I have the side cases for my Uly. Now looking for a top case and bracket. Any other options that will work with the Buell side brackets other than the Buell top case and bracket? Thanks | ||

Ok , here is my idea. I do not like the look of any rear rack but I like to throw on a topcase occasionally. I just think the Uly looks much better when the topcase is off without that big ole hunk of steel hanging back there. So my solution is to remove the rack , fit a Givi E450 Monolock case to the tripletail, yes the triple tail. The Givi Monolock selection of topcases come with a universal adapter plate that can be used in ALOT of configurations. I didn't have a ton of time but here are some mock ups I did tonite. The Givi can be equipped with a backrest so you don't loose that functionality of the triple tail. Also , by flipping it over , you can mount the case in a solo position, providing a rider backrest. I've done lot of installs with these cases and have had great luck. Basically fit the plate, Drill 4 holes throught the tail, run the supplied allen bolts through , snap the cover on the plate and then install you topcase. done. RACK REMOVED  CASE ON REAR VIEW  CASE ON SIDE VIEW  PLATE DONE  This may not work for everyone , its just my solution to be able to take the case off and still have a nice looking tail section that is still functional as a luggage rack even when the case is not on. | ||

Says 11.5 ponds on the triple tail... I grabbed on and put WAY more than 50 pounds of pressure on it and it didn't budge... | ||

Yes its the wifes ride- It's actually a Dupont Illusion color. It is called illusion pink , it depends on lighting , it can go from pink to purple depending on lighting...  | ||

Part of the elegance of the factory set-up is how it transfers load to the proper structural points. It is essential to limit the length of the top box rack (the factory has taken it to the max that still allows proper loading of the bike) and the way it transfers load. NEVER run without ALL brackets in place. It's okay, as a couple of the engineers do, to run top box only, but all the rack structure MUST be in place. The grab handle is not set up to support the weight.  | ||

Court , I hate to say it (because I rarely disagree with your posts) but.... I disagree , The X does not have the brackets from the factory, only the triple tail and the X without any additional brackets still has a 11 pound weight limit. I rarely put anything heavy in the topcase , I like to keep the center of gravity low on the bike , so heaviest items go in side cases and only the light stuff in the top. Again , as I stated this mod may not be for everyone , I just like the ability to not have the rack visible and still be able to throw a top case on when needed. The case weighs maybe 2 pounds and a few shirts and some spare gloves and power bars maybe add 3 pounds or so... Well below the stated limit. If the X had the brackets I'd agree but it doesn't. Unless I am missing something?  | ||

I think what Court is saying is: if you run a top case, make sure the bracketry is set up like the stock bracketry if you are going to carry topcase-levels of weight. The side brackets support the tail section and keep it from becoming a 'luggage diving board' with the top box hanging way out there. Put a quarter on a butter knife and flip it across the room - boooiinng. There's the idea. IF you want to use the triple tail as your mounting point...do not exceed the weight rating of the triple tail. The X and XT triple tails are rated for the same amount. An X with bags has the same topcase rating as an XT. I, apparently like many factory folks, go "pizza delivery" most times with only the top box on my X...but I always have the sidecase bracketry installed because they're structural for the topcase support. | ||

I have a top case and bracket I'd be willing to part with. I never use the top case. I don't think it's been used more than a couple of times. My wife never rides with me, so if I travel, I use a big dry bag on the rear seat. No hard bags needed. Only use the top case mount to hold my helmet at stops. | ||

ALL brackets must be in place. Even though they are individual pieces they distribute the load to the members with the proper load bearing capacity. It's fine to run with any configuration of mounted bags as long as the bracketry is in place. I load mine the same weigh (pun intended) and not so much for weight as for CG. I guess as a pilot I'm really sensitive to CG. My, and this is simply my personal take, method is that things that have much weight, in my case school books, go in the side cases. The top case is reserved for a bike cover, camera gear, etc. I am having Pelican fab an insert to allow me to "nest" a collection of camera bodies and lens but I'll weight them first. A couple of the engineers at the factory are running the top case to and from work, with all brackets in place, and have never reported a problem. Court | ||

Court- WAYYY off topic, and apologies for the hijack, but I would LOVE to know which, and how many of the Buell engineers ride a Uly. If anonymity is a concern, I fully understand if you say nothing. I just think its cool as he** that people purchase and ride things they design. Hijack done. | ||

I'll have to check on the number . . . but I think it's super cool that Abe Askenazi, arguably one of the smartest and nicest folks, co-worker, husbands, fathers and American imports, I have EVER met . . . liked it so much that he spent his own money and bought one the moment they came out. Abe, who it took us years go get off his Ducati, rides well and led the Team if Tests & Analysis Elves who poured over the details of the Ulysses in development. I might add that the Ulysses had changed the way Erik Buell rides too. Erik scoffed at the offer of money (LOTS AND LOTS . . like enough to buy a house) money for the 100,000th Buell, jumped on it and wheelied down the road toward the farm. Last summer young kidlet took Erik's bike to Montana for a trip leaving Erik an S2 to ride . . . Erik was a frickin' mess till Johnny got home. FUNNY SIDEBAR: Johnny returned with the Uly covered in mud, bugs and so forth. The SCU/Supermom remanded him "go clean off Erik's bike" . . . Erik interceded and told him . . "don't touch it, that's the way a Ulysses is SUPPOSED to look". I have some really sentimental pictures of Erik headed out the drive heading to the office on a rainy day. I've always subscribed to not posting personal pics but I may break my own rule. It's an amazing motorcycle.
