Finally purchased (after looking everywhere) my copy of the documentary Long Way Round yesterday. Wife and I watched the first 4 hours last night and can't wait to watch the last 4 hours tonite. Truthfully the movie is WAY beyond my expectations. I know I know , they didn't ride the right bikes but so far its an AWESOME movie. There is no question our Ulysses's would make that journey.... I've got better news there is a second part to that called: Long Way Down From London to Cape Town. I have both of them. still haven't had the patience to sit down and watch them. | ||

I have both Long Way Round and Long Way Down on DVD. They are both awesome. Long Way Round is slightly better IMO. The part of Long Way Down was slightly boring when Ewan's wife joined them. I watch them both every 6 months or so and still enjoy them. | ||

I haven't watched the vids, but I did read the book that accompanied Long Way Round. I enjoyed it, though I though Ewan and Charlie did spend an awful lot of time whining about being homesick and being shocked that there are places in the world where people carry guns. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. | ||

Well I thought that until I saw the BMW rear sub-frames keep breaking throughout the journey, and wondered if KTM knew something about their own bike that they didn't want exposed like the weak frames did on the beemers.... But the scene with Charlie ripping the KTM posters off his wall was classic..  BTW You can down load the whole thing online (legally) for 19 bucks from the official site which is what I did. It is ten episodes and each is about 4 meg but it is a fast download. I've seen both series multiple times and every time I watch it, it makes me want to quit work and blow all my money (or lack thereof) traveling around the world on my bike. Even my wife got really into watching it (she wasn't much for my 'quit work and ride motorcycles' idea though). It'd be cool to see a Uly do it but hey, bikes are bikes..they're all cool  | ||

going for a putt this year, shop closes 10/1 and not back to work until 2/1... so 4 months to put and see the out of the way places and the off pavement stuff that calls to me. As we get closer, I will be rattling the Big Bad and Dirty for recommended destinations. | ||

I never understood why the used such big hulking bikes for the trip. I think it was classic when Claudio, the camera man, experienced a failure on his BMW and ended up on a cheap Russian POS and had no issues. LOL!  If you're in the rough stuff, light weight is the way to go. I think a KLR650, XR650, F650 would have been the better choice. But I guess BMW makes more coin selling the big elephant bikes. | ||

Okay - Here's even better news for you Long Way fans... Long Way Up is in the planning stages. Ewan and Charlie travel from Ushuaia to Los Angeles. Don't know why they picked that destination but there ya go. For me, Long Way Round was the better trip - Long Way Down was too rushed, the support crew became too much a part of the story and the guys didn't seem as independent as they were in Round. Also, Down throttled back too much on Claudio's clutziness. But ultimately, I have the greatest respect for those folks who have made these trips without the giant support crew and all the international "fixers". Yes, the Uly would make it just fine. It's probably more than 100lbs lighter than the GS Adventure, and as long as the support team had plenty of shifters, mirrors, and such to replace the ones that broke off when it fell over, it would be fine. | ||

Touratech makes a rear brake that won't break when dropped. I'm surprised they haven't extended that to the shifter. Wayne | ||

Honestly, I don't think it would make it. It's a tire & wheel size thing. The deep mud, gravel, potholes, gravely, muddy riverbeds - you'd be carrying your Uly (or repairing it)more than riding it. You'd also better have an f'n big auxiliary fuel cell. | ||

I have to say I'm not impressed with them as people or anything about they're trip. First, they had a staff of 5 or more people doing all the paper work, calling embassies,prepping the bikes and getting them coffee. Second, they are nearly in tears when ktm backs out of the deal. I mean come on.. you know they could just pay cash for what ever bike they want. How many people go around the world all alone, unsupported. having to deal with Everything them selves. Maybe im jealous, but they just seem like silver spoon sponsorship boys to me. | ||

And that is what it is... entertainment. Even if you could afford to buy every bike made wouldn't you still be ok with a company giving you a bike to ride? Others have done it just to push themselves and their machines. These guys did it for entertainment to sell books, DVD's, T-Shirts, etc. I am too jealous of them but only because I wish I could get paid to try it. We would all gladly accept the sponsorships. I am looking forward to the next one. The wife and I both really enjoyed the first 2. | ||

Liked LWD, loved LWR but Mondo Enduro is regular classic of travel on a motorcycle. I like the stories of frames breaking, electrical gremlins .... adds reality to the story. Mondo enduro is full of it. LWR/LWD great adventures. Chas | ||

I have seen both series. Very enjoyable. There is still a flick that I have not seen where Charlie rides the Paris/Dakar. Trying to find that one. I spent a lot of years riding in the dirt and it was fun to see Ewan struggle with mud, sand, etc. I heard a rumor on the Adventure Riders forum that they are planning a third series called Long Way Up... from Argentina to Alaska, through California. | ||

What I found a bit stunning on LWD was the lone fellow on a bicycle who was traveling the same route but from the other direction (if I recall correctly). They had a full support crew and that guy was carrying everything he had on a peddle bike. | ||

I really enjoyed Ewan's movies (+1 on the whining), but "Dust To Glory" made me clench my teeth, hold a blankie to my chin, and curl into the fetal position for two straight hours. In a good way. The long-term tours are fantastic and difficult and definitely more culturally interesting, but those Baja competitors are real men. | ||

Spoiler warning if you've not seen it. LWR: One of the best films I've seen up to date. You just can't script this stuff: The wacky humor of Charlie, an AK 47 wielding ex-Soviet-Navy house host, the producer gagging on testicle soup. I was also touched by the irony of the Mongolians; having so little, how they were so generous (You also can't script the expression one made after taking a drink of Johnny Walker). Another memorable point of irony: Ewan almost meeting his end at the hands of teenage driver in the US after having survived river crossings in Russia and the Road of Bones, etc, etc. Great documentary. |
