Thanks for the information. It seems like the older models got better mileage. I wonder if the XT's lower mileage is is due to the side bags?

'06 X with side bags, 52l topcase, Palmer brackets, large windscreen, 40-42mpg. Same setup except Parabellum Large Windscreen and no Palmer brackets, 36-38mpg with only 105mph top speed!

I don't think so. My '06 Uly with bags regularly gave me 47-50 MPG, while my '08 XT gives me 41-44 MPG. I think it's the new fuel injection that makes the difference. The part I don't understand is that the '08 doesn't run any better, or make any more power. It just uses more gas.

'08X
Best was 56 mpg, loaded with gear for 2 months on road and while flogging up and down 10,000 foot passes in Colorado. Subsequently found mileage dropped drastically the lower the elevation, to high 30's/low 40's at sea level, then went back up into the 50's when I hit the mountains.
. . . . don't ask me

Got 62 mpg once on a '07X with about 8,000 miles on it. Has dropped since, but I'm probably riding faster.

08 XT 42-44, with or without luggage, doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Winter blend E10 fuel, 6k miles. I'm hoping/expecting another 10% on summer blend because that is what I have seen on everything else in the past. I bought the bike in December, so it hasn't seen summer fuel with me at the throttle yet.

Oct 07 built - 08 X model. About 45mpg - sometimes 42 & sometimes 48 depending on Temp, elevation, geography, speed, wind etc. Always have side bags on - sometimes top case. Sometimes cruising @ 65, sometimes 85.

Everybody loves good gas mileage because it's cheaper to operate and filling up is just a pain in the arse. Nobody loves helping oil companies make record profits quarter after quarter. With all that in mind you'd think that Buell would be trying for better gas mileage instead of worse. The first year model of the ULY, the 06', is by far the most fuel efficient and that is because the 08' update is a more complicated engine with more bearings and longer oil flows to keep the new gizmos cool and lubed. Henry Ford needs to speak from the grave to the Buell engineers. When Ford was engineering the Model A car he wanted simplicity, and longevity. Henry looked at the Zenith carburetor and said "Okay, but there are too many bolts holding it together". Hicks told Zenith and Zenith reduced the bolts from 14 to 2. Still too many, he said. The Model A carburetor was introduced with but a single bolt.

I remember being all fired up about demoing the 08' when it first came out. Rode it out at Rapid City, SD a couple of times during Sturgis week. Totally disappointed with off idle throttle response. Told the demo crew that my 06' ULY seemed way more powerful when leaving a stop sign. They made excuses about a new throttle body cam and ECM coding because of EPA constraints. Anyway, it sure killed my lust for the "New and improved" ULY. They should of just concentrated on what 06' riders were bit.ching about and that was engine heat, wind buffeting, rusty mufflers, steering lock, pinging and seat height and of course the low speed lurching and chugging. They took care of the TPS, steering lock, seat height(for those that need it), and pinging. Did nothing about wind buffeting and engine heat and pretty much left those to us except for the plastic heat deflectors which help if you seal them on your own. The throttle body cam IMHO was not necessary and who ever asked for it in the first place?? Lower 1st gear or 6 speeds would of helped the lurching and chugging problem and made everyone very happy and probably sold many more bikes but that wasn't their priority. Gas mileage went down the crapper and they struggled to update the ECM way after the fact. As for the rusty muffler, they could of just made it out of SS like other manufacturers are doing (Certainly would be cheaper than replacing countless units under warranty like they did mine). Don't get me wrong, I love my ULY but it could always be better. Anyway this little missive should get things started.

I'm only at about 3K on an '09, and my MPG has gone up and down again. It was at it's worst during break in (of course). It got better over time and was seeing high 40's to 50 for a spell. Now it seems to have dropped again. My last fill up saw 33.24 MPG and though I haven't filled up again, my fuell light just went on again today at 120 miles. I'm not sure what the reason is for this drop, as my riding hasn't changed since I bought it. I do ride 2 up frequently (95 lb, 4'-11' wife)and I ride with Touratech Zega panniers. I would consider these two factors alone as a reason for a drop in mileage, but these were my riding conditions when I was getting mileage in the high 40's. I'm a bit clueless as to what's going on.

2008 XT. Have about 4k miles. Only getting about 35ish MPG. I think that's kinda low considering most of those miles are highway miles.

I get 165 miles before my low fuel light comes on and much of the time is spend in the 3000 - 5000 RPM band. This is pretty consistent whether I am solo or 2-up, irrespective of touring, commuting or just hooning around.
This appears to be the most economical part of the rev range, probably because that's where peak torque is made.

Oh, by the way, mine is an '06 model Uly with standard can, '07 airbox and a K&N filter.
Mind you, it did the same gas mileage with the '06 airbox and standard filter! It's amazing!!!

Never have gotten much above 35 and it didn't matter if it was with bags or 2-up got the same either way which is perplexing. I do wish it got better mileage but then it wouldn't be pegged coming out of corners then and I can't have that.
