I went back and sat on the bike again and have a few more questions:
1) it is a 2009 and the salesman mentioned the low seat height option. How much does it lower the 2009 bike?

2) What would a good OTD price be? MSRP is 12995.00 How much wiggle room do they have? Could I knock a grand of considering the economy?

3) The salesman will not let me test ride a Buell. They do have a used 2006 in stock he is willing to let me ride. Is that common? He mentioned a buy, take a 30 minute ride and tear up the contract if I do not like the bike.

thanks for your feedback.

Tell him that you wouldn't even think about buying a bike you didn't ride and that in this economy any other dealer would be more than happy to give you a test ride.

The salesman doesn't want to sell a Buell. Find another shop, or at the very least another sales person. Until I rode a Uly, I could look at other bikes, but after about 3 minutes of test riding, I was sold.

1, The low seat is half an inch lower at best. It isn't much lower than the 07 and newer seat.

2, MSRP on the 09 XB12X is $11,495, the XB12XT is $12,995. The XT is lower, has a bigger windshield, and standard bags. All that can be added to the X as accessories.

3, I bought both of my Buells without a test ride, hell I bought the second one sight unseen, and I love every second of it.

Althought, the fact he won't let you ride it means you should go else where. The 06 is quite different from the 09, you might not like the 06 and it would leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Find another sales person, at another dealership if needed. You are in Texas? When I was there (just visiting, not born there) it seamed like another country. Handshake or just a man's word seamed to mean something there. My thought is a signed contract in that land would mean it's a done deal.
My salesman practically begged me to ride the 08. I felt like he would buy me dinner just to get me on it. Find a salesperson that will at least pretend to like you. Sounds like you have a girlfriend that makes you go through her divorce attorney to get anything from her.

He's too used to selling HD's and believes he has a captive market. I've been away from Buells for a while, are there still a lot of dealers that behave this way?

If you want to test ride one, Buell provides that all over the country.Go to Buell's web site and see when one will be in driving distance to you. Don't expect the dealer to allow miles to be put on new bikes by anyone that claims to want to by it. Would you buy a new motorcycle with 500 miles on it for the same price as one with the factory 15?
Buell does not provide demo bikes to dealers.

I walked into the dealership, (I was on my way back from a job), asked if I could demo the 08 XT. I didn't even have any gear. He got me a jacket and helmet, handed me the key, and away I went. 10 minutes later, I came back and said "I'll be back in the morning with the money". This dealership is in Bay City Michigan, (GreatLakes HD). They have ALL my business now. They even came down from the MSRP. Thats the kind of shop you just don't find.

I bought mine with 115 miles on it due to 2 1/2 years of random test rides.... 6000 miles later no troubles but that permanent smile issue (mine not the Uly's).... I understood that I wanted to test ride before signing and that others would too.... The demo truck is a awesome idea and I am looking forward to it coming near me so I can ride all our models in one day... but it comes near me maybe 2-3 times a year and thats mainly because I live in the south where warm weather rules....

good luck with your purchase ... I agree with others, get a new salesman or shop and test ride.... money off 2009's might be hard being that many dealers haven't even received any 09 Uly's yet...

cheers-pete

It should be easy to find a Buell test ride. If you have a problem, drop me a line and we'll find a demo event, fellow Buell owner or dealer in the area.

Don't get too hung up. Study and learn more, it's a really fun bike.

I have a variety of seats for the Uly but haven;t tried them with the weather like it is. I like the tall for New York City traffic as I can see over about anything in front of me.

I do not want the used 2006 model they have on the floor.

He wasn't sure how low the "low seat" would drop the 2009 XB12XT they have on the floor. Do any of you know?

I can understand why they would be hesitant to let people ride their Bikes if Buell doesn't provide a test model for them. I am not sure how all that works but know that the mileage added to the bikes ODO through test rides must cause some concern by future customers and can be used as a bargaining point to lower the cost of a "new" bike that has been ridden a lot (I know I would).

If anyone can find where the Buell Demo truck will be at (I can't seem to find it on their website!) let me know.

thanks!

Usually listened under events on the right hand side of the buell homepage....

only one listed right now is in CA..... that is unusual.... but with the Motorcycle shows touring the nation I am guessing the touring staff is attending the shows...

The X and XT have the same stock seat, so the low seat lowers each one the same amount. The difference between X and XT is suspension-related.

I don't know that I'd immediately storm off and find another dealer, but I would hold out to get a test ride. If they're worried about squirrels, ask for an *escorted* test ride. It may be as fun as riding the county fair ferris wheel with a 3 year old...but at least you can sample the ergos and get a feel for what the bike can do if you ask it to.

I'd be surprised if they move much off MSRP - as noted above, many dealers have yet to receive any '09 Ulys. All we have is one '08 X, and one '09 XT. Also remember - the bad economy affects both sides of the bargaining table. Not that society trains us to care, but the dealer has to pay rent, utilities, and salaries too. It's tough out there for everyone.

A good price is one that everyone can sleep with...
The salesman's job is to sell the goods or services at a competitive price; buyer beware.
A fair deal, on a '09 Uly for me, would be out the door price equal to M.S.R.P. or less.

Schwartzkm - I have an 08 X I'd let you test ride - but it's not for sale. Unfortunatly you live in Texas & I in Wa state where we got a foot of snow & waiting for the next wave in form of ice storm. Even the new Distanzias on her wont help in this stuff. Surely (as Court suggested) there is a way to demo the bike - even through unofficial back channels. I test rode an 06 since they had no 08's available. Make sure, whatever year model you test, suspension is set up for your weight. Good luck. PS - you'll love the ride - like a whole nuther 2 wheel experience.

The low seat was for 2006. It will fit on a 2009 but the reach to the ground is not better, maybe worse than the '07 and newer seat. Here is a review I did of all three factory seats available for the Uly from a short legged point of view.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/233920.html?1161390464

I no longer have the original '06 seat my bike had. I have the low and the '07 seat, which is still the same for '09 from what I can tell. The '07 is the most comfortable, but when I want to get aggressive the '06 low slides better.

You went to those idiots in Allen didn't you?
Go over to Corinth, if they won't let you
ride contact me and "MAYBE" I'll let you
ride my '08. Maybe!

Opps, I guess you have been to Corinth.
They are the ones with the '06 with
the ugly silver pipe wrap!

Hey, used 06's are the best! J/K; buy what you want. Re test-ride: they should toss you the keys and say "have fun."

Good luck.

He offered you a ride on a 2006....Stop whining and ride the 2006 ..... the 2009 is better .... sooooo if you like the 2006 ..... you'll love the 2009 .... in reality both bikes should "test ride" about the same. I test rode a 2006 that had been crashed and had some bent parts including mis-aligned foot pegs .... I had a great test ride and ordered a 2007 after I got off.

My own dealer urged me to take a test ride; he insisted I take an EXTENSIVE ride. I was gone for 40 minutes and put over 20 miles on the bike in varied conditions. I had been "just looking," and from that test ride I became "just buying."

There may be other explanations for your dealer not giving test rides--insurance or whatever--but they can hardly expect to sell an expensive machine to someone without a test ride.

So I side with a lot of folks here: I'd find another dealer.

Schwartzkm - your experience so far is totally different from mine. Dallas and Grand Prairie both were practically begging me to take test rides. I even told the guy at Longhorn that I wasn't a "today buyer" and his response was, "So?" Corinth was a little more cautious, making me set up an appointment, but I still only signed a waiver and didn't have to buy up front.

choyashi: Yes, I went to the "idiots" in Allen. My friend purchased his RK from Corinth and they are much easier to deal with, ihho. I am not a "today" buyer but the Allen folks do not know that.

After reading the posts here and adv rider, the 06 would seem to make a great test ride to determine whether or not I would like the bike. It's 26 here today so I think I might put it off till I get back from the holidays.

thanks for all the responses.

I purchased a 2009 XB12XT from Pensacola HD for a few dollars over 13K out the door on December 4th. Broke down to 12k even for the bike, plus tax, t&l. No test ride was offered, but didn't ask. Very happy with bike. Standard seat height.

When I ordered my 2009 12X I asked the dealer for a test ride. He told me I couldn't test ride because he didn't have a bike in stock for me to test ride. Then he remembered he had Court's Uly in for service and told me I could flog that for a day or two as Court would never know the difference (just a joke that never happened) He did tell me that when the bike came in I could test ride it and if I didn't like it I wouldn't have to buy it. Needless to say...I have a brand spankin' new Uly X.

The dealer here rolled the bike off the floor and out the door for a test ride so fast it made my head spin. Made a deal on the 09 XT when I returned with it after an hour's ride.

...I hate selling a bike to someone who hasn't ridden it yet. I practically *make* folks take at least a short ride before sitting down to sign (licensed folks, that is).

That, and it lets me use the "they don't know the area very well, I'm gonna go with them to show them the route" excuse to get out and ride for a few minutes : )

I had a '05 City-X. I rode it in to the dealer the day I test rode the Uly. I was not doing a trade and was willing to just buy it. This was at Smoky Mountain HD in Maryville Tn.

It was the day I met Brad (Squids86129). He insisted on me taking a test ride before the purchase and with him on his own '05 City-X, he escorted me on a nice hot lap around the neighborhood. It was funny, the bike had 1 mile on it and I rode it to about 7.5 miles. Before doing the contract he said the bike has 7.5 miles on it, is that OK with you for a new purchase? I thought that was a silly thing to ask because I put those miles on it. Oh well I got my '06 Uly and haven't been more pleased with any motorcycle that I have ever owned.

This one I will have to disagree with:

"He's too used to selling HD's and believes he has a captive market. I've been away from Buells for a while, are there still a lot of dealers that behave this way?"

I would have to say this is the one thing that does help Buell being in HD dealerships.

Almost all Ricer shops do not allow test rides. Maybe it is due to the average age of the customers.

But in the midwest, you would be hard pressed to find an HD dealership that would turn down the request for a test ride. In fact, most have a fleet with one of each model for test ride purposes/rentals.

The dealer that I purchased my 08 XT from suggested I test ride the X they had in their fleet, but I insisted on driving the XT that I was looking to purchase. I really wanted to feel the change in tires, and feel the difference in wind protection.

It was good to feel those items, it was bad that the bike only had single-digit mileage and was far from broke in. I was not initially impressed coming from a 12s with factory race kit.

Of course, it gave me all the things I was looking for and knew what things to expect once the engine was broke in.

The test drive was the reason I bought my 12s over a Yamaha, that I had no option to test drive. It is also what got me on my XT as well.

Demand the test drive, most HD dealers know that it sells bikes.

Good luck!

Previous mentioned price difference notwithstanding:

Compared to a new Uly, the XT:

Has the old triple clamps and smaller diameter shorter forks giving less stop to stop radius.

Its suspension is tuned more for tight cornering on roads, not off road generous.

It has lighter less impact-durable rims.

Has the taller windscreen

Has a Firebolt style front fender

Has less ground clearance and shorter seat height.

More street-centric touring tires on the XT
