The best thing about reading this story is to hear that you were having a beer as you typed. There's a sub-culture of BadWebbers here who have plowed through an animal, but you may take the prize as "the fastest". I'm SO glad to hear you're in okay shape and in good spirits. We all know how bad it could have been.

When I hit mine in February (ATGATT), I was just so ANGRY that it was THIS that was my crash. It made no sense! It wasn't a person driving or pulling out or not braking in time. It was a TOTAL FLUKE, like getting hit by an asteroid (sort of)! I'm still mad. But, also glad I came out okay. My ribs were really sore for a long time, and I wondered if they were cracked, but I could pretty much do things as normal around the house (except sit up out of bed...that was annoying). People who have broken ribs tell me that the pain is excruciating and that you're really debilitated. Oh, I went for cold Sapphire gin as I typed my crash report. It helped.

Deer. I used to think they were sort of cute. Now I hate them.

Fast healing and favorable insurance response!

Neil

I've noticed you let us know before the ADV folks.

Not gonna post there---it would degenerate into Uly-bashing or some such.

DR Greg-

whoa... the one finger typing, got me posting too soon yesterday... I guess congrats on the rebuild was a little too soon... or perhaps misplaced....

soooo, glad you sound okay...

I have been staring at the screen now for what seems like hours...(probably 5 minutes) trying to think of what to say.... nothing....

just shocked... damn that is just not right...

All I got is "speedy recovery, and may the IPA's ease the pain and assist you in a good way as you look back on it all...."

I continue to raise my pint to you SIR...

"HEAR HERE to DR GREG"

Cheers-pete

There's a sub-culture of BadWebbers here who have plowed through an animal,

Count me in. Hit mine in Oct. last year. She jumped out and I tagged her at 60. Scraped up gear, Broken foot in a few places (bike landed on it) and a totaled bike.

Dr_greg,
Hope you heal fast. By the way, how did your bike come with the option of warning you that something will happen later causing you to need a lift. Your check engine light comes on just long enough for you to call Mrs.Greg and leave her a message to come looking for you if she hasn't heard from you. Then you hit a deer. Smart bike.

Was she on her way already? Though a little banged up, glad you are still here.

Dr_Greg, maybe your ordeal is divine intervention leading you towards an 09 Uly! Glad your still kicking and will send a few prayers out for a real quick recovery.

The CRASH and its Aftermath

Let me rewind to "D-hour minus 180 milliseconds"... I had had an absolutely perfect day on the Uly, with only the one-time CEL to give me a little unease. After the last two months of nonsense, I had almost forgotten how enjoyable and rewarding a bike the Uly is. But Ulysses brought it back to me by doing what he does best: everything. Slow gnarly curves, faster sweepers, all-day comfort, smooth (IMHO) and quiet (mine is), any road surface---for me, this is the perfect bike.

The deer materialized in front of me. It was like a dream --- I dimly recall seeing the deer's shape and color, and calmly "thinking" that "I'm gonna hit it." Kinda slow-motion. That was followed by a jumble of sensations; no pain or anything.

Next thing I recall was lying in (I think) the oncoming lane: feet toward the centerline, head towards the shoulder. Perhaps six people were standing around me; one asked me my name, which I gave. Of course I wiggled fingers and toes---all fine.

From the conversation around me I heard the deer was dead. Just as well.

Those present had the good sense not to move me. I gave out Mrs. Greg's number and someone called her (she was already on her way in the pickup). Good thing I had the "early warning CEL light" option so I had called her to come rescue me even BEFORE the crash. Not even the GS has that option.

The EMTs took to the Grants ER, where I was cared for very well. The diagnosis was fractured left clavicle, possible left wrist fracture. CATscan was negative. They strapped me up---Mrs. Greg and 2nd son having picked up Uly from tow yard---and we drove home.

ATGATT, indeed.

Photos of Ulysses and some Gear

You saw the one pic of the bike; here are a few more...

NOTE: Garmin Zumo still works!

Both cases fractured too, but they protected the bike.

Rear rack bent...wasn't using top case...

My nice new header coating! Sob...

Pants...note deer guts...

Jacket...some deer guts here, too.

Helmet,,,more deer guts...

Note the large abrasions; the left side of my skull would be missing without the helmet (Shoei Hornet DS...will replace with same}.

From the steering head back, the bike is largely undamaged.

Tomorrow's installment: Monday visit to the crash site with Mrs. Greg.

Doc - I feel your pain. You have my sympathies, and my hopes for a fast recovery. The last five months have been looooong for me, hopefully you come through much faster - you've got a much shorter list than I did : )

Take care, listen to the docs, and enjoy those beers. Time for me to get another "winter drink" myself - hot cider with a lil' Cap'n in it : )

Be well, sir!

"NOTE: Garmin Zumo still works!"

Being another BadWeber in the healing mode -seven ribs, fractured scapula, and punctured lung two months ago - I hope you have a relatively quick recovery with minimum pain.

I quoted your remark about the ZUMO because if you had the "Track" mode on, you can download your track into your computer and see what the Zumo recorded about your wreck, like what happened after you hit the deer. I have a 2610 and did that. It was most interesting especially since I have ZERO recall of the crash.

Doc - You probably already know this in your heart...those stains ?? Uh...they maynot be guts. I had the same residue deposited upon me when I 'bagged' my deer last year with my KLR. In their final microsecond of consciousness it appears...they shit all over you !! Guess it's some sort of cosmic equity for them - insult to injury for us. Glad your wrist is not broken too. Have another ale to celebrate that. j

good grief... I cussed and bleeped till just now...very sorry to hear of the accident.

Quite familiar with deer here in WV and locally they pretty much appear out of nowhere. From November and for about 10 weeks, we drive pretty much scanning the roadsides as much as we look ahead. Typically when you see one, there will be three or five more nearby. I've had one encounter in a cage, kinda grim cleaning fuzz and blood off the vehicle....

Good luck with your healing; let me know if you need a wrench monkey to tend to the Uly... I've a few days of 'use or lose' left this year and would be happy to work for pale ales!

My God man! That totally sucks.

I too have been following this thread from the beginning. I was looking through your pictures up to the wreck wondering why this man hasn't written a book about his Uly adventures.

Glad to hear you will heal from this. I am going to drink a beer in your honor, as I think all BadWeB'rs should.

Let us know if you have that techno-info from the GPS. It was really interesting to hear about GOTJ's numbers and where speed changes happened.

And if Sekalilgai(Ken)could get out there to help you put it back together, he's one of those 'braney injuneer' types that you like, and a heck of a good guy.

The Zumo should work, mines had worse done to it!

+1 to downloading the info off it, at Buelltoberfest last year we looked it up and saw me doing 40mph right before the turn then suddenly stopping : )

Hey Doc, Been reading of your adventures. I too wrecked my Uly and broke my collar bone. Not much fun, but am healed and the bike is fixed. I'm finding I do more daytime riding and less night. The deer are still out, but they're easier to see. Get well!

Doc, was there traffic on the road when you crashed? From your description of the road, I'm wondering if you laid on the highway a while before anyone found you.

Hey Doc!

Glad to hear you're on the mend.

Maybe the deer stopped because he saw the oncoming motorcycle and thought: "That guy's got one headlight burnt out. I'd better stop here and tell him."

Get on the road soon, and keep us all posted.

No traffic. I had passed someone a few miles back; I think he was the first on the scene.

Just got back from Mrs. Greg driving me and Uly up to dealer and dropping him off for the repair estimate. And there's gonna be a wonderful story to tell about how it all ends up.

More story and pics later.

Dr_Greg in the deers defense, 600+lbs in the mid section at speed, unless that little bugger was super deer or something I doubt the crapping all over you was voluntary! At least now you know why all the people were standing over you!

Again glad your well and fast recovery to you.

Forgot to add one thing. In the ER one EMT said "good thing it wasn't an elk."

Elk are quite common in that area.

Don't even wanna THINK about that...

Did you give the jacket the smell test? That would solve the mystery. Ew, sorry.

I look forward to reading about the visit to the scene of the crime. I went back to my crash site a couple weeks ago, on about as cold a day as it was when it happened. I did a couple U'eys to try to get my head around where I was, what happened, where the bastard animal came from. I pulled over at the points where I think the bike lay, and where I lay. I looked around for any tell-tale pieces, but there weren't any. It frankly looked a little more sparse - I had imagined the deer had run out from a thick copse of trees, but when I looked at it again, it was just a few little scraggly ones. It was weird. You think about living and how fragile we are, how lucky we can be sometimes, and "why not me" this time, and how nutty this whole 2-wheel thing is, but I personally don't know anyone who has sworn off bikes unless their crash was so spectacular and debilitating that it wasn't physically/mentally feasible. I know more people who have quit riding because they don't have enough free time to themselves.

I left my crash site vowing to be more vigilant, keep my bike in excellent shape, wear my gear all the time (even on the Hog? Damn!), and change my riding habits during certain seasons. And install some additional headlamps.

I think it order for it to be considered "crap" it would have to erupt from the anus.

If it comes from the stomach and colons, I think it's considered "contents" or "bolus".
