While my dealer was sorting the wheel bearings for me, I had the bike serviced and Syn 3 put in it. I figured 10,000 miles is about right to start using synthetic lube. It says Syn 3 is "Made in USA", so who makes the stuff and what standard is it? | ||

Lord, don't start that. I remember 2 years ago getting chain e-mails from people saying "SCREW the Arabs! There's one company that doesn't source ANY oil from the middle east. CITGO! Buy Citgo gas! All their oil comes from the Americas!" A year later I'm getting chain e-mails from the SAME people saying "DON'T buy oil from CITGO! All their oil comes from Venezuela! SCREW Venezuela!" Damned if you do and damned if you don't. I'm using castor oil in all my vehicles...  | ||

H,I just went from Syn 3 oil to Amsoil,as the HD oil is inferior to most,it hast the worst wear properties I could see as for crank and journals and the like,so I changd at 16,000km'sI always had what I thought was a rough sort of gear shift,in other words it felt notchy,after changing to the Amsoil,I swear that the shift is smoother,remeber on thing,HD put a tender out for their supplies,as they don't make oils,and big business being just that would naturally take the lowest tender,not the best quality oil. I changed because the oil was available close to home from a supplier,but also because along with Motul oils,it was the best oil for the job,do a search for what you want,and just at the moment I can't remember who the supplier was to HD for the Syn3,butI know I'm happier moving away from the stuff. please note this is my 20cents worth and not the views of all,but I like my soapbox anyway Phil | ||

AMS oil is made right here in the good ol' USA from carefully selected hand crafted synthetic hydrocarbon molecules. Just like a good microbrew. I do use and trust the stuff - seems the Uly runs a bit cooler and shifts with a little less effort. | ||

Jphish +1 on your comment for Amsoil mate,was 1 of the reasons for changing to it,I believe that it does run cooler and shifts easier also. | ||

Hey Aussie - Hows things down under? I havent used a temp gauge but my butt & fan tells me it does run cooler, and my perpetually broken left toe is highly sensitized to shifting pressure. Good empirical argument for AMS oil. j | ||

hey Jphish,well it's not really riding weather here at the moment,we've had about 8 inches of rain over the last month,so riding days have been limited,hoping for some sun this weekend(We are in Winter here ATM,but at least we don't get snow...LOL)My observations with Amsoil are pretty similar to yours,I have actualy removed my RSS for winter,as the engine was not warming up,you could feel the cold hesitation surge all the time,Thought I'd have to put a cover over it like you guys do to your semi's in winter,to shut down the air flow,get some miles under your belts over there you lot,we will as soon as the sun comes out. I was planning on going to the HD Syn after hitting about 5K on my '08, but this thread has me thinking differently. I have always changed to the oil that was going to be run in the machinery from the first oil change,that has been the way with all my earthmoving machinery and cars as well as the bikes,so change when your ready,as for Syn3,nup,no way,nadda,I won't use it anymore,Amsoil all the way,and in both Holes as well. | ||

I changed to AMS oil @ 1000 mi service. There are various opinions on the question: does this allow sufficient "break in" to seat rings ? Keeping in mind some very tight tolerance auto engines, corvette, BMW, etc (and some M/C engines as well - Vrod) come with synthetic oil at birth. while I'm no engineer, I think a 1000 mi is sufficient for friction to do 80% of it's job. The simplistic view is I want to reduce heat / friction over the long haul, there's plenty of 'wear forces' at work on an aircooled engine already. j | ||

What are the opinions about putting the Amsoil 20-50 in the primary too? I've heard of people (like Aussiexbox above) doing it with a possible clutch adjust. | ||

I just bought two 5-quart containers of Mobil 1 15W50 Syn at walmart for $22/container. That works out to $4.40 per quart and then tax. Not bad for Uly loving oil. | ||
