I need to post a photo of my parking space at work...oil spots everywhere. But...new top end gasket kit arrived last night and I'm gonna tear it apart again Sunday (gotta get my 4th son's '98 Yamaha RT100 ready to sell on Saturday). I'll take my time and hopefully finish everything up over Thanksgiving. This time new base gasket, valve seals (stockers), even more care with O-rings, etc...if there's an oil leak when I'm done I'm, I'm...well, I'm gonna be upset. I've had some oil contamination behind the rear cylinder; I'll clear out that area and see what's up there as well. I know others have had that issue. At least the engine is a lot cleaner this time, and I know the drill. I'll post lots of photos during the process. Wish me luck. P.S. Spark plugs have stayed in so far. Whew. | ||

I think you should get a TIG welder and seal-weld all the joints just to be sure...  Seriously, I know how unbelievably aggravating it is to do a job like this as carefully as possible and STILL have a problem. Good luck with it- I'm sure you'll get it right this time. | ||

P.S. Spark plugs have stayed in so far. Whew. Your TimeSert mod is trick. Lots of stock heads have stripped at the plug for various reasons. You're probably set for life in that department. Good luck and take nice pix. My turn is coming up soon. | ||

I have been told that there is like 30,000 Heli-Coils used on the space shuttle. They use them on initial constructionuse so as to not ruin or wear out the threads in all those cool hi-tech space-age polymers and metals. I had often thought about doing it to all of my aluminum heads but to date have been lazy and apprehensive as I've yet to have any trouble with them. Hmmmm. | ||

Well, if you insist...here are a few "BEFORE" pics.     It's especially, um, noticeable when stopped at a traffic light (and the wind is calm)...clouds of oil smoke flooding up around me. Hopefully fixed by the end of Thanksgiving break. | ||

Well, since I had to re-do a fair bit the first time (Uly assembly sequence is rather important) I'll designate this as the 3rd time and be optimistic. P.S. Pale ale already open...cleaning the carb on my 4th son's dirt bike prior to selling. I hate cleaning carbs! In fact, one reason I don't mind doing as much dirt riding as we used to (as a family) is the seemingly endless wrenching on dirt bikes. | ||

Are you sure you put gaskets back in that thing  Just had my rocker box gaskets replaced under warranty on my 08' (9000 miles) and I was worried about riding around with half the amount of leakage you have.... Well more like 1/32 that amount of oil. | ||

Just got the carb back in this bad boy...1998 Yamaha RT100; great kids' trail bike. Get the bodywork back on and that clears the deck for the Uly tomorrow.  BTW, got plenty cases of IPA. Unfortunately I also have an 8:00 a.m. class Monday morning, so better not get carried away! I'll post a few pics tomorrow of how things are going. Nice to have such "encouraging" mates here... | ||

Glad to see the oil on the floor because that garage is just too damn clean!!  Like the IPA too. I'm enjoying a homebrewed version myself. Nothing like the hops kicking you in the back of the head to keep you focused!  | ||

Yeah, I used to be a homebrewer, too . Rewarding hobby (in several ways  ) but I guess over the last few years it was one hobby too many; haven't brewed much recently. Actually the REAL reason was that I've been ridin' the Uly so much  that no time left for brewin'. Now that's SACRIFICE! | ||

Given that choice, machine design. Actually my area is "dynamic systems & controls," and my research area is robotics. I teach dynamics, control systems, mechanisms; stuff like that. Also microprocessors, LEGO robots, mechatronics. In grad school (in the late 60s-early 70s) I was in the "design" division of ME as opposed to the "thermal sciences" division, so that probably answers your question. BTW, my original dissertation topic was going to be motorcycle stability analysis under a legendary dynamics prof (Thomas R. Kane), but a few things delayed me (near-fatal bicycle crash, etc.) and when I came back to school there was research support in this new-fangled area called "robotics." It wasn't called robotics then (1972), but...the rest is history. | ||

Why is there so much oil on the front? That's a LOT of oil Dr_greg! How far does your oil level decrease on the stick after a ride like that? Just what I see on the ground would bring my oil level up from low to just right I'd guess. Who're Debbie and Mona and Sheila and Tammy?  | ||

OK, guys, this is the final picture tonight. Gonna eat Mrs. Greg's dinner (shrimp, french fries; eat your heart out).  Yeah, lots of oil. I'll figure out where it's coming from. Y'know, oil leakage is like (sorry) blood from a head wound. Any head wound bleeds like CRAZY and looks terrible, even though it may be minor. After 150 miles of interstate, the oil level was a little low, but not much. Gonna watch part of the Texas Tech-Oklahoma game (my dad's from Oklahoma, but TT's closer to us here, so I dunno). I'm a CA guy meself (go USC!). Oh yeah, about Debbie...dang my garage is full of interesting things I guess...well, you see I've got four boys (Paul, Keith, Mark, Jeff). I joke with Mrs. Greg that if I had four girls I'd have named them "Debbie, Mona, Sheila, Tammy"...no, I'm not a sexist. Not very, anyway. Somethin' tells me Mrs. Greg would have had some input on those names... Goodnight, guys. See ya in the morning. | ||

Sorry about the slow progress, folks. Just about ready to rotate the engine down, but gonna for a walk with Mrs. Greg and the dog first. Back in a while. P.S. Clutch cable wireform broken. Musta stressed it somewhat when I reattached it a couple weeks ago. Oh, well...common failure. Is there a newer part for that thing? I should do a search but haven't. Clutch cable boot suffered a little damage, but not bad. | ||

That's quick work. It's just unfortunate the reasons why! The cable holder has been updated and it's roughly ten bucks. I've read that those that replaced their cable said it really improved the clutch effort. I can't confirm that one but may soon. Enjoy your walk.  Take your time  Relax, have a home brew!! Dr_greg- Here's a pic of the new cable holder:  Original is : N0012.1AA Revised unit: N0012.1AAA $12.99 from your dealer. Some people have used standard old rubber-lined tubing clamps from the auto parts store until they can get the right part. | ||
