You know those things that fourwheelers and snowmobilers use? I can't find them for sale anywhere in Massachusetts. Someone told me that they were banned in this state. Is that true? Those look like the perfect thing to complement my heated grips and wind deflectors. Anyone using them? |

I had a pair of hippo hands and was not happy with the quality or performance. Hippo hands are cheaply made, the quality isn't there for the price. The edges of the velcro aren't finished and they unravel quickly. In order to prevent this you have to use heat to seal the edges. I used them on my Sportster and there was no increase in warmth. None. With heated grips on the Uly there may be some improvement. For as much as I spent on other products and still not having warm hands and fingers I could have had heated gloves and money left over. I finally bit the proverbial bullet and bought heated gloves and jacket liner and now I'm warm. If you really want warmth then heated gloves/gear is the only way to go. YMMV |

I ordered a pair... will report back on how they work. (My Uly has heated grips and I've been commuting through high 20's and low 30 F mornings lately.) |

Nate, Adding handlebar mittens is a huge improvement over heated grips alone. I use a JC Whitney cheapo pair that I've had for more years than I can recall. I work in Cambridge and at least two other riders here have them. All-weather BMW guy uses an old heavy duty fleece-lined leather-look vinyl Hippo Hands and stylish Aprilia guy has fancy red ones with checkered flag accents. I use mine when the temps are low 40's or below. - Bob |

"Hey Adamd, do tell, maybe even a pic." they're the same as the rocky mountain one...actually a lil longer but it's hard to tell. |

i have a set of hippo hands,no problems with quality althou they don't seal the greatest around the bars so i shove a rag in the void. i also have a set of HD heated gloves which i feel are too bulky and restrict quick hand movements (not a good thing). i'm able to remove my hands without any restrictions. i can ride in the 30's with my Icon barrier gloves with grips (cheap aftermarket) on low |

Bobbuell-- What I experienced is exactly the way I stated it. Quality was unacceptably low for the price. YMMV though and perhaps he improved the product since I bought mine 4 years ago. I too had problems with fit and seal which along with poor quality material to go along with no noticeable improvement in warmth made me unhappy with them. I currently own a pair of Gerbing heated gloves original style and don't find them to be too bulky, no more so than any other winter glove. Spending $$ on products that didn't work was expensive and frustrating so I bought the Gerbings and now I have warm hands. Your experience or others experience may be different from mine. IMO heated gear is the only way to go. |

Thanks everyone! I will poke around for the JC Whitney ones I guess. I wonder if I could get away with hacking a pair of overboots or something from a surplus place.... |

I recently bought the Harley heated gloves (made by gerbing). What I did was bought the womens ones instead. They are thinner, more flexible and seem to fit my girly hands better. What sucks about them is when not plugged in they are colder than my summer gloves! |

Froggy, I first bought their "premium" gloves and they're wonderfully supple and feel great but my thumbs got cold so Gerbing removed some of the wiring to increase the heat. After much frustration and disappointment I exchanged them for their classic style which are more insulated but not as supple. These work fine and I haven't found them to be overly bulky. Now that I have a Uly the other gloves may be fine but I'll use what I have and keep the difference in $$. |

Those aren't "real" HippoHands. I had a set of them back in 1978 and they were high quality items. They had a stiff frame to them and were covered with high quality vinyl and lined with fleece. As I recall they were made by Vetter. |

Those aren't "real" Hippo Hands. What I pictured and saw pictures of from other owners prior to buying them vs what I bought weren't the same either. When the current seller/maker of them began making them he must have changed the materials and cheapened them because mine were thin and not well made at all. I couldn't make them seal either and they let in lots of cold air. Not to beat a dead horse to death again but Hippo Hands are IMO not worth the $. |

"Polar Hands" brand muffs are available at most bike shops here in the NW, usually about $35 to $50. Not as good as the "Hippo Hands" from the 70's, but I've used them for several years & they work pretty well. In conjunction with heated grips, they allow me to wear non-lined deerskin gloves down to 40 degrees. They fit my GeezerGlide well, and the Uly if handquards are removed. |

If anyone is interested, the Tucano Urbano muffs that are fitted to my Uly as pictured above, have a rigid frame and fit with the Uly hand guards in place. |

I had an email from jkelly I think, but I accidentally deleted it. If you have sent me an email about these muffs, please resend. Sorry! Tginnh, The Tucano Muffs do a great job of keeping the rain out. They cost approximately $58 US |

Well, my $15 Tusk muffs came in from RMATV. I used them to ride to work today. The temp was 27 F when I left in the morning. The overall quality is actually better than I expected for the $$. The problem is that they are just a little too small for the Uly with aftermarket hand guards. They would probably work good on the stock deflectors. The opening has metal strips sewn into the material that allow you to "set" the size and shape. They are lined with some short fleece. The real problem is that the opening is not wide enough (with big handguards) to allow easy thumb access to the turn signal and grip heat controls. I must say that I will be leaving them on for the winter. My thumb usually gets cold as it hangs down away from the heated grips. Not today. I never had to raise the heaters above low. (Normally below 32 I run on high all the way to work.) All in all I rate these around 7 on a 1-10 scale. They look well made and should do a good job of keeping the hands dry, but I am going to apply some waterproofing just to make sure. |

Hey Corey - thanks for the update on the Tusk muffs. I know this is a lot to ask, but is there any way you could try them out on set of stock handguards? I use my turn signals religiously (especially in foul weather) and the lack of room you noted concerns me. Also, how easy/quickly can they be installed or removed? If they are quick to install, I'm thinking they would be a great addition to my rain gear regardless of the season. Thanks...TG |

I have a buddy with a city-x that has the Uly guards on it. I will ask him if he will try them and take some pics... I bought two pairs and put the second on my four wheeler. They fit that great. I really think the problem is my big hoop handguards (MSR I think). I can still use the turn signal, its just not as easy. Install/removal is a breeze. They have one strap that cinches around the bars. Literally installs in seconds. |
