I have a 06 XB12X with 25,000 miles on it. A while back I wired in a Aerostich voltage meter to the bike. The bike normally runs at about 13.8 volts. Sits at about 12.4. Today when I went to go home for lunch the bike was riding at 11.4. RPM would not bring the volts up. then it would jump to 13.8 down to 12.4 and then hold for a while at 11.4. When I run my fog lamps the voltage will drop to 12.8 but RPM will bring it up a little. RPM today was not bringing it up. So the question is, is my Voltage regulator going bad? If so what is the part number and how much do they cost? Battery terminals are tight. Checked that already. Thanks for any help. |

Sounds like the VR. Usually when the stator is going bad, RPMs will bring the voltage up. If the VR is bad, RPMs will have sporadic impact on voltage output. Then again, both could be bad. |

Thanks FB. I just ordered a VR from Al at American Sportbike. Hopefully I will get it before the weekend. Supposed to be 70. |

Make sure you give the '77 connector a prod to make sure you don't have an intermittent connection there - the way mine failed was very similar to what you describe. Can't hurt to look. |

Definitely check the 77 connector; more info here: http://docs.google.com/view?docid=d4rbxwr_20dq5khf The latest release voltage regulator supposedly comes with a new type plug and replacement plug for the bike's wiring harness which will hopefully cure the problem once and for all. |

I had the same problem a month or so after my v/r was replaced on a road trip under warranty. It turned out to be a bad connection on the dreaded 77 connector. I disassembled it, cleaned and tightened everything and haven't had a problem. I am running a Kisan Chargeguard to monitor Voltage. Makes me think my 77 connector may have been the original problem. |

Just an update. I did check the 77 connector. Looked fine. No signs of arching or melting. Got the new voltage regulator in today. Installed and it is back to 13.9 volts while running. Fixed. My hard wired volt meter is at the following: http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/5-Function-Dig ital-Meter-p-16951.html It gave me the heads up to order the part prior to it killing my charging system. Cheap insurance from being stranded. |
