Hi, I have been keeping my oil level at the half point of the cross hatching on the dip stick. I've found that following the manual the level will only be at the bottom of the cross hatch but the big advantage is I don't get a lot of oil in the air box. If I run it at the 1/2 point I do. How much oil are you putting in with an oil and filter change? Thanks |

I put in 2.5qts which goes to bottom of Xs on dipstick. I figure as long as the oil is at that level, I'm good to go. LMK if I'm wrong. BTW, good to re-route the crankcase breather tubes out of the air box so no oil can go in the air box. |

I've been keeping mine half way up the XXX's. Only takes a little bit from bottom of xxx's to middle though so it probably doesn't make that much of a diff. I filled it up once and that was a mistake. (Message edited by bertotti on November 26, 2008) |

I put in 2.5 quarts and it comes to the bottom part of the X's. I just keep it between there and the bottom of the stick. |

This was the kind of feedback I was hoping for. I'm just going to put in 2 1/2 quarts from now on. Armymedic I had been thinking about rerouting the hoses with a catch can and filter but it seems from the posts and pictures here that you just get a lot of oil all over bottom of the motor/transmission. Less oil seems to be the answer. Thanks Guys! |

Only if you never empty the thing. I dump mine when I wash it. |

I'm glad someone else brought this up. Mine seems to like three quarts. I put in the 2.5Q and after I run it for a few minutes, it looks like it wants another 1/2 quart. It's not burning it or anything. It seems like it just settles out a bubble or something. Perhaps my swingarm is bigger than it's supposed to be? |

Run it more than a few minutes, the stick is only accurate when the engine is hot. |

I have yet to experience any oil anywhere from re-routing the hoses. I have a plug screwed into the bottom of the drain hose under the bike so oil isn't going anywhere. This mod is supposed to help increase HP too from what I've heard as you aren't rerouting non-combustible gases back in your bike. I don't know cuz I modded the airbox at the same time I did the hoses. Does seem to run better with no low end stumble now. |

Hi Armymedic, Can you provided some more details and maybe some pics? Do you have a catch can or did you just do it with hoses and filter? Thanks |

I'll try to post some pics but a basic search for the air box mod and crankcase breather tube re-route should give plenty of info. I basically used a T under the airbox for both tubes, ran that tube out by the rear shock mount, added another T there. From that, ran a breather tube out by the rear shock fluid reservoir with a cool crankcase breather filter at the end (Checker Auto). The other tube runs down thru the bike to just in front of the muffler outlet. I plugged the end to drain, others say let it drain on it's own in front of the exhaust. I opened the airbox so it looks like an 07 but plan on doing full open airbox with K&N filter this winter as per these instructions: http://jl.sg/articles/2007/08/04/06-open-air-box-a nd-breather-mod |

Thanks for the description and the link is also good to get my head around this. If you do get a chance to take some pics that would be great. I like idea about keeping the hose plugged for manual draining. Thanks! |

When I change the oil & add 2.5 quarts, the dipstick is bone dry (yes, I do check it hot). |

""When I change the oil & add 2.5 quarts, the dipstick is bone dry (yes, I do check it hot)."" Sounds like you just need a longer dipstick! . |

Hah! My father is a mechanic, once he had someone coming to his shop that couldn't figure out why their car was running like ass and spewing smoke. Turned out the guy saw he was low on oil, and then "I added these 2 big quarts". He was holding gallon jugs. |
