This under 3k RPM shake is a huge flaw in an otherwise great bike. Little back-roads like the ones the Uly is supposed to excel at cannot be ridden at 3 and 4k RPM all the time. There is enough power and torque at 2500 to 3000 rpm to hold the 25 and 30 MPH speed on these tight twisty hilly little country roads, but the old lawnmower shake is completely unacceptable. I have tried every trick in the book. I am quite sure it is an over lean condition and it that is what it takes to get a bike EPA legal to market, then it is what it is. Is there a gel filled elastomer? I heard there was one developed but it made the Buell run too smoothly. |

I have found that remapping the ECM makes the Uly have much better manners in the idle through 3000 rpm range. Better but not perfect. Many people advocate switching to the lower primary gearing as a means to improve low speed dirt road and off road functioning, yet I would hate to give up the tall 5th gear... it is sweet! Especially since the engine pulls very nicely in the low ranges, it is simply a bit too "herky-Jerky". In the old days the classic solution for this situation was to increase flywheel mass... it makes the vibrations more muted and the low speed performance better. Guess what? The stock sportster 883 flywheel has considerably more mass than the lightened Buell flywheel. Anybody know if the Sportster flywheel will swap with the 2006 Uly? |

Man, I don't get it. Maybe it's because I'm young and limber, but I LOVE the shake of the Uly. You may say that having a thumper before the Uly (just got rid of my SM610) has gotten me used to a shake, but I rode a V-Strom for most of my 2 year riding career and those bikes are as smooth as a baby's bottom. The vibe adds character and LIFE to the bike. To me, it's almost therapeutic. |

To me, it's almost therapeutic. Agree completely. If it was bone jarring ALL the time, I wouldn't like it much, but it's only at idle or really low RPMs that it shakes. At speed, it's smoothish. The vibrations are low frequency rather than a high frequency buzz. THAT would get annoying. It's like a 1978 Trans Am with more aggressive cams. Rumble at the stoplight and angry delight at the twist of the throttle. I guess I have a spongier ass than most. |

I guess I have a spongier ass than most. Why do you set yourself up like that? |

Anyway you cut it, A flaw is a flaw. The relentless pursuit of perfection is not just a Japanese thing. If the buzz bugs me, it is a flaw. A glaring flaw because I bought the Uly to be a back road bad ass, not a back road marital aid! I reckon for 5 or 6 K$ more, I could have bought a GS. They don't buzz - kind of suck - sure are ugly - but smoother than a baby's butt. I'll fix this Uly yet. |

Do the 9 swap. Problem solved. If you do MOST of your riding off road, "re-gear" your bike for the majority of your riding. If you had a sport bike that your rode mostly on short, twisty tracks, you'd swap out the sprockets to maximize drive out of the corners rather than top speed. The Uly is no different. It's not an expensive fix. Sure a lot less than a GS. |

I rode a 1200GS and hated it. Try before you buy, for sure. |

The Uly probably is too big and heavy for real offroad riding, but the GS is like going trail riding on a Goldwing. Especially with giant suitcase size aluminum "Paniers"! What ever that word means!!! |

Hey, that's a French word meaning "side bags/cases on any kind of two-wheeled vehicle..." Or at least I think so. Same term on a pushbike. Oh, and it's "panniers"...you're welcome! --Doc |

Guys, when I said back road riding, I meant small paved roads. They look something like what you might imagine an English or Irish farm lane- except they can go very steep in places. Ideal 2nd gear speed and sometimes the Uly has to dip down to 2500 to 3000 rpm range, BUZZ CITY in the country. I think I will do the XB9 primary swap. Nothing like spending more of my own money to fix an issue that should not be an issue! |

If you're dipping down to 2500-3000 in 2nd, you just aren't going fast enough. The problem is YOUR's. I never had a problem. Thousands of others don't. You can't expect the company to fix a problem the majority aren't having. It's your problem, spend your money to fix it and make it the bike that's better for you. I'm pretty sure that the rest of us aren't riding the specific roads YOU are riding. Pretty sure that mine was perfect for 99.9% of where I rode mine. |

Another one here fine with the stock gearing. If anything, I would like taller gearing for the slab. |

I'M SURE ON YOUR WIDE OPEN WIMP ROADS, ALL IS WELL! LOL - If you were to ride on anything challenging - it may serve you well to slow down in places. Otherwise, it's a long way down the mountain. No chicken strips on my back tire! |

You need to ride with Barker and me. I don't think we lack for "challenging" roads. You ought to see us on dirty roads. |

Conchop- Before you go to the 9 primary, see threads on Treadmark's "square idle" ECM update. Several have said this dramatically improves the low-RPM behavior. |
