For me, I'd keep the bike and put in line with my other three project bikes. I can't seem to let go of motorcycles. Having an in-house parts source would be far too tempting - easily worth $1100-$1400 to me. But don't let my affliction get you too.

You could also keep it. Fix it with a new front end and have a cheap second Uly for your son! I've seen the damage in the pics you posted and I'd be willing to bet it's not really all that bad as long as the frame isn't cracked up there near the neck bearings.

I agree, put an 08 front end set up on it and then sell it for a profit and put that in the new bike account. Of course, take pictures and educate us all! It's what your good at! |

If I could get an 08' mildly demolished Uly for around $1200 - Id buy it. You're a pioneer Uly guy - not wondering if you'll like this beast & keep it for another 5 years. This would tilt towards making sense to buy it. Domestic tranquility issues notwithstanding of "another junked bike". Question: How many times did you have a canceled, delayed trip due to part availability ? (I was stuck in 5th gear for 2 weeks waiting for a $3 pawl spring - vacation over) Are you willing to trade the inconvenience of not having old 414's(?) spare parts for the inconvenience of having it take up space and $... then Either decision is the right one, for different reasons. But I'm a terminal packrat ! |

Just for your information, here are a few photos of some of the "junker bikes" that clutter up our back yard...
1. This Honda & Yamaha will probably never see use again...
2. This is the frame of an '84 Yamaha RZ-350, probably the only legitimate "project bike." I have just about the whole bike...in boxes. Anyone interested?
3. This Allstate 250 thumper was reputedly "...a great hillclimber..." according to its former owner.
4. Should the Uly be added to this collection?
5. Oh yeah, throw in a few junk bicycles...
But I've Made My Decision!!!...
I'm gonna keep the Uly. The temptation of having a nearly-complete "parts bike" for my favorite bike of all time is just too tempting. I'll probably completely disassemble it over the next year or so (anatomy lesson). Might be interested in selling the odd part.
Thanks to all who contributed to this discussion. You brought up many points which I hadn't considered.
BTW, Mrs. Greg is comfortable with keeping the bike. She actually is urging me to see what it would take to get it back on the street. The condition of the frame will determine that, I suspect. For myself, I'm leaning towards disassembly, as I indicated. We'll see...

I have put 20,000 miles on my Uly since I bought back from the Insurance company. At the price you were given the parts are worth more and if you decide to rebuild from any of the four sons, they are very fixable. |

That Allstate 250 is, I believe a Benelli. I had a '67(?) Wards Riverside 250 which looked like that (but not so rusted), and it was a Benelli. I gave the bike to my best friend, back in '72 while he was going to school on the G.I.Bill. He put a Triumph gas tank and a solo seat on it, and it was a pretty neat little runner. He and his wife were living in a Studio apartment on the third floor, and we had a hell of a time getting the bike up the three flights of stairs. He dismantled it, painted and assembled it in the apartment. Then, instead of trying to get the bike down the stairs, we got a few friends and some rope and lowered it from the balcony.
Last seen, that bike was in Lafayette, LA in 1974.
Oh, I'm glad you've decided to keep your first Uly. I don't think you'll regret it. |

I'm laughing my butt off...those photos are priceless. What a dream to have a bunch of rotting bikes around the property! Mine sit out in front of the house as if they'll start right up and ride away tomorrow (which they won't). It's a big fraud. |
