This was a stock Neon. I was running about 70mph in 6th gear, and the Neon came up behind me riding my tail. I kicked it down to 5th, and pinned it only to have the engine sound like a clothes dryer with marbles in it. The bike wouldn't accelerate and the Neon moved over to the slow lane and handed my butt to me. Pulling away doing a blistering 80 or 85mph. The GS was a gonner after that. Then came the FJR. It had no such problems. Even the BMW M3 that challenged me suffered a painful defeat when I sucked the paint off of him from 90 to 145mph when I rolled out of it.  | ||

Yes...that has something to do with it too. Rode a friends GS. Same year, stock bike. I was hard to keep the front end down in the first three gears and it went like a bat outta hell. He rode my GS and when we traded back he said, "That thing is a piece of $hit!". LOL! | ||

My fracture was actually the distal end of the radius, rather than the wrist (although some of the wrist bones needed to be realigned). They installed a plate; butting it up to my previous radius plate (!). Last night I experienced a fair bit of, um, discomfort... I think I'm through the worst. Probably will have my son test-ride #564 on Saturday. Don't know if I'll have repair estimate by then, but---as I mentioned---I intend to buy #564 one way or t'other. Don't want this to devolve into a GS discussion, but on my test-ride, I found that GS to be: 1. Too loud (it had a blooey-pipe). Fixable 2. Suspension way too harsh for my 155 lb. Fixable, maybe. 3. TOO DAMN BIG! Not fixable. Climbing back on Ulysses was like my favorite comfy armchair. I may start a new thread soon ("Dr. Greg's New Bike") when we test-ride/take delivery on #564. Although I won't be riding for a while, I can certainly do a little wrenching/farkling on the new bike. --Doc | ||

Congrats on your recovery! (And I LOVED the Bimmer pic!). Your enthusiasm is infectious, and (as someone else said) you are a walking endorsement of proper riding gear. Now I'm dying to go riding, but it's 12° here with six inches of snow. I look forward to further updates! | ||

I'm dying for a ride too. It's going to be near 70 here on Friday...but raining! ARRRRRGH!! But, one week from Saturday I'll be lapping Jennings GP in sunny Florida on my 600. Wheeeee!! Sadly, it's the last track day of 2008 for me. No more until March. | ||

I went riding yesterday:  Had to turn around a couple miles further, my lack of off road experience had me feeling a little uncomfortable when the Syncs started sliding around... Man I love this bike, and riding this time of year. No pinging, nice dense air, plugged in and toasty.  | ||

DR G- I am a RN in the OR and I was involved with a distal radius today as well ... be thankful you weren't in this ladies shape... and I'll leave it at that .... one of four breaks overall How long do they want you in a splint??? You a righty or a lefty??? Breaking the left I figure is probably better than the right all and all ... throttle wrist would get more strain over time... wish I hadn't broke mine in second grade... still plagues me on longer rides with heavy throttle work... anyway.... speedy recovery.... Like a top-end job?? I was thinkin' more like the 10K service... 1st order of business: install blue headers! Yeah, they're not scratched too bad...of course it means rotating the engine. Hell I can do that in 15 minutes! How long do they want you in a splint??? Dunno yet; see doc on 12/29, so that long at least. You a righty or a lefty??? Righty. 1. End of "Dr. Greg's Shakedown Cruise" Time to put this thread to bed. To that end, here's a photo of Doc and Mrs. Greg at the Grand Canyon (North Rim, of course) in 2007:  I'm wearing an autographed Mert Lawwill T-shirt, BTW... ...glad to see that Mrs. Greg has gone from Deadbeat to Heroine... Yes, indeed. What a woman.  ... I went in to the office today and figured and posted final grades for my mechanisms and robotics courses. It was surprisingly fatiguing...especially with one finger. However, generally I'm feeling much better; very encouraging. Finally sleeping well. Then tomorrow morning (0930 Saturday) it's off to the School of Engineering Commencement. And after that... The next bike...maybe Second son and I are planning to go to dealer where he'll test-ride #564. Maybe they'll have a repair estimate on #44 and I can begin negotiating with insurance company.. Since second son has never ridden anything remotely like a Ulysses, I'm going to print a list of things for him to check out (and tape it on the airbox cover), like: (a) Engine hesitation/flat spots (b) Front brake pulsation (c) ??? What else can you guys suggest? Ol' #44 was trouble-free regarding common Uly problems, so I'm kinda at a loss as to what to have him look for. My big problems (clutch needle bearing, spark plug blowout) won't show up at 10,000 miles on a test-ride. Only front brake, and I'll list that. I'm gettin' excited about that Barricade Orange '06!   | ||

Great way to finish...I'm VERY tempted to start a new thread in honor of our S.O.'s who either put up with these two-wheel obsessions of ours, or embrace them wholeheartedly, or have one of their own - ideally with the Buell in the shot. Or a thread with photos of those of us who have posed in the same way in front of the Grand Canyon... Maybe I'll do that...any in'erest?    | ||

Doc, what a trooper you are. I have been offline for a bit and just spent the last hour reading your entire story. Amazing you survived and are in such good spirits! You are quite the inspiration to all who have fallen and had issues getting back in the saddle. Well done! Would enjoy visiting and possibly doing the ride again with you this summer if you have an interest. Maximum and I are overdue for a road trip from Colorado. Well, well, well....I just got a rather interesting email from someone I haven't talk to in over a year. "Hi Joel, I hit a deer on my 06 Uly and I'm looking for another 06 Uly. No offense, but I want to avoid your old bike. Do you recall its S/N? Thanks! --greg" Not so funny and really funny stuff in such a short email. I just turned my 1 year anniversary on the Multi on 12/04 too. Anyway Dr. Greg, I couldn't find my serial number anywhere. I'm pretty sure I purged all paperwork that was Buell related to try to erase the memories. I can tell you it wasn't the one you are looking at. It was a 4 digit low number like 1014 or 1264. Something in that range as those numbers stick in my mind. It might be posted in an old pic on here somewhere. I have to admit I'm surprised you are sticking with the '06. I know you had pretty few problems with yours, but I would think the common problems would steer you to a newer one. The '06 my brother picked up last year hasn't been exactly trouble free, but at least I could diagnose every single problem over the phone for him. Good luck with your next ride and heal fast. | ||

I know you had pretty few problems with yours, but I would think the common problems would steer you to a newer one. Yeah, I understand. All I can say is that I liked my '06 so much that I'm hoping to recapture the experience. Perhaps in vain, but I hope not. Time will tell... You know, you like like an entirely different person with that beard. My tradition is to start the beard on September 8 (my birthday) and let it grow w/o trimming till March 8 (my half-birthday). When I shave it off I hear "you look so much younger...", sounds better the older I get! Plus of course it's great insulation. The commute on March 9 is always a rough one. --Doc |
