Looks like it performed quite well against the BMW and HD entries. That's good to see - and it was in September, and they don't mention the engine heat. That's another good sign. |

Good report, but hard to believe it topped out at 105 MPH. That BA rear case must really have a lot of drag! |

""Good report, but hard to believe it topped out at 105 MPH. That BA rear case must really have a lot of drag!"" Hugh, I thought the same thing - maybe it was representative of the track that was used, rather than its actual top speed. 5.15 sec. 0-60 sound pretty good, though. John . |

I thought the uly's top speed was around 125mph. Ive had my xt to 95mph ish, and it was turning around 5k rpms i think. This was Without the bags, and with top case. So im sure 125mph is possible. Not that I would ever go to that speed, but its just good to know you can do 125. |

I've seen 130mph indicated on my Ulysses, which I'm sure was a bit optimistic. Why were the lap times for the motorcycles so much higher? The Ulysses should have mopped up at the track. |

Cars are always faster on the track. Compare F1 or any similar high performance automobile class to MotoGP or Superbike and the cars are always faster. A- |

But compare your average car to your average sport bike, and things are a bit different. Or compare your average police car to your not so average Buell police bike ! |

Chad, short answer is physics. Cars can turn at higher speeds because they got 4 wheels and more grip. Over simplifying it, but thats it. I saw this video of a Duc 1098 and a Lambo, they were neck and neck, with the Duc just owning the straight, but the Lambo caught up fast in the turns. |

Got to take the locals out for a bit of lead and follow this week on my bike, while they demo'd the ULY.... Got to show them how the BAS resets I have a feeling that I could get a 'ride' along for one of their kegger buster patrols. |

I understand that a high performance sports car is as fast as or faster than a sportbike on a track, but come on! a police package tahoe had almost 4 minute faster lap time than a Uly! had to be a different track or more laps |

That's *physics* for ya. Trust me, my physical therapists, and my titanium legs. Physics wins, every time. I'm perfectly happy with a strong second place And the MSP tests have been the benchmark test for years. Same track, same tests, true objectivity. |

It looks like the Cars were tested at the proving grounds and the bikes at Gratten raceway. No way a car makes it around THAT track in less than 2 minutes. It is a great track for motorcycles. Top speed can be trapped in a couple of different places but the changes in elevation and the turns there would really be in the Uly's zone paulync formally of western MI |

I do not understand the results on the Uly XP. My Uly pulls strong through top of fourth and keeps pulling in fifth. Top of fourth is just under 120mph. The Siren sticking out the side I know is a drag, but I would have thought it would still top out fourth gear. On the track the Uly behaved as expected though. It left all other motorcycles in that test with its superior handing. |

maybe the bike testers are the usual harly guys. you know, afraid to drag crome and lean the bike over. I want to see a video of the lap. it just doesn't look right that the suv can beat the bikes.......maybe he cut some of the corners off. |

Something's wrong with those results -- Carlos is correct IMHO. My Uly will show 130 with me on it and I'm catching more air than any siren you can hang on a bike. |

Well I've ridden and driven on a track and yes, a true sports car against a crotch rocket will win if there are enough turns but I'm sorry, police cars do not handle like sports cars. Just the weight alone makes them slower. Hell I out ran a LTD copper with a BMW 2002 on a race track! The 2002 was a great car for it's day but any decent bike could take it. Those times were so far apart that they had to be different tracks or different number of laps. The 106 top speed makes no sense either. Hell my Road Glide will do 120+! My Uly does more! |

Both the 105 and 130 questionable figures for the Ulysses. In XP form, I'm running the same configuration less the siren, I've had no problem cruising the New Jersey Turnpike around 110 MPH. The 105, and it would depend on what they call "topped out", is not top speed. Ditto the 130MPH. I can't say definitively if a Ulysses would do 130 MPH but I'll bet you it exhibits interesting characteristics at that speed. It'd sure be pushing it. I went through the catalog and bought, with a little sticker shock that comes from buying parts made in hundreds, not thousands, a bunch of the XB12XP parts. I have the switch sitting here on the desk trying to decide what to use it for. It's a robust looking thing that begs to be incorporated. The switch was like $50 some bucks and the mounting stuff another $25. |

I'll take a mazda miata and you take a Uly and we'll see if you can stay with me on Deals Gap.... Like I stated; a sports car against a motorcycle will win if there is enough corners and Deals gap has a lot so you might take me but not by any four minutes!! That's what we're talking about, in the police car and bike contest they were saying the cars were lapping at a minute and forty seconds and the bikes were 5 to 6 minutes. I'm just saying there had to be a difference in tracks, the bikes could not be that slow. The old St. Louis international raceway was a 2.2 mile 12 turn track. My 2002 would run 1:57 lap times. I ran the track with a BMW K1 and it didn't take five minutes! Hence my confusion... |

Court - how much are the lights that go on the handguards? I want to add some lights there for conspicuity, and if I can get some that are purpose built for the Uly at a reasonable price, I'd rather do that. |

>>>>how much are the lights that go on the handguards? No idea but your dealer could tell you. I'll order a set next week when I get back and we'll find out. I like the lights on the handguards and the Outdoorsman luggage begs for more lighting. Use caution to use nothing but white lights (you can order blure/red from Buell) to avoid "Imperial Entanglements". |

I think yellow or orange would be ok too, wouldn't it? I was looking at these if the Buell lights aren't a cost-effective alternative: http://www.photonblaster.com/ |

Or you could go to Wally Mart and get reflective stickers for 3 bucks. When oncoming cars lights hit these, they shine back like lights, even more so when they flash me. NO LEO problems with them at all in Wa State. (your jurisdictions may vary)

Looking on H-Dnet, the handguards have the brackets for the lights made into them according to the description, priced $65/each. "Horizontal LED" lights, either red or blue (I'd assume the manufacturer, whoever it is - I'd guess whelen or federal signal - also makes clear & amber) are priced at $105/each. |

I'm too inept to highlight the quote I want to reply to, so here it is (my answer is below it): That's what we're talking about, in the police car and bike contest they were saying the cars were lapping at a minute and forty seconds and the bikes were 5 to 6 minutes. I think I found the answer: " Vehicle braking and acceleration and all motorcycle aspects of the tests were held at the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea with the remaining vehicle's dynamics gauntlet taking place at the Grattan Raceway in Grattan." So, ALL of the bike testing was done at the Chrysler Proving Grounds, but the car lap times were recorded at Grattan. |

Thanks Packdog, I didn't catch that, it all makes sense now. It's too bad that they didn't use the same track as it would have been interesting to see the differences in lap times between the two on the same playing field. |
