it performed very well. One worry about flip-ups is that they might open during a crash. Not a problem here. Flip up visor is a bit of a gimmick. I'll buy another one though. | ||

The other day I stopped at a Wendy's for lunch and left my helmet on the seat of my XT. I noticed a fellow walking by checking out my bike on his way in and after he got his food sat near me and stuck up a conversation. Since you don't see that many Buells around here I figured he'd ask about the bike like most folks. Nope, he wanted to know what helmet that was! Nolan N103. Good helmet -- I have a hard time getting a good fit with my fat head and find Nolan's fit me very well. Women have their purses -- we have our helmets. I only have six helmets that my wife never lets me forget about when she wants another purse or pair of shoes.  Mike | ||

I have looked at the Scorpion EXO-1000 and am wondering about your experience with yours. Good and bad of it? Glenn, I really like mine. It is going on a couple years old now and I have had no problems. I replaced the shield twice due to scratches. The shield is very easy to remove and replace - I take it off to clean it a lot. Venting is fair. The pump/cheek pad is something I never use (probably due to my fat cheeks). Anyone try the Shoei Hornet DS? I've been looking at it for awhile. Bought a Hornet from Japan when they first came out, a year before they started importing them to the USA. It was for more of a round shaped head. It put a lot of pressure on my forehead. Ended up with a big red spot if I rode for more than 1/2 hr. Ended up selling it after only trying it a couple of times. Currently have a Shark helmet. Same situation. Too much pressure on my Neanderthal forehead. The only 2 helmets I've ever found to be all day comfortable are Fulmer and AGV. However, they are also heavy. Why can't someone make a helmet that is lightweight and longer front to back? | ||

Tried an evoline on at Mortons recently and really liked it......it sports a pretty big "visual" size profile but the conversion feature is spot-on. Venting looks a bit iffy and colors were a short list. At $360 or so it is pricey but the features are unmatched. Only other gripe is the fighter pilot shade feature while smooth to operate was just about a 1/4" shy from optimal drop down for my eye line. That said, I want to test ride this helmet and would really like to get one if the fit is good and noise is at least normal. On another equipment note, just picked up a pair of TCX XCR Air Tech boots that will get the test for a 4 day trip through the Outer Banks, etc starting tomorrow! I know they will be sweet on airflow and the build quality is great. I 'll give a review in another thread next week. |
